Nakaya Ishi-Me Kan-Shitsu (Stone Finish)

Anyone have any thoughts on the Stone Finishes offered by Nakaya?

What would you like to know about it? I have a Midori Dorsal Fin with a music nib that I simply adore. It's one of the finishes that actually affects the handling of the pen. It is quite comfortable to hold, more so than the much slicker urushi finishes.

That's a good start. I have been thinking about a Neo-Standard with the stone finish, but cannot decide on a color.

_{I first encountered the finish on a Dorsal Fin 1 at John Mottishaw's table at an LA Pen Show a few years ago. I loved it at first touch! The Dorsal Fin was a bit expensive for me, but I never forgot the finish. Some time later I was able to pick up a Neo Standard in the Ishime Kanshitsu and I now refer to the finish as "Ishime Kanshits ooooohhh!}

 

_{I am not quite sure how to describe it. It is a tactile experience, not a verbal one. The feel in my hand is just wonderful! I let a friend try it and he said "that feels better than anything I have held in hand except a breast."}

Note that in the pictures I just posted, the pen is a Neo Standard Ishime Kanshitsu in Aka Tamenuri. Hope this helps.

actually describing Urushi is nothing short of easy LOL

well I was able to hold one if you do not like the smooth gloosy feel of any tamenuri finishes then the ishimenuri finish will be your you but that goes without saying the premium you will want to pay for due to the additional process to make the ishimenuri (adding stone/sand?)

"Ishime-Kanshitsu involves sprinkling dried Urushi powder over an underlying base. The grains are then sharpened with charcoal and finished with more layers of Urushi lacquer to achieve a stone-like surface. Ishime-Kanshitsu can be done in most any color..."

Also, does Danitrio have anything like this or is it a Nakaya specialty.

danitrio should also have it ishimenuri is one of the widely practiced finishes for urushi (at least from what I'm getting when I look into Ishimenuri)

eloquentogre, wow I had to look at your handle for a few minutes to make sure I got it right, and despite that, am not sure I did.

 

The main determinant that helps to decide whether a pen would handle well is how the designer shapes the pen, and also the weight and balance of the pen. Yes the material does affect it, but less so. I have the Piccolo, the Portable, and Decapod and the Dorsal 1. They are all very well designed and light, thus ensuring comfort for very long writing sessions. I remember holding the pens and coming to the realization why pens should be light. The Ishime finish might affect the handling, but it does not mean the other Nakayas are any less comfortable. The finish does elicit more response from people around you, than a regular Nakaya!
