What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

I suffer from insomnia, I've had sleep problems ever since I was child. Sometimes I take a sleeping pill and, if I stay up after the sleeping pill has kicked in, I tend to be a bit impulsive with the old online purchasing, to the extent that I will read an 'order confirmation' email the following morning and have noooooooooooo recollection of having a) ordered anything, or b) spending any time at all online.

But today I have not taken a sleeping pill, so I have no excuses.

I went online to look for a semi-flex nib. Never used a flex nib before, was curious, thought I'd find something. I ended up choosing a Studio Pocket Pen v2.0 from Tom's Studio. I don't need to carry pens around in my pocket/bag/briefcase, they live in boxes or cases on my desk, so I have no concerns about the doubts other people have about the durability of the anodised aluminium finish.

Aaaaaaand then I thought I'd wander over to Cult Pens just to look. Only look. Yep. Don't need to buy anything, I just bought a pen from Tom's Studio. (And a second nib for the pen for when I want to mix things up.)

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand then I bought three Sailor Professional Gear Slim Mini Rencontres from Cult Pens.

What? What are you lookin' at?

I've never owned a Sailor before. I have a thing about resin/acrylic/etc (I'll just use the vague word 'plastic' from now on) pens, I don't like them. I like wooden and metal pens, always have. There's something about 'plastic' pens that makes them feel a bit.... cheap, to me. I know that is silly, given the ££££££££ price tag that some 'plastic' pens carry, but it's just this instinctive reaction I have to them. I have some Pilot Penmanships, which I love for their cheap and easy vibe. I can use them for testing new inks, washing them out is a doddle, so changing ink isn't a chore, and I really like the teeny tiny nibs. Those are cheap, I don't care that they don't feel like quality, pricey pens. The only other non-wood/metal pen I own is a Pelikan M400 in white tortoiseshell. Now, that's a huge change for me, because on top of not liking 'plastic' pens, I also don't like the general aesthetic of Pelikans; they are often very dark, heavy, traditional colours and that doesn't vibe with me, but I love my white tortoiseshell.

Anyway, I decided to challenge my perspective on resin/acrylic pens and reasoned that Sailor seems like a pretty good place to start. I like a bit of feedback from a nib, so the things I've read about Sailor nibs really appeal to me. I bought the Sailor Professional Gear Slim Mini Rencontre in Vert Sapin, Lapin (I want to dedicate that one to black ink, a colour I only use when addressing letters and I need a waterproof ink), and Glycine Violet. Threw some washi tapes into the basket as well.

I'm really excited! As I mentioned above, I do like a fine nib, so I think the Medium Fine Sailor nib will suit me well. The pens will arrive Thursday. And the semi-flex nib will be an adventure. Tom's Studio offered a discount on a spare nib, I bought a Fine nib, which will allow me to use the pen even if I can't come to terms with the semi-flex.

Essay over. Thank you for not judging me.

Thank you for your therapeutic confession. I see myself in each sentence 🤗 😅

I absolve thee, in the name of the Fine nib, the Broad and the Semi Flex. 🙏

Pfffft. I’ve come this far, I may as well go all in.

I just ordered the Pelikan M200 EF in copper rose gold.

If anyone knows how to trade half-empty ink samples for food, please let me know…

I will see your Pelikan M200 Copper Rose Gold and I raise you a Pelikan M800 1000 Years of Austria from 1996 I found on ebay. I don´t think anyone could accuse that pen of being too dark and boring colourwise. 😉 Right now, it is somewhere in transit between southern Germany and Austria and should arrive during the next days.

It was pure chance. I had sometimes thought about that model and that it would be cool to have one, but I simply wasn´t prepared to pay the price the sellers are asking. I have never been very actively looking for one though. And then, last week, I typed that pen into the search function on a whim - and lo and behold, there was one, complete with box and everything for about the same price Pelikan initially asked for it. And I was the only bidder. 😁 So, as finzi put it: Pfffft. I’ve come this far, I may as well go all in.

@finzi -- I see why you hit the buy button on that pen (I did a Google Image search...).

@carola -- Lucky for me that M800s are too large and heavy for my hand....  That certainly an attractive pen (but of course WAY too rich for my blood).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."
