What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

That’s a very nice pen @Gloucesterman. Really like the Man 100 and Gentleman I just acquired, might have to look at adding an Edson someday. My wife keeps telling me to pick a nice pen for my birthday ha ha. @inkstainedruth it’s more about shape than size for me. Where the swells are etc. I love the Pelikan M10000 and will probably add one someday. The KoP suits me better because of that than the MB149 and Custom Urushi and if I ever have a friend letting one go at a great price will probably take it on a long term test drive! Unlikely I’ll ever own one of the other two. @dms525 that’s a gorgeous pen.

You wondering this brought to mind that I have the same admiration for Yard-O-Led.  They have grace, style, and equally important to me, history.  I can easily afford to buy one, but my personal ethics prevent my making what I consider (within myself and for myself only) an extravagant and 'selfish' purchase solely for the sake of ego-gratification.

 

But, that's me and my problem.

Only if you have a "tip dip/touchdown", snorkel, or small nib format pen... the side reservoir in the old Sheaffer bottles still won't let you get the last of the ink with a long, open feed style nib like the one in a PGS.

Plus many of the original era ('50s?) caps are rusty now

 

I just can't see the benefit in having less ink capacity *and* higher chances of spreading pathogens around my ink supply.

You could test the size by buying a Jinhao X159, the pen I mentioned I purchased on the previous page, as it's almost identical... they're €11 in Europe but only about $6 in America (and probably half that in China).

I have several vintage Conways and a few modern ones including a Churchill. I love them. They are great pens. All of my vintage Conways date from before the 1950s except one that was my late wife's school pen from the 1960s.

Somehow labeling it a problem does you a disservice.

Our values are the way we guide and manage our life experiences.

 

When I set up my table at the Commonwealth Pen Show, I post a sign noting that I donate at least 10% of my profits to various charities. In fact, I end up donating much more because knowing that the money is being used to buy food, medical equipment, care services and other such stuff has given me much more pleasure and satisfaction than any pen I have ever owned.

 

One interesting thing is that, thus far, no one has ever asked me about which charities I have supported.

  I don’t think they are, unfortunately. @Merrick was kind enough to let me try his  Luminous Shadow KOP and we put my Pro Gear Slim next to it, and the size difference was massive. It’s not heavy, but cumbersome for my hand size and grip style. I was given some Peter Pan pens that day as well, and that size comparison was hilarious!

Or I could just read the KoP technical specs on the Goulet Pens website....  That gives the weight for pens both posted/capped and unposted.

As for me, last night I hit the buy button for a couple of Parker Vectors when the seller made an offer.  With tax & shipping the pens and the two included cartridges will cost less than $8 apiece -- each one will cost less than I paid for my original Vector years ago, new in a store!  

Of course a couple of converters (assuming I don't have any spare ones at this point) will cost more than I'm paying for the pens did, but still roughly puts the total price apiece in the range of the most expensive Vectors I've ever bought over the years.

Well that, and the massive amounts of aggravation I had since yesterday with PayPal....  (And PayPal wonders why I absolutely REFUSE to connect them to my bank account! )

I don't have a real Pro Gear Slim, it's too slim for me, but I do have a Jinhao 82. Here's a set of pics comparing the Luminous Shadow to the Jinhao 82 and a full size Pro Gear, capped and uncapped. For the capped I lined them up at the band at the bottom of the cap. For the uncapped pics I lined them up at the furniture at the bottom of the section. For an additional size reference there's also a set of pics with the Luminous Shadow, the Pro Gear full size, and a 1911L.

I suspect this was a trial run for a new line of Sailor pens, similar to how the King of Pen got a Realo limited edition before the 1911 and Pro Gear lines got them as regular releases. Unfortunately it looks like the Luminous Shadow pens sold poorly as they are discounted at every retailer for $580, much lower cost than what North American retailers normally sell King of Pen models for, so I am not holding my breath that we will see L and S size Luminous Shadow pens.

I would be second in line for that pen.  I love my 1911 Realo.  I’d love it even more if it was a PG.

I got a price alert that a Pilot 743 in FM was on sale for under $170, just got that one in last night. It’s got that famed Pilot smoothness with just a hint of feedback from being a finer nib width. It almost makes me want to get an 823 in M.
