My F-C Marietta using short cartridges has the room to hold a spare in the barrel which edges it ahead of my Vanishing Point as my preferred note taker. I agree with most of the other posters that my inks should be semi-formal, ties optional. Maybe Diamine midnight, R&K Salix or some species of Blue-Black. Fine nibs for cheap paper.

Maybe an extra Pilot Metropolitan or two tossed in for luck, but not if I have to fly. Maybe Diamine Red Dragon or Sherwood Green in case I get bored of looking at blue.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

I took three Kaweco Sports, with cartridges, with me over Labor Day, to test the waters for a conference later this fall. They worked like champs, not even a burp. Sturdy little buggers, too. Left my Brass at home, fearing I might lose it. Not that I couldn't replace it (I like the Amaethyst Art that vaporized earlier this year). But it probably will go with me in November.

Neat! Were they touchdowns?

Only one of the two. They were both filled to the top with blues and they didn't miss a beat. They actually wrote better in Tahoe than they did in Las Vegas. The weather was better in Tahoe.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have taken many pens to meetings over the years, including an 18K gold Parker Premier and an ST Dupont Montparnasse Chairman, and I've never seen anyone pay the slightest attention to the pen I was using.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

I would take 3 pens with me in a slip leather sleeve. The first one would be my Visconti HS Bronze for its utility and pretty big ink supply. Next would be a VP for quick notes and phone numbers. Lastly would be a Uniball Signo Rollerball in case anyone needs a pen.

For inks, I'll go with utilitarian stuff, such as a blue-black (MB Twilight Blue), and a flashy one (PR Spearmint).

A Parker 51 with fine-ish nib for taking notes, probably with a workhorse blue, or perhaps PONB*.

Then perhaps, just for wow-factor, something with excessive bling

or character

Perhaps with an eye-searing orange or red, just for signing things.

I would take my Lamy 2000, fine nib with R&K Verdigris. I never use it at home because it is uncomfortable but on the road it always works great. Especially if I write in stupid places (my lap, small tables, standing, etc) and it performs good in my Leuchtturm notebooks.

And everyone knows the Lamy 2000, no one tries to borrow it and no one tries to steal it because "It is just a stupid/ugly Lamy pen.".

I'll usually bring a Lamy Safari with a "normal" ink and a Pilot Metro with a bright ink. (Lately, "normal" has meant Noodler's Zhivago, and bright is whatever red I have handy). I bring these because they've proven to be well-behaved on airplanes, they're good workhorse pens, and I won't be too upset if one gets lost/damaged.

I make sure everything's inked up before I leave, and I'll usually bring some extra cartridges just in case.

I'd say go with something noticeable. Visconti Opera Crystal and fill it with something dark but still stands out.

Visconti burgundy or Diamine Bilberry.

I'd probably take the pens I had inked already; in other words, the pens I take to work in the roll my wife made for me. There are usually four to seven of them. If I was concerned about their ink levels, I'd add one or two, top one or two off, or both.

So if it was tomorrow, that would be my Pelikan M200 with Noodler's Red-Black, Baoer 388 with Diamine Sherwood, and Platinum Plaisirs with black Platinum cartridge and Noodler's Widow Maker, and 1mm stubs filled with Noodler's Borealis Black and dilute Noodler's Purple Martin. The stubs are a bit wide for my normal hand, but useful for headings.

My two favorite current writers, an oversized Sheaffer's Balance loaded with Blakwa and a Pelikan M800 with a Binder Italifine filled with Bad Belted Kingfisher are must carries. Also a Conklin Crescent Demonstrator filled with Shin-ryoku (stub nib) and a vintage Senior Duofold or Vintage Conklin Endura filled with Asa-gao.

If it is a long trip with a lot of writing time I will toss in an Estie J with Pendleton point 9668 filled with Ancient Copper and a Mk I Parker Victory filled with Syo-ro or Tsuki-yo.

If I had to fly, back when I had an ink collection, I'd put Iroshizuku into old Goulet sample phials. Might take one phial of something more durable if there was anything "official" that needed to be done. When far, far away from home, why take anything other than very well behaved ink that you have a chance of getting out of things? I made that mistake with Sei-Boku (blue component basically 100% permanent on cotton), and vowed not to do it again.

If I'm driving, I take whatever with me. Heck, last conference I didn't even take any pens due to forgetting. Got a chance to indulge in the pleasure of writing with cheap knock-off's of "Bic Stic's" or Paper-Mate BP's at the location.

Now, if it's an event that requires recording information for posterity, then I'd use either Noodler's BP or Sailor Sei-Boku. Still don't have DeA document inks. Should have bought them when they were on sale.

So... how did it go with the two pens you carried? Any juicy anecdotes?

I hope I have convinced some people to visit and we will have a pen posse.

Just attended a conference this weekend and carried three pens: a black Jinhao x450 filled with Noodler's Purple, a Baoer 616 with black ink and a Jinhao 599 using cartridges and kept in my pocket unloaded. I also carried a ballpoint just in case someone needed to borrow it or I needed to fill out forms with awful paper.

It was important for me to bring cheaper pens that I wouldn't mind losing too much. But it was funny when someone saw the black and gold Jinhao and asked me, "Montblanc?" I laughed.

  • 7 months later...

I'm getting ready to travel to a conference and am getting my pens and inks in order. It will be a variation of my EDC although since I'll be gone for a month total, it will be more well stocked.

~ Waterman Phileas with black ink; the heavy duty writer for hours of note taking, journaling, and all forms of writing.

~ Pilot Preppie as a back up in case the Phileas stops working during hours of note taking.

~ Parker Sonnet filled with red ink for, well, you know red things

~ Sheaffer calligraphy pen (italic nib) filled with brown for section headings, dates, etc

~ a mechanical pencil for taking notes on conference materials

~ a black gel pen to loan to others or in case all the other pens inked with black give out

I also will be taking some TWSBI ink pots filled with black and red inks, syringes for refills, and a small vial of cleaning solution, just in case.

And lots of zip bags and paper towels too.

When I travel, I usually take my Kaweco Sport. It uses cartridges, which are convenient, and I don't love it, so I wouldn't be distressed if something were to happen to it.

If I thought I might need two pens, I would probably take a dollar pen (and ink in a sample vial) along with the Kaweco.
