What Pen Did You Get Today?

Today I got two Lamy Safaris. One in glossy black with a fine nib and a white one with an extra fine nib that I swapped from another Lamy. Enjoying both pens very much, but the white is my favorite.

Bexley Simplicity F in Tortoise.

Lamy 2000 EF

Hero 100

The Hero and Lamy are real winners. I need to ink the Bexley soon, but I am having way too much fun with the other two pens and a new bottle of Baystate Blue!

This week, I discovered this great network, reading lots of inspiring reviews. A strong desire arose. I had to buy a more expensive fountain pen than the ones I had laying around.

The Pelikan M215 was praised all over this forum, and it looked very nice on pictures, so I went out to buy it. I'm from Holland, and here the M215 costs around 90 euro, so about 130 dollar. I tried it in the store, and immediately got disappointed. It was pretty, sure, but very light and short, and it felt a bit too plastic-like. And above all: it almost tore the paper to pieces, while making loud noises. All three of the M215's I tried (all of them with F nibs) gave about the same experience.

Now what?

I liked the look of the new Waterman Expert, it's weight, it's classy sigar form. And it appeared to write very smooth, making hardly a sound. So I bought it, for 95 euro. The matt black one, with silver finish and Fine nib.

But when I got home, a new disappointment awaited me.

The Expert did write very smooth on standard copier, but immediately turned into a nail when I used it on my beloved G. Lalo correspondence paper with laid finish.

Back at the store, I had the the nib replaced by another Expert Fine nib. It was dipped in ink on the service counter, and it wrote excellent on the sample of Lalo paper I brought. But back at home, once the normal ink flow was restored, this nib too started acting like a stubborn mule and refused to move smoothly over the laid finished paper. Plus, even on normal paper, the pen skipped a lot, rendering my words almost illegible.

Now what?

Again, I went back to the store, to have the nib replaced once more with another Expert Fine nib.

And at last: victory!

This particular nib didn't have any trouble finding its way over the Lalo paper. And after writing two letters just now, I have no complaints at all.

All in all, I can't understand why the Pelikans get so good reviews here. I tried them in two different stores. In both cases, they wrote just terribly on the Lalo paper, hardly shedding ink at all.

The Waterman Expert II, in contrast, doesnt't get many praise on this forum, but I like its smoothness and looks a lot.

So this was the story of how I got to own my first - more or less valuable - fountain pen.

I hope in time a lot will follow.

Are these pens with steel nibs?

I like steel nibs for italic writing, and I have a couple that are remarkably smooth, but it sounds to me that you should be looking at somethinig like a gold stub nib.

Pelikans make wonderful pens but the nibs vary a great deal

Yesterday's mail brought me a package of pens forwarded by another FPN member: two Gui Guan, a black 10 and a gold-tone 20, both with very broad nibs, a gorgeous red Hero of unknown (and unmarked) model with a flexible nib that's a little too fat and wet to really gain much from flex, a Wing Sung 230 that had a leaking section (now solvent welded and apparently leak-free), and a so-far unidentified Sheaffer cartridge filler (possibly a Skripsert of some stripe) with a bent nib that I hope to be able to straighten.

Does not always write loving messages.

Does not always foot up columns correctly.

Does not always sign big checks.

I got a Mabie Todd thin Blackbird self-filler (circa 1935). Unfortunately, it doesn't have the original nib, but the Swan No 2 replacement nib is nice and wet with a good amount of flex.
