What Pen Did You Get Today?

George

Recommended Posts

Picked up my Tortoise Poseidon today from the post office at 5:25 pm. The p.o. closes at 5:30. I have jury duty. The pen would have arrived yesterday, but I was not home to sign for it. The Poseidon is now inked with Caran D'Ache Grand Canyon. Its fine nib lays down a very nice fine line, finer than the gold fine nib on my BX701, which tends towards a blobby medium. Are they different varieties of Bock nibs or did I just get lucky this time? I need to ink up my Tortoise Sheherazade, f nib, to keep the Poseidon company. Maybe Waterman Havana in that one. :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01: :bunny01:

Sailor Trident 767 (fat body, can hold a Sailor converter) in stainless steel, NOS from Russ Stuttler in Japan via eBay. Slim, light, three-tine nib designed to allow use with multi-part forms. Light, rides nicely in the hand. Good line, consistent flow.

I got a Waterman 13 in the mail today, black hard rubber, chased, medium nib, needs a little bit of nib tweaking but actually writes pretty nicely as it. My third eyedropper. Nice eBay experience and a very nice seller.

Diane got two Watermans today, her daughter just found Diane’s grandfather’s pen, a model 52V blue ripple with a really nice fine flex nib, I have it up and running now with some Noodler’s Blue. She has been grumping about this pen for 3 years since her mother died, thinking her mother had tossed it out. Debbie found it in the sewing machine drawer. The hard rubber has faded a bit, but there is no brassing to the clip/lever/cap ring, first one I have seen with none at all. Which is odd considering that her grandfather and mother both used this pen quite a lot over the years. After using it for a few minutes I can see why, if this pen was a regular 52 Diane would have to worry about my trying to steal it from her. A very nice, SMOOTH writer that looks well loved. No scratches that I can see, the impressions are pretty well worn from use. Doesn’t matter, Diane has her grandfathers pen and can finally stop grumping about her mother losing or tossing it.

With it was another Waterman, a brown Throughbred, the cap have a few scratches but is in much better color than most I have seen. It is going to need a new sac, I am going to have to order some more, just ran out of that size. Dipping the nib shows that even though it is far from my favorite style of Waterman pen it is going to be a nice writer, another fine nib, no flex, but very smooth. It was her dad’s other pen, so she has all three of the important pens from her parents now. (It is pretty bad when I lust after two of them, the Ripple and the over-sized gray-striped Sheaffer lever-filler. Good thing I just ordered a Pelikan M800 old style black, now if I can just hang on until it comes in.)

A green Esterbrook Model J, excellent condition. Even the bladder is intact. It has a 1550 nib. I've never used a 1550 before. Should be interesting.

Received a copper colored Estie with 1550 nib, described on eBay as pink. The nib appears to be a right oblique grind on a 1550 (examined under a magnifying glass). This makes the 5th Estie I received off the Bay which needs a sac. Also received a Sheaffer desk set last week with the sac removed. Still in transit are a green Estie, which "appears to be in good cosmetic condition, did not test it with ink" sounds like a new sac on this one too. Also in transit an Estie desk set "in good condition". Maybe another sac there. And finally, a Pelikan Level 1/65, no sac to replace.

SWMBO has placed a moratorium on purchases for the time being, so I may have to offer trades on Marketplace

I took some pictures of Diane’s Ripple, they didn’t come out too well, but maybe well enough to see what she got. I did a light clean up, polish and wax on it and it looks much better now, but I can’t get it out of Diane’s hands long enough to take more pictures. Maybe later.

My daughter and I are packing up to leave Marseille soon, so I thought I'd pick up two fun, inexpensive pens that you can't seem to get easily in the States:

1) a Lamy "Smile" (very different from the Safari I expected to get), and

2) a purple Waterman Kultur.

The Kultur is for me (casual days, weird inks -- wait, do I need an excuse?)...the Lamy my daughter picked out to replace a cheaper FP that skipped and was frustrating her. I had never heard of the Smile before. It's a fun pen, for kids small to extra large, good quality without going cheapie.

Received a pen I've been eyeing and debating buying for a while: a Stipula Vedo, red, fine nib. I filled it with my favorite red ink (Omas red) and it writes beautifully (plus I like looking at the ink in its ample window). I've read some not-so-good reviews of Stipula pens, but so far, my luck has been extremely good with this brand (my husband's 2 Stipulas worked great out of the box, same with a graduation Stipula pen gift, and this Vedo is a winner, too).

Not a new pen, but a Golden Pearl Vac I bought a few weeks back on ebay that needed some TLC, after seeking members recommendations for a UK repairer, eventually went off to Laurence Oldfield at Penpractice.

Anyway Laurence has got the pen working and now filled with Waterman Florida Blue and writing well, with nice fine line and in my work rotation for the week. Whilst I now have 3 vacs tended to stay clear as I prefer pens that I can tell if they are likely to work or not, but will now be tempted with more vacs, because at least I now know they can be restored to working order without having to ship to the USA.

I just got a Sailor Sapporo in the mail and it is wonderful. Such a smooth writer!

None of us can have as many virtues as the fountain-pen, or half its cussedness; but we can try.

Got a Pelikan Level 1/65 (depending upon where it is sold). Cannot ink it though -- left my Level inkpot at work, where it has been a decoration, with a feather quill (not cut for writing) sticking out. I am off tomorrow, so I'll have my son (who works at the same place) pick it up for me and bring it home, so I can ink the beast. Looks nice, nib is similar to Grand Prix, but won't be able to tell how similar until I can ink it (the Level).
