I received my first fountain pen today, a white Lamy Safari with a fine nib. I've tried writing with it for a few minutes, and to be honest, so far it's disappointing. My Uniball 207 writes more easily than the Safari. Maybe it will grow on me.

Parker Sonnet SS CT. Alas, not for me, but a birthday present for a friend. It'll be his first FP, and I reckon, following my quick inking of it and trial to ensure all is well, he'll be a convert. My Javelin certainly wasn't that good out of the box.

Guider Marla II eye dropper in Black ebonite. I am already thinking the nib is going to become a stub.

You either love Safaris/Al-Stars or you hate 'em (IMHO)

I think they write amazingly well, but I just cant stand the clunky, industrial look of them. That 'paperclip' pocket clip is ridiculous big, and so 'school childish' that every time I get mine out. I put em away again within a few hours, but for some reason can't seem to part with 'em. Crazy.

Today I spent more on a single pen than I usually spend on all the pens I buy in a year! OK, OK, so it wasn't all that much. After all I usually buy pens in boxes of 12 for less than $10. Today I bought my first "real" fountain pen.

My first impression is the very sensual, smooth feel of the pen as it glides across the paper. Rather like ice skating. Actually, like ice skating, I had a bit of difficulty controlling the pen. As I wrote my first few sentences I was starting to wonder if I had made a mistake, bitten of more than I could chew. However, as I continue writing I am beginning to gain control. Now I am really beginning to like the feel! Also, I had a plan: get a fountain pen; slow down my writing; develop better penmanship; learn Italic.

I do have a suggestion: New readers of this site should be warned that fountain pens can be addicting. Now I have my eyes set on a nice Pelikan M200 with an italic cursive nib.

No, we want to get you thoroughly hooked before you find out how addicting it can be. Then you find that you have been assimilated and you are one of us, and there is no way back. We're much better at enabling than at helping. :roflmho:

Earlier today I posted that I was waiting to receive a Diamond Point flexy from Artaddict, which she mailed Thursday. It arrived today!!!! It is beautiful (more beautiful even than the lovely photos Pep posted in her for sale in Market Place) and writes beautifully. Pep was even kind enough to sell it to me on a payment plan, and I am glad I could get it paid off so I could use it. If I get time, and can get my scanner working, I'll do a review.

I picked up 2 pens today for a total of $26.38.

Target has a Pilot pen called the Plumix (say that 5 times fast!) It is a refillable pen with an italic nib. The package says it's an F and says nothing about it being italic, but the nib says it's an M. It is refillable and takes the same cartridges as my Vanishing Point & comes with 1 blue cart. Not sure if the converter will work in it or not. It was only $5.99 and works great.

I also stopped by the antique show here in Columbus, Ohio and ended up picking up an Esterbrook pen from the 50's for $20. It writes great and just needs a little polishing up. It's a lever fill, silver with a textured finish. No clue what name or model. Seemed like $20 was a great deal for a 50 year old pen that writes great.

My first fountain pen in many, many years, and the first one that didn't come from a grocery store. Just $5 at a local antique store.

Hello, DarkAudit

Let me be among the first to say :W2FPN: .

I'm happy to hear you've decided to give fountain pens another try. Sure would like to hear more about your venerable Parker 21 when you get a moment.

Another gentleman who really enjoys his vintage Parkers is Richard Binder. Click here to see the index of his numerous Parkers and a host of other fine pens.

Hope you continue to enjoy your newfound "21" and who knows, perhaps your enthusiasm will grow to the point where (God forbid!) you'll soon be joining the ranks of us fountain pen aficionados. :D If so, you're certainly in the right place!!! :bunny01:

Very Best Regards,

Hello, Alan!

It's great to have you out here, joining-in with the rest of us FP addicts.

Your Phileas is certainly a more than decent fountain pen to get your feet wet with, but you'll really be in for a treat once you've landed that new Pelikan M200 with a Cursive Italic nib you have your eyes set on!!! You'll be having a blast practicing your pensmanship with it, believe me ... and learning Italic will be an absolute labor of love.

A big PLUS in favor of fountain pens is the absence of wrist fatigue, as there is virtually zero resistance required/encountered for and during their operation! Now contrast that with a ballpoint pen ... where more, often times substantially more effort is required in order to lay down a line of ink.

I eagerly look forward to hearing more about your growing addiction and the fine pens you'll be picking up along the way in order to feed/satisfy that infernal addiction! :D

Cheers!

I got one of the smaller Sheaffer Balance pens in a lovely black/grey/white pattern and a Sheafer TipDip I think must be a Craftsman (I think the rule there is Craftsman=metal cap, Cadet=plastic cap). The Balance will have to get a new sac, but the TipDip is ready to go and is a lovely writer!

My uncle based in Frankfurt came home to attend a family reunion, and he brought with him two Pelikan M200s that I asked him to buy for me, a Galeria Kaufhof yellow that was on sale, and a classic black M200 from Rolf Thiel of missing-pen.de. And 6 assorted inks!

Galeria Kaufhof M200

(Now that I have this banana yellow pen I am curious about the earlier yellow Citroenpers LE. If it were a muted yellow I think I would like to have one of those too.)

My uncle, however, shocked me with his gift of a dark blue M605, with an OM nib. When he saw I was speechless with surprise he sheepishly said, "Ummm, it was on sale, so I got you one." The trim is chrome. I suspect I have managed to convert my uncle into a fountain pen enthusiast... he got himself a Pelikan Pura while hunting pens for me.

Am a happy, happy girl :)
