I got two pens today, actually. Well, I ordered two pens, I should say, since they're not actually here yet. I got an aquamarine Lamy Safari (M nib, plus two spare nibs, 1.1 and 1.5 italic) and a TWSBI (after wanting/debating for a good while). So excited!

Pilot 78G - Broad/Stub Nib for $9.99!

After a few minor adjustments to the feed and the nib, this is an impressive wet stub.

Ink: Noodler's Black

I lost - for the first time in 36 years of pen collecting -- a pen recently, my very favorite RB, a Parker Sonnet cisele in sterling silver. It was part of a matched set (I have the FP) and I LOVED the RB (don't like the nib on FP, but that's another story). I'd had the set for years -- maybe 20? I was so bummed!

So I ordered a new sterling Sonnet cisele RB.

It came today. It has a ugly wide GF band on the lip of the cap that looks tacky to me - the old ones have a thin, discreet gold band and the sterling silver hallmarks on the lip of the cap. And it feels lighter than my old one and lighter than the old FP (maybe the silver is thinner?)

I tried removing the section and swapping it into the older FP body, but the cap won't close, so I can't simply switch out the RB section into the old FP body.

Ugh. I'm still bummed. :-(

a sailor ebony wood. i don't have it with me, yet. yes, i've paid for it, but it came with a F nib and i requested for an exchange with a MF nib instead. they'll have it ordered and it'll arrive later this month. so in the meantime, i'm happy with the 2 free bottles of sailor black ink given by the store manager. she's a friend :)

Actually the pen arrived two days ago, but the ink for it was brought today by the mailman. It's a Cross Century II Red filled now with Diamine Oxblood.

A man walks into a pen shop...

Tuesday, on my way from an errand, I realized I was within walking distance of Fountain Pen Hospital (I know...for some of us, a mile would be considered "within walking distance"), and I decided to stop in, especially to get a gander at the all-matte-black Pilot VP, even though my mind was still mostly set on a Fermo (if anything). I arrive, spot the pen in the display case, and ask to see it. Love At First Touch: besides the look, which hooked me on the pen anew, the tactile grip of the thing floored me. Since I wasn't quite set to plunk down change for one, I asked about putting a deposit on one they had in stock:

Salesguy: Won't be able to do that...we're out stock, and still waiting for a shipment.

Me: How long might that be? (Remembering the Lamy Dialog 3 fiasco: by the time that arrived, I didn't want it.)

Salesguy: July, maybe August. (Surprise: next to no one else has 'em, either.)

Me (Twilrling display model in my hand): How about this one?

Salesguy: Can't take a deposit on this one, and I'd have to ask the boss whether he'll sell it at all.

Me: ...

Salesguy: He's not in today, but if you call tomorrow I can ask him.

Me: I might do that.

Salesguy: Also, there's a tiny blemish on the barrel. (Shows pinpoint of exposed brass). We'll give a discount for that.

Fast-forward to yesterday (Wed.) afternoon. Not sure about pulling the trigger on this, since I'm flying to Seattle for a week on Friday, but then I think: there's a pen to take on the plane with me. But, such a sudden, impulse purchase...

I call up.

Salesguy: Hi! Interested in the pen?

Me: Well...what's your boss say about selling it?

Salesguy: Hang on a minute, I'll ask him. (Cut to music-on-hold, interspersed with witty banter from The Cos...still hope to rap with the guy one of these days.)

Salesguy: Sorry to keep you waiting, he's downstairs. Should be just another minute or so.

Me: (Wondering what I'm getting myself into...again.)

Salesguy: He says yes, and will do a deal.

Me: Well...(serves me right.)

Awaiting my arrival was a standard black presentation Eversharp Skyline with missing derby, broken lever, dried sac, and a name engraved into the cap, a standard green presentation Eversharp Skyline with missing nib, dry sac, and loose gold filled cap, and last a brown streamline demi Eversharp Skyline with a loose derby, no section, no sac, and ribbed plastic cap!

Time to get to the repairs.

Not a whole pen; a Pilot VP Cursive Italic nib unit from Richard Binder. Happy happy happy!!!

I tried to tell myself I didn't need a whole new pen since the nib units interchange so easily. I have a feeling I will end up with another pen body before long, though.

Technically it arrived yesterday but...

an Omas 80th Anniversary LE Paragon, in Blue Senape (formerly called Blue Saffron), with a web medium nib, #19 of 80.

It's my second blue saffron -- that first one sports a fine nib and is heavily blue, with modest amounts of saffron swirls. This new one is the opposite -- mostly saffron swirls, some white flecks.

You either love this color, or you hate it. In strong light, it's so beautiful to see the flecks of gold in the saffron swirls, it takes my breath away.

  • 2 months later...

Gold-filled Conway Stewart with hard-rubber section.

Damage to the barrel-end. The end-cap broke off into the inside of the pen. A bit of pushing and pressure with tweezers has wedged it firmly back into where it should be. Sac also needs replacing. Doing that now. Clip is wobbly...not sure what I can do about that...otherwise, it's in good, working order, with no other damage (okay, it's a teensy bit brassed).

Engraved on the barrel:
