Hakase Real Sepia - Dark

Inks are here. It has ammonia so the smell is quite pungent. I had a slight headache after smelling it.

I *might* place an order for hakase next year since i cannot keep any more inks.

At long last I am posting my CRV comparing the Hakase Real Sepia Dark with various inks in my collection. I've sent the original back to Ms. Amberlea so she can scan it and post it. This is just a poor iPhone 4 photo.

 

Of the inks I used, the Noodler's Old Dutch Colony Sepia is the closest. It's a little redder, but much less so than many other inks, especially ones with "sepia" in the name. Also the Hakase seems somewhat pale compared to all of the modern inks I tried. I'm not sure if that is historically accurate, or if the modern expense makes it economically unfeasible to offer the ink at "full strength". I'm not up on historical production methods for sepia ink, but I think it was really a dip pen ink used long before fountain pens were invented. I'm sure someone will correct me if I've provided incorrect information.

 

This experiment has shown that for me there is no reason to purchase Hakase Real Sepia as there are many fabulous modern inks which appear to be actually much better than the "real deal". There seems to be no reason for animals of the sea to die for their ink any longer.

Just joking... .... I haven't had time for testing my Hakase .. and cross reference it with my other browns... I have old dutch sepia too. I just need time.... (where does it go... I start with 24 hrs every day... )

I know it's terrible about time. Maybe we need 6.4 days in a day like on Pluto. Maybe that would be enough.

I already have both light and dark Hakase sepia ink. The smell is quite strong (ammonia) so I'd recommend not to try smelling it.

Since you have found the substitute for this, time to find substitute for squid and octopus ink.

If I recall correctly:

Squid ink - blue-black

Octopus - black
