What Pen Did You Get Today?

Recommended Posts

I spent some time on January 2nd shopping online and decided I really wanted to get a fountain pen that was slim enough to fit nicely in my planner. I ended up getting a blue Hero 397B from isellpens.com. It was my first purchase from that site. Shipping was very quick, and once I cleaned out the pen, it works great.

I'm pretty sure the nib is considered a fine, but it lays down a nice wet line for its size. It's a great shade of blue and looks very classy for a $10 pen.

I got a Retro 51 Tornado pen in the cognac color. I found it at the local Meininger's Art Supply store. I went in to see what inks they carried. I ended up with the pen and ink.

The Blue Pilot Knight I'd ordered through the Pendemonium holiday sale arrived! (Do not attribute its lateness to the vendor; it was mailed promptly - the elevators here are under construction so the mail service won't walk up to our floor.)

Nice pen! Wicked nib creep with Noodler's Legal Blue, though. It looks like a drop of ink will roll off the nib and on to the paper any minute now.

Today I got two packages from the mail office. One a Pilot Crystal Demonstrator (my first demonstrator to try the waters ...) from Speerbob. The second a very small package containing a quite big pen, a Pelikan M805 from Regina Martini. Just great. :)

Yesterday I received my first non-calligraphy Sheaffer. (Yay! A real Sheaffer.) I received a Sheaffer Imperial. It is chrome and very shiny. Me like!

Yesterday, I got a blue marble Waterman Phileas from a seller on eBay. I, also, got a Rotring Core Technor and a gold and champagne Sensa Meridian from Swisher pens. :clap1:

Ah yes, happily changing gears here after my bout of apoplexy on the "Immigration" thread. Both my new Pencraft Herald, and Yard-O-Led pens arrived today, 3 weeks ahead of schedule! Count me a country-bumpkin pen owner as I was all-so-impressed by my Cross ATX, and then these pens arrive.

Brian Gray's Pencraft Herald, in black ebonite and stock nib, is expertly crafted. That is, flawless. It comes with a converter about 1.5 times the size of the Cross ATX. The steel nib shames the ATX in terms of smoothness, and lays down a nice wet line. There is no skipping, and no ink-flow problems which took me a few days to iron out with the then brand new ATX. The pen is big, but essentially weightless. A superb pen!

The Yard-O-Led Grand in Barley finish was ordered with a "Fine" nib. It is very heavy, which is one of the reasons I went for it. Everybody knows about the fit and finish already, but I must mention, this pen is awe-inspiring. The nib is not as wet as the Pencraft, but it is a glider; I can't imagine a smoother nib.

A Cross Solo from Pen Hero, got here quite quickly. Pen writes really well as expected and the nib unit looked quite nice swapped out into a Parker Big red BP (pity the Parker unit doesn't fit into the Solo but you can't have everything I suppose.

Actually, it was on Sunday on a return road trip. Stopped in an antique mall in an out-of-the-way place in North Carolina. (No, I will not tell you where.) Picked up very reasonably two pens, which I then looked up in the Pens of the World....

1) Sheaffer Triumph/Crest (Vac-Fil). Beautiful striated brown body, gold-filled cap. Body and nib in perfect shape, but the vac-fil will need professional restoration.

2) Sheaffer Admiral (Touchdown). Solid blue body. Might attempt to repair this myself using Da Book.

I got one of these (Pilot FP-50R) and the demonstrator version at Kinokuniya as well as a Red Pilot Petit. The Petit is a killer writer. The ink is a wild color for me though. The FP-50Rs are XF and I've never written with an Asian XF before. They are XXF. They aren't super smooth, but the nibs are like the ones on my Pilot Knight, so they write really well. They were also super cheap ($8.95)

My first Conway Stewart: a Dandy in Azure.

It's a nice size of pen for me to carry around since I prefer a small purse.

Today, I received the FP and pencil set of Waterman 94's, and the set of Thuya burl pens I had turned for me. My Parker Sonnet should come tomorrow. Not sure when my Esterbrook dollar pen is supposed to get here.

Yes!!! :clap1: My FedEx package finally arrived. In it was my blue True Writer fountain pen from Levenger and a box of raven black refill cartridges. This pen just might displace my Waterman as my every day carry pen.

Today, I got a Parker Frontier writing set that was supposed to come with a black/red pen but instead came with a black/green pen. That's a big deal to me, and I'm trying to sort that out with the person I bought from. I have a black/green but do not have one in black/red. So far, the seller has insisted that he posted a photo of the exact item he sent me even though he has reused the photo in two other auctions. I have a feeling I'm going to come away from this dissatisfied, will leave negative feedback for the first time, and will suffer retaliatory feedback (which, as a buyer, doesn't upset me so much). If so, I may use the marketplace for the first time.

I hope it goes a lot better than that and my more detailed and firmer email gets a positive response.

ETA: I think I have come to an agreement with the seller. We'll see.

Today i received a very nice MB 149 from about 1988 with a 14kt medium nib.

I am not usually a Mont Blanc fan boy but I saw this one and, after getting the right answers to a few questions, took the plunge on a pen that I have been wanting to try against the Sailor KOP nad Danitrino Mikado.

Without turning this into a mini review I have to say that I find the nib very very good. Whether it tops the nibs on what I consider to be my two favourite moderns remains to be seen. Its in the runnng though.

I won 6 pens in an estate sale auction for $40. I don't consider it a bad haul for my first live auction.

1. A first year Parker "51" Demi (the fat kind) in black.

2. A "vest pocket" Conklin Endura in jade green with the cap ring missing and stunning color in the body (with an earlier model cap of lighter green, also in great color). This one has a great flexible stub nib!

3. A Sheaffer of unknown model; it has something of a steel Triumph nib, but is a c/c filler; looks like the TD-filling transition model between the Snorkel and the PFM.

4. A black Eversharp lever filler with a chrome cap, possibly from the 1950's. Don't know much about these pens, but this one writes great.

5. A Parker Jotter ballpoint/marker set, possibly from the 1970's.

6. A dip pen with a couple of extra nibs.

From the marketplace here, a vintage waterman 52 in BCHR from Skip, which will help in my "colors of ebonite" quest (I have a matching 52 in red ripple and a 52V in blue ripple).

From the marketplace here, a cute little black-and-creme noname pen from Pip, which I put in my Levenger pen holder -- and it promptly disappeared! I'm going to have to use the ringtop to get it back out. :o

A Cleo Skribent Ebonite in blue, gorgeous! I got it from Passion4pens. First time I dealt with them, but wow. I ordered my pen on Christmas eve, and got a confirmation on Christmas Day that they'd order it from Germany. I received it today, 16 days later. Presentation in an octagonal inner box is quite stunning for the price.

Also picked up a cute little Cleo Skribent Messograf, which has calipers on the pen face, also from passion4pens.

From Bittner's sale, I found out they had a Nettuno Nautilus, which I picked up at an absolutely incredible price. It's an amazing looking pen, and it seems very comfy. The presentation box appears to be real leather, and it's quite lovely. Bang for buck, I think this is my most amazing deal yet.
