What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

I logged on to Franklin-Christoph at 10p sharp last night and was able to grab an 02 Intrinsic in Italian Ice.  I missed the 1pm opening, as I worked night shift the night before and was sleeping.  It was fairly stressful, trying to decide so fast what I wanted, because I knew they would sell out quickly.  Can’t say I care for that type of “pen show”...where I feel forced to make a decision so fast, without having time to consider all the options as closely as I would like to.  I really love the one FC I have, and find myself using it almost exclusively, but shopping with them is no fun....they always seem sold out of most of their desirable pens - then all of the sudden they slam you with 30 in very limited numbers and you have to scrabble with the rest of the world to try to grab one before they are all gone.  Not my cup of tea.

Maybe for the best, though, if I’d had more time, I might have bought two, and I already have plans to buy another pen on Friday, when there will be a pen event in my area...

Yeah, i unintentionally used the 11 am release as the looking period--as I identified the two i wanted (both sold out when I decided I wanted them).  And then used the 10 pm release as the acquisition period--getting one of the two.  I got the model 46 blue-gold.  First clip-less pen for me.

I missed the 1pm part, and by the time I woke up and logged on, they had taken down all the sold out listings, so there were no photos to see.  But yours is a good idea, to scope them out early and then be able to buy quickly the second time around....I will have to remember that next time.

I was disappointed there weren’t more options in the 45, and I’m a little nervous about the 02 I was able to get, I’m not sure about the weird tapered shape of the barrel.  I just checked and mine is scheduled to arrive on Friday - you gotta love their fast shipping!

I was outside a Pawn Shop and saw 2 fountain pens in the window. Asked to see them - £5 each so I took them. Cleaned them up and they write very nicely!

Sweet deal, nice pens, and great handwriting.... a trifecta!

Isn't it fun to happen onto pens that way?  Especially when they're bargains?

Just had to follow up with a picture of the F-C Model 19 with the Diamondcast green and blue body...

I just can't find a way to do the material justice in a photo but this one is ok.

Decided to try a Sheaffer Prelude and was pleasantly surprised.  I think it's a great bang for the buck.

Just had a look - that's a decent looking pen. Somewhat embarrassingly, I don't think I've ever owned a Sheaffer.

I don't want to jinx by posting an auction photo, I'll wait until they arrive. Possibly a highlight of my collection, completely unexpected. On the heels of a previous post, it's some iconic Sheaffer goodness.

Back in a week or so.

That looks really great.  Is that on top of a F-C notebook cover too, or pen case?

It's one of their Firma-Flex journal notebooks. It's the second one for me I filled up one already. The paper is 90gsm sugar-cane paper that is fountain pen friendly, but not as smooth as rhodia, but works very well.

I hang my head in shame.

In my defence, I was put off by the whole macho PFM thing that still lingered in my early childhood. I went to school in the UK, but spent summers in Sweden, so most of the pens in the house were either Parker / Conway Stewart / Swan or Pelikans, with the occasional bit of Italian frippery, so they've just never been on my radar in the same way that British and European pens have been. I don't have any 'serious' Japanese pens either (though I am starting to look at them with more interest recently).

I'd better go and browse the appropriate places and look for a recommendation for something I might like.

Funny, because this is exactly what made me consider buying a PFM in the first place: Pen for MEN? Yeah, we´ll see about that...

😂

The perfect specimen hasn't come my way yet, but we will see.

Oh my, nothing to apologize for! I was just having fun, and you were raised in a lovely consort of pen companies. I have a fondness for Penol, for example, though I own none. Hit me up if you do want to discuss future purchases or interest in the Sheaffer family. For now, I think you have wonderful pens and need not hang any body part in shame!

Lulz! To be honest, I have a number of friends who aren't men in the same boat, and we have all simply agreed that it was meant to stand for "Pen For Moi". And the biggest selling point - for me - is the width of the section, larger and more comfortable for my hand. If you like the inlaid nibs but a slimmer pen, there are Imperials, and if you want the Snorkel, the old... Snorkel. But, yeah, we're waaay past the man thing... or should be.

Wow.  That's really pretty -- not normally a color I'd go for but that is really nice.  But I can't tell the size from the photo, and would be afraid of it being too big or heavy a pen for me.

Early on in my sojourn on FPN, someone posted a video of an old ad from the late 1950s I think: "Buy your husband a PFM for Christmas!  You know he wants one!"

And my initial gut reaction was "What sexist garbage!"  But the ad also included a demo of the Snorkel fill system, and that left me going "Oh, KEWL!"  I suspect a PFM would be a bit too big for my hand -- but I now have a bunch of regular Snorkels, all because of that ad -- and I've gotten really good deals on some of the lower tier models (last summer I got a bottom tier one at a "Christmas in July" sale at an area antiques shop, and because I paid cash got it for a whole whopping $8 US -- plus of course, the cost of having it checked out/repaired, when pen shows start happening again).

Well it's all OK. I was bidding on a nice little Dinkie Lumina today, and spotted the seller had a couple of Sheaffer's, so I've corrected my non-ownership status and have one on the way. I appear to have bought something of an oddity, but it looked pretty, and the sort of size I tend to like. So we'll see in a few days!
