What Pen Did You Get Today?

George

Recommended Posts

Late last night I wrote in the "waiting for in the mail" thread that I was waiting to receive an Aurora 88 that left Tuscon Tuesday on its journey east.

Barely nine hours after typing that my mail carrier is knocking on my door. A signature and a print of my name later, and the Aurora is safely home. Rather quick trip across the continent!

As I mentioned, a very kind pen seller rearranged caps and barrels on his two 88 pens so that I could get an affordable all black 88 with gold trim. It is as lovely as I remember my previous similarly appointed 88. As expected, the broad nib is not really my cup of tea, so I have it posted in the trade section.

Now that I have the 88 to go with my blue and green auroloide Optimas, my Aurora family is complete.

The mail carrier just had me sign for my very first Aurora!

Sent from Torino, Italy, it's an Aurora 88 with Nikargenta Cap.

It's beautiful. I may be in love.

Inking will take place tonight =)

:clap1: YES, my Visconti LE Mazzi Dragon arrived today after being stuck in customs for two weeks. Can't wait to test this one out. Now to decide which ink I should use. Any suggestions?

Got my Lamy 2000 EF yesterday and it works great. Whew! I was worried that it might be otherwise.

A Rotring Newton 600 in silver came today.

This may be the first fountain pen I have ever brought, certainly the first in 20 years. I was given a Waterman in the early 1990's but never really used it. I started a thread asking for recommendations for a pen with a really secure cap, and the Newton was one of the suggestions.

I found some old European size ink cartridges in a draw that must be at least 15 years old. It took me a few minutes to work out how to put the cartridge in, and a few more minutes to work out how to take the top off (I hope it's by giving the top a very slight twist?).

It' seems to write really well, nice and smooth, the Ss are fully formed. I can only compare in to my old Waterman, which is nowhere near as good. The letters are poorly inked and I have to go back and overwrite. However, this is not fair on the Waterman because it has been sitting in a draw for 15 years, and have never been cleaned

Dear Clive,

You asked about the M 420 I received yesterday from John Mottishaw.

The full story - I hope this doesn't bore you - was that I bought cheap calligraphy set in order to try a range of different italic nibs. I soon decided that for me the hard-shoulder 1.1-mm italic was the most useful and most practical.

Then (John Mottishaw being the place where I mostly buy pens) I then looked at nibs.com and selected two possible buys.

There was a (new) gold fill M 760 'Jublilee Gold' that celebrated Pelikans 150th anniversary in 1988.

There was also a M 420 - a black pen with a sterling silver cap.

I choose the latter but JM did not have a M 400 nib large enough to make the 1,1-mm italic. So he fitted a 18-k BB from the M650/620 (cities series).

It doesn't look too big - it looks great!

I always ask for 'gushy' ink supply. I got it and, with the shiny sterling cap and silver piston-cap, the resulting pen is a smooth and beautiful daily pen.

The whole process including the regrind, repolish and custom-made italic came to $443.-

I am delighted

Hope this helps

I got my first Aurora and my first piston filler in the same pen. Went to the store to get a Pelikan but walked out with an Optima.

Yay! I got my 3 blue Parker Reflex pens from Pens N More on ebay.* Fast shipping. . .ordered it on Saturday, shipped on Tuesday and got here today, Thursday.

They came in 3 individual packages like when you buy it off the rack in the store. I opened one so far and I like it. The cap is a little tight but it's minor. I popped in the cartridge and it started up without a problem. It's just a tad scratchy but I think that will get better over time. All of my Parker Reflexes had a breaking in period, but are now as smooth as glass.

Very happy. I hope the other two work as well. Actually, I might leave one in the pack for when I need it later. I have a red Parker Reflex that I've had for about 5 years and the rubber is deteriorating, so I know these will need to be replaced eventually.

*not affiliated and all that, just describing the service so far.

Bought a green and gold Pilot Capless with F nib from a fellow FPN forumer today.

My first ever Pilot Capless.

Very smooth fine nib and the clip doesn't seem to be that bothersome.

Think I'll like this pen

Got a Parker 51 Special in Teal yesterday. After the ritual soak, loaded it up with Waterman South Sea Blue and away we go.

Does a nice fine line (I thought it looked like an XF, but it writes fine).

Dear Solitaire,

I *very* much appreciate your thorough response! And yes, without any doubt whatsoever, it really helped me.

John Mottishaw performed yet another stellar job by the sound of it ... transforming your M420 into an outstanding writing instrument. I am delighted to hear you've had the good fortune of experiencing John's superlative nibmeister handiwork, both past and present. He's a true gentleman in every sense of the word.

I'm also looking into obtaining a 1.1mm Italic nib, but haven't decided upon its physical parameters as yet. Also thinking about having a little flex put into it, too.

The image of your new black M420 with silver trim keeps resurfacing in my mind. Perhaps I should fight the urge (for once) and delay its purchase until our lackluster ecomomy gets back on track. In other words, I may never get the darned pen at this rate... :( But hey, it's the thought that counts, right?

I do wish you the very best of writing experiences with that great new M420 pen of yours! :clap1:

Cheers!

Today I received three Aurora 88 vintage pens from sanpei in Italy, two in their aluminum tubes (one blue, the other silver) complete with original guarantee and cleaning cloth. The other 88 is just as beautiful in its red clamshell box with the original guarantee. I'm thrilled to have these great writing pens as well as to own such nice examples of Aurora's history. Thanks to sanpei who is superb to deal with!

this is a bit of a ridiculous thread, with 3000+ posts...

but...

I did get a pen yesterday. A Levenger's Chesterton (is it just a fancy true-writer?), from the Ebay sale... $26 shipped, but it has initials on it, "RDK". Help me figure something clever and funny that that can stand for! Really Dumb Kittens?

The silver swirly body (acrylic?) is super attractive, except there are many "bubbles" disrupting the lines in the swirls... It's really a shame, because everything about the pen is nice.

Well... the nib. Its a B. I wanted to try B nibs recently because I saw Fuchsiaprincess's wide lines and vibrant color and wanted that for my own writing (but also, let's just try to use up some of this ink I've got, OKAY?!!) The nib is real nice so far, but occasionally it skips when it first hits the paper. I bet a free-flowing ink will take care of that problem (damn hope so!)

Anyway, I'm quite pleased, despite the funny bubbles. From far away you can't notice, and whoah is it strikingly beautiful.

Oh, I also got a second ecridor the day before, the Retro pattern, and a M nib. Got it used, but it was caked with ink. Finally cleaned it all out and now it's NIIIIIICE. Love those ecridors!!
