Pilot Decimo Nib Choice - (What For Western Medium)

Hello all,

 

After returning a Lamy 2k and an Aurora Ipsilon, I am now planning to buy a Pilot Decimo (prefer to capless) but I am hesitating on the nib : I am searching for an equivalent to a Lamy/Western M or very wet F.

 

First > I was using a Lamy Safari F that was like a medium-broad with a wet ink, Noodler's Bernanke bblk,

 

} I will use Iroshizuku shin-kai which I think have a medium/flow lubrication, I tried tsuki-yo and it was a little less wet than Noodler's, so count that.

(flow> waterman but <noodler's)

 

I had the opportunity to try a Capless near home so I have an idea about the "softness" of the nib and the clip will not bother me even though I am left-handed.

I didn't realize if the nib was a medium or a broad but as I am in Europe and it was a Capless, I think it was more likely to be a medium as the broad is less common. Inked with Pilot Black it was fine (will try to upload a scan later).

 

+ I heard that the Japanese statement that M=F, B=M was not very true with this pens, at least with the vps in the us.. So I guess that if the medium is the one that I have encountered and if it is as an "average" medium, it should be fine.

I am afraid that with the softness the broad will be too large, otherwise I suspect the iroshizukus to not be very far of the namikis inks in term of wetness.

 

So : What nib do you recommend?

since pilot nibs write finer as compared to western nibs you could go for Bold nib

My experience is that VP gold nibs are similar to western ones. So go for M.

What's a western medium?

Lamy medium is different from Pelikan medium. Pelikan gold medium is different from Pelikan steel medium. I believe there is nothing like western medium.

My experience is that VP gold nibs are similar to western ones. So go for M.

In fact I have tried a second time the Capless I found in store (with Pilot Black), and after being looking at the links & a video review by the Pen Habit (who was using Iroshizuku ink) I think that I will go for the M, it did not seems that much different from a Lamy M.

 

The one I tried in store was probably a Medium and I felt good with it, so maybe I will post a photo soon but the choice is almost done,

What's a western medium?

Lamy medium is different from Pelikan medium. Pelikan gold medium is different from Pelikan steel medium. I believe there is nothing like western medium.

 

I know, you are right.

To be clearer I am looking for the closest thing to a Lamy Medium, but for sure it also depends on the ink.

 

Otherwise from the other comments and some researches I think that a Medium would be a wiser choice,

I just have to return my previous pen and I will decide.
