Just last week: Pilot Kakuno - couldn't resist that winking nib any longer. And since that wasn't enough to justify an online order, I also got a Pilot Penmanship (I like extra fine nibs), a Pilot Metropolitan fine (had a medium but it was too fat, gave it away), and a Pilot CON-70 (for the Kakuno). I justified it by saying I could swap the nibs into the Metropolitan depending on my mood. Right now, all three are inked...

On September 5th I wrote about an impulsive Jinhao purchase - along with a Goulet nib and Schmidt converter - all for under $25.00 usd.

That was then.

This is now.

Over this weekend, I succumbed to the irresistible beauty of a Conway Stewart Marlborough Vintage LE lever filler in blue ebonite with an 18k medium italic nib. The pen is in once filled condition with the box, papers and other neat stuff, including what now has to be a very stale Churchill cigar.

So much for pondering major purchases. The pen should be here on Thursday and I know it will clear up any remaining angst.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

That's the way to do it: exploit the seller's ignorance!

Over the weekend I went to a flea market/antiques fair. The pens I saw were mostly junk (including the requisite banana-curved lever-filler. :( One dealer had a brand I'd never heard of before, called "Fineline". The guy tried to tell me that it was the pen that JFK used signing the paperwork ending the Cuban Missile Crisis! I said "Really? I thought he used Esterbrooks...." The guy called me a smart-ass. But then turned to the guy at the table with him and said "Hey, did you know that JFK used an Esterbrook fountain pen?" and then seemed surprised that it wasn't something like a Parker....

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Haha, most sellers exploit the buyer's ignorance, so it is nice to turn the tables once in a while :P

The pen arrived a day earlier than expected; a good pen day! Now to curb further impulse!

Yeah, most of mine are sadly impulse driven! Some are well thought out and planned but way too many are impulse driven. The last one was a PFM5 that I took in partial trade for a pen I was selling, just planned to sell the pen not pick up a new one and didn't have the PFM in my hand but 2 seconds before agreeing on the price and the trade.

Walked by the Muji store in Hollywood. Turned around and walked in. Walked out with their fountain pen. Okay for $18. Something different anyways.

I will find out this weekend when I head to the NASCAR races in Joliet IL. I will do the antique tool and see what happens this year. I did well last year, picked up 3 Parker Vacs & a Chilton total 55 dollars for the two days I was pen hunting. Sold the Chilton at the Chicago pen show this year for 250.00

I just bought a Sailor Black 1911 style Realo with a Broad nib. I lusted after this pen after I tried my first broad sailor nib. Very hard to find.

I love this pen with Sailor Shigure (purple) ink. I carry it everywhere and just can't keep my hands off of it...ahhh...boys and their toys.

A Baoke PM 151 Lamy Safari clone, a Hero 368 Mermaid (an interesting variation on a Hero Safari clone), and a Playboy (supposedly)F7607T which has a nib with the bunny on it. The Playboy pen is so Chinese in its aspirations to be a luxury item. It is thwarted by cheap gold plating and a total misunderstanding of the Playboy brand. All were bought in a stationery store near the Lama Temple in Beijing.

I bought a Faber-Castell Loom as a gift to a friend. For some reason, I decided I needed one for myself, too, when ordering his.

I am now waiting for the pens to arrive...
