What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

I was totally unfamiliar with Nahvalur pens until now.  Imagine my surprise when I looked up their website and saw that they are an American company.  Fancy that, fountain Pens UK members pen made in the USA!

I also discovered that this pen is an Original Plus model.

@Lam1, very nice!  What nib size did you choose?

I know this feeling where you are simply looking for ink and then your eyes lock on to some bit of shiny-shiny… which then comes home with you.

Thanks, @Mechanical.

I got an M. They had the M and F, but I already have a VP with F - I never use the F, I put a Stub on it and that’s what I use. I’ll probably put a stub on this one too.

But, yeah, I should know better about going to pen stores… since I don’t have one anywhere near me, it is very hard to resist when I visit one.

They're called Livás (Λιβάς). You can meet the sons of the founder (Periklis & Nikos) together in the shop at all times :)

Wonderful people indeed and they offer an impeccable service both online and in presence. I find myself always looking for an excuse to visit the physical store just for the good vibes (i.e. I choose to pick up my online orders from the store -- it's located downtown and on my everyday route to work).

Thank you, for reminding me of their names. Indeed, I met the two brothers and they were wonderful!

It must be wonderful to live in a city with such a great pen shop… not to mention the “one or two” attractions and the “wee bit” of history! 😊

Congratulations... it is a nice looking pen. A few weeks ago it prompted me to buy another VP, then a Majohn A2, then an old Namiki Capless with the facets. These things have a way of multiplying. I had a VP, Decimo, and Fermo already...

Thank you!

Yes, the VP is a wonderful pen an I can see why some folks have lots of them. Somehow I managed to have only one so far (this is my second). But the first one has a very special meaning, since it was a gift from my mother.

Wow!  Somehow it never penetrated my brain that I could get a VP with a stub.  Looks like it's a 1.0mm 18k gold nib. It's pretty darn wonderful, I bet.

Currently most used pen: Lamy 2000, Makrolon <F> -- filled with Lamy Pink Cliff ink

I've waited months for this little gem to arrive from FPUK.  The wait was worth it!

It the 2024 limited edition offering to members.  It is a plunger fill made my Nahvalur.  It came with the cardboard and foam presentation box you see in the photo.  it also came with two nibs; the broad I ordered, and a medium.  Each nib is in the same rich blue (So says the red/green colour blind man.  It could be purple for all I know.).  All in all, it is nice pen, and it didn't cost much at all.

(NOTE TO SELF:  Ask someone if it is blue or purple.  It probably is purple)

Congratulations, that's a very nice looking pen, and 2 nibs -Wow!... 👍😀

I never thought of that either...  😀

Sheaffer Statesman touchdown-filler with an Accountant nib. Gives a line width to rival a Pilot EF or Platinum UEF, all with a smoother feel. I regret nothing.

Oh, there are more dedicated stores in Athens; close to Livas there's Evangelidis (est. 1935 http://fountainpen.gr) and of course Zafeiriou, who's located in the far north-west suburbs of Athens and is a global player in the fountain pen market.

There's also a LAMY store in the center (apart from the ubiquitous Montblanc boutique which I guess you've passed by going to pen-store), a Pilot - Sailor - Montegrappa authorized dealer, and a Pelikan direct subsidiary (that's why Pelikan leaflets that you get with the pens are also written in Greek -- a rare incidence).

Well... today I ordered an Alvin V126 with a F nib. I don't need this pen, I have other vac fillers I don't much use and they tend to dry and need to be cleaned before ˆI've used up all the ink in them. But it's only $28 and reviews have been good. Not sure how impulsive it is when you take time to watch reviews first, but it's frosted matte black! I should have it from Amazon tomorrow.

Bought an inexpensive Pilot retractable fountain pen from Amazon for about $75. Just got it. Pen has some heft, but the nob looks extremely small. So far it seems to write fairly smoothly. Nib is a fine point and seems to be a lot finer than most of my other fine points, almost like an extra fine.

Always wanted to try one, and I had a couple of other things for the order, so I went with it. I'll try it as a daily writer for the next couple of weeks and see where it goes from there.

I think it is more of a 08-0.9 mm - at least it does feel substantially thinner than my 1.1 stubs.

The VP Stub can be quite divisive: some people love and some seem to hate it. I am among those that absolutely love it!

It has a different grind, almost like a cube, and it is sharper than most of my stubs - it feels almost like a CI, and the closest stub I have in terms of behavior is an Aurora Optima (but that is a sample of 1, for both the VP and the Optima, so take all this with a grain of salt).

Oh, my! I'd be broke if lived there! 😂

I did find the Evangelids online, but decided to visit only the pen-store. and yes, I did pass by the MB boutique, which had no pens in their windows! But I usually don't go to boutiques, since I find the whole attitude off-putting (nothing against MB pens, of which I have quite a few, just the whole attitude in a MB boutique). I also saw a few Jewelries that had MBs, including one that had 3 MB Bohemes, but at a price that was beyond what I consider reasonable for those pens (well into the $1K+).

But I did not know of Zafeiriou, Lamy or that Pelikan had a subsidiary there! (I did find a Pelikan M200 for 10 euros at a flea market. There were quite a few MB, mostly BP, too - the two I looked one MB oblige and a BP, seemed legit).

All in all it seems pretty close to pen paradise to me!

Nor should you regret!

Those Sheaffer Touchdown are pretty awesome!

Thanks, @Lam1 this helped a lot.

Two questions, if I may... First, being 18k gold, does this have a soft touch?  Or is it a stiff, firm nib?  Second, when you say the grind is almost like a cube, does this mean there is effectively only one writing angle?  That is, do you have to hold the pen so the bottom face of the cube is flat on the paper?

You are obviously willing to invest a lot of money in your/our hobby 🙂 !

Hope they all have perfect nibs and you enjoy all of them.
