There is a pinned topic on FPN for dating MB149 pens but the guide to dating MB146 has, unfortunately, not been pinned. So I understand when you talk about a "lesser flagship"... ;)

out of curiosity which one you like more the sailor or mb?

 

I like the MB more. Apart from the nib the stock sailor FPs (black/gold or silver) are mostly VFMs, however they do miss a touch of elegance. However if you ask about the Pilot C823, i may prefer that to the 146 most of the times.
