What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

A Faber-Castell Neo Slim in “black rosegold” finish with EF nib, picked up on a detour on my way home after a run in the park. The model I actually want to have is the new Neo Slim Aluminium (which the Dymocks bookstore does not have), but so far I have only seen units of it with F nib discounted to a level I'm happy with, and so I wait… unless I'm prepared to get it with F nib and then swap nibs with the black rosegold one I bought.

If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Just ordered a Sailor Kyoto gardens with music nib.  I know Sailors isn’t a real music nib but a wet stub sounds great.

On a pure impulse buy, I ordered a Pilot Prera to finish off my fountain pen weekend. Thought about getting one years ago but didn't as it won't take a con-70, but don't care at the moment. I've never had issues with pilot cartridges with ink sticking or flow problems. Unlike the con-40 ;)

Since I use the Walmart app to place grocery pick up orders, some of what I shop for has Walmart Cash offers. I claim the Walmart Cash if it works for me. I had accrued close to $20.  I first looked for Kaweco AL Sport pens. One was a light blue, which was not showing up in many web searches.

I changed the search to Kaweco Sport to see the plastic versions. The Frosted Banana showed up, and I ordered it. The Walmart Cash covered all but $11.12.

Umm... Buying pens very impulsively seems to have gotten a tiny bit out of hand with me this week.

First, I was waiting for news of 5 pens I had sent in for repairs, which was supposed to cost me nothing due to some favourable deals. While waiting, I got two pens practically flung at me at a price you can´t possibly say no to (again) and well, of course I said "Oh, what the heck, just put them in the box with the others already, I am going to bang my head against the wall for the rest of my life if I say no anyways." Which resulted in these pens arriving at my doorstep on Friday:

Pelikan M101N Tortoise Brown

large.PelikanM101NSchildpattbraun_01.jpg.d212674beaceb6591028da979cfa6024.jpglarge.PelikanM101NSchildpattbraun_02.jpg.6ad7a641eae435b12fe3224ff13f7b5a.jpg

Pelikan M101N Bright Red

large.PelikanM101NBrightRed_01.jpg.2c93fd76a39d3fe90aff42c11471bbf7.jpglarge.PelikanM101NBrightRed_02.jpg.5da4bdaa6c5ac963b017004cf0adc2a1.jpg

Both of them without boxes, but new enough to still wear their tags.

I thought yeahyeahyeah, everything´s fine. I had thought about maybe buying the Bright Red when it came out, but other things had been more urgent and then... well, it just didn´t happen. And the Tortoise Brown had so much risen in price, I had just decided that I didn´t need it. But what can you do when both of them are offered to you at a significantly lower price than when they were initially sold? You grab them.

Last night, I was looking at this Pelikan series and thinking how nice a pair this new Tortoise and my old full Tortoise from the 1930s are, and what a pity it is that the red one doesn´t have a 101N counterpart, just a 100, which is probably unobtanium. And THEN my thoughts began to wander, how nice it would be to have the M101N Lizard and the M101N Blue Grey as companions for my 101N Lizard and my 100N Grey marbled. While shoving that thought around in my head, I happened to go on ebay and start negotiations with the seller of a Blue Grey, while eyeing a Lizard at the same time. And while I was doing all this, I noticed that a Japanese seller, who had put a Pelikan 450 pencil in Light Tortoise up for grabs at a truly insane price (we are talking 4 digit range here), had decided that less than half the initial price would do. I had pinned that pencil to my watch list just to have a good laugh every time I saw the price they wanted. I chuckled, thought that the price could still be lower and typed in a number bordering on sumgai. To my surprise, it wasn´t declined straight away.

Returning to the Blue Grey, I got a deal, which of course made me think "Okay, what you don´t have now of this series, is the one you want most - the Lizard. Ah, what the heck, go ahead and buy it, chances are you won´t ever get it any cheaper than this." So, hit they "Buy it now" button it was. And then, just when I wanted to shut the computer down to go to bed, the Japanese seller woke up and declined my offer. What to do? I typed in an offer I knew SHOULD be acceptable for both sides and lo and behold, the seller seemed to think the same. So now, this pen

is waiting for this pencil (seller´s picture)

to live happily ever after as the beautiful pair they are.

The End. Well, except my bank account is banging its head on the table right now, but money is for spending, right? 😆

Thank you for reminding me of that. I also need to gather all my Kaweco pens for a photo. Then I’ll know how many I’ve bought since I went on a Kaweco buying spree.

HongDian N8 ‘White Feather’, finally discounted when for a year or so it was always only its ‘Maple Leaf’ sibling that was offered at seemingly clearance prices.

Yesterday afternoon, I ordered this:

large.LAMYAL-starSlytherininretailpackaging.jpg.f78444d22e73375460ae5b94b43a0431.jpg

… and conveniently collected it from the store right on my way to a couple of social activities. Stacked discounts sealed the deal, after habitual reaction against recent negative chatter that seemed to respect no boundaries made me go look at something not interesting to me.

It's funny how everyone else seemed to want to focus on someone several times removed, or detailing that was not chosen for the product design, but not glaring eyesores on the pen.

large.LAMYAL-starSlytherindisassembled.jpg.3f0c1fb364fdabd388b366d9cbf2aedb.jpg

Now, if this was my pen, I would put the Hanzi nib on it instead, not the least because I maintain the nib's shape looks like giving someone the finger while cursing in Chinese.

large.LAMYAL-starSlytherinwithHanzinib.jpg.41e5c0edafd5f5cb604859acfe7472f5.jpg

But, since my wife quickly claimed the pen for herself, the EF nib originally supplied will have to do. A bit dry-flowing, and with nearly enough feedback to count as scratchy.

To be fair, at least one person in that thread remarked on finding the appearance of the Slytherin pen distasteful, despite being fairly interested by the others.

I personally didn't see any point in saying something like 'I don't find the appearance to be appealing to me' - the remark would not have been of much use/interest to anyone.
Why should anyone else care whether or not anything appeals to my particular aesthetic tastes? It's just not relevant to anyone else's decision about whether or not they would like to purchase the pen 🤷‍♂️
And after all, if each of us made that remark on every discussion about any pen that didn't appeal to us, the whole of FPN would be overwhelmed by such posts.

I agree with your own thoughts about it in that the characteristic that I find least-appealing about the Slytherin pen is the presence on it (& on the others too) of those two "©WBEI" imprints.
Other than that, I find the Slytherin pen to have a 'pleasingly reptilian' look to it :)

Regarding the fact that the barrel can be screwed on to the grip section in 'opposite' orientations:
it's not a 'bug'; it's a 'feature'!
It enables one to disguise one's allegiance to Slytherin/the Dark Lord/He Who Must Not Be Named from the casual observer if one wishes, but also allows one to display one's loyalty when among friends co-conspirators ;)

(Hmm, for someone who says that he isn't particularly a Potter fan, I do seem to have absorbed a lot of  - and have a childish enthusiasm for - the series' lore.)

Well, (in the interests of earning my 'Wicked Penabler' badge), you could always buy another one for yourself... ;)

Saw a really nice Opus 88 Bela on pen swap on reddit at an attractive price so I nabbed it. I'm planning on swapping in a flex nib onto it to take advantage of that huge reservoir of ink on tap.
