What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

I know absolutely nothing at all about that pen, but that feed ‘nipple’ arrangement reminds me of the equivalent in my Pilot 78G.

On the 78G that upright edge on one side of the feed ‘nipple’ is there to push on one side of the plastic disc that seals Pilot’s cartridges, so that it pivots/tilts within the cartridge, thereby ‘opening’ it and allowing the ink to flow.

If I were you I would attempt to measure the diameter of the inner edge of the outer wall of the grip-section, and also the outer edge of that feed-spike/‘nipple’.
If you can find out what those measurements are, you will be better-placed to try to find out what cartridges will fit into the pen.

Slàinte,
M.

Had the same thought. And Pilot cartridges can be had very inexpensively. Might be worth a gamble to just try one.

I was able to snag one of my wishlist pens, a BENU Briolette in Milky Way for a deal price. Couldn’t pass it up. Super happy with it on a nib test. Can’t wait to ink it up.

I was looking for a pocket pen yesterday. I already have several, but have them all with 1.1. stubs or flex-tuned nibs, and I wanted one for sketching for my upcoming trip to New York. I have been saving up for a Kaweco AL Piston filler, but... some unexpected expenses drained my savings and anyway, I wouldn't take it for an intensive tourism/sketching week out of fear of losing it.

What's so impulsive about this? I was considering an AL Sport, a Steel Liliput or an M2. But then, out popped a Lamy Logo in an Amazon search for its standard retail price.

Now, I do think the Logo is a masterpiece; designed after the Hastil, with many of its improvements tweaked, modernized (light, slim, spring clip, metal body, stoppers for posting,...) and somewhat "improved" (a lot cheaper, can swap nibs...) though it can be improved and, from my point of view, wasn't properly marketed. I had bought one long ago, loved it and gave it away to one of my sons.

Sadly, the Lamy Logo fountain pen seems no longer to be made, only ballpoints, and as it has almost disappeared, the last ones I've seen demand absurd prices (~190 Eur instead of ~20).

So, when I saw it, all my intentions for a pocket pen went out through the window and I snatched the Logo and a couple of converters. I will be taking it for my trip to NY and see how it bears being in a frantic tourist/sketcher's pocket/bag -though I expect, it being steel, that it will take it like a champ.

Now back to saving again for the Kaweco AL Piston Sport. :)

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

I placed an order for Toms Studio Pocket pen!

It is smaller than the Kaweco Sport at 99mm when closed but when posted it measures 163mm so much more like a normal pen.

From the reviews I also see that unlike the Kaweco there are no threads to interfere with your fingers when writing. It is also designed in such a way as to be used as an eyedropper if you are so inclined, although it is recommended that you use some silicone grese just for extra safety.

On top of that, I have used other implements from Toms Studio and apart from being extremely well manufactured they are also very functional. His feeds, especially for the Pro-Flex nib are a new design he has done and there is no issue with railroading, nib starvation etc. but my order is for an italic nib this time.

I ordered the Wisteria colour just for something different.

I have watched a number of reviews on it but yesterday, this review tipped me onto my credit card!

Thank you both so much. You are exactly right. I slipped a Pilot cartridge in, pushed gently until I felt that satisfying pop, and now the pen is writing away. I suppose a CON-40 or CON-70 would work as well. The funny thing is that I have several Pilot pens, including a Grance, a Grandam, and a Custom Heritage 91, so I already had the cartridges. I just never happened to look into the section of any of them or I would have recognized that design myself.

Oh, my goodness! That is simply spectacular!

Congratulations.

My latest impulsive acquisition was a Pelikan M450 Light Tortoise (also called green tortoise).

I was minding my own business yesterday, working, and received an email with a link to it... what can one do?

Still waiting for it.

Glad it worked. Several of my latest round of impulse spending should be here today.

Today it was a couple more estate sale finds (apparently, the previous owner did artwork including calligraphy).  One was a black Sheaffer (I think a No Nonsense).  There were 2 nib units along with the one installed on the pen (I think they end up being F, M & B italic nibs).  The other was an Osmiroid lever filler (!) and that also came with an extra nib, but I don't remember what they are offhand (I didn't sleep well last night for various reasons, and then misread the time for the sale to start, so got there about 2-1/2 hours early...).

Not sure yet how the Osmiroid comes apart for servicing.  Hoping that since No Nonsense pens are pretty modern I'll be able to find a converter for that pen.

The real concern I have with both pens though, is that the only ink that seemed to be at the sale was Higgins India ink (a couple of dried out bottles) so I'll have to see if I've got any Rapido-Eze kicking around.  I know I did at one point, but not how old it is or how much i've got left.  There is a Dick Blick in the area, as well as some other art stores & craft stores, so I will check around.

But for $5 for the two pens and the three extra nib units?  I just couldn't resist....  (I did pass on a Platinum calligraphy set because it appeared that one of the nib units was missing -- plus I have one that I've never actually tried.... :headsmack:

I'm either not holding up my end here, or I have successfully suppressed all pen lust temptations.  I haven't bought -- impulsively or otherwise -- a pen since mid-March.

Just a heads up Ruth...

I am pretty sure that the early/lever fill Osmiroids can use the regular (all series) Esterbrook nibs. As for India ink issue, Rapido-Eze, an ultrasonic cleaner and a good knock-out block (along with some work and patience) should have you writing any way you want.

If you come to the Commonwealth Pen Show, I expect to have some of the Esterbrook flex nibs as well as some other "special" ones if you are still looking by then.

Oh Paul, don't be so hard on yourself.

I am sure you will ketchup easily and soon as you do relish both the process AND the results!

Blue marble Pelikan Classic 205, medium nib. I've never had a Pelikan, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Nice pen

Pretty, comfortable in the hand, holds a good amount of ink, well-built, nibs of different widths can be easily swapped-in to it, and it is easy to deep-clean it or re-lubricate its piston, and it is reliable :)

But beware!

I started with an M205 - and I foolishly pooh-poohed the warning that I had often seen given on FPN about the tendency of Pelikans to ‘breed in captivity’.

Nothing happened for a few years, so I relaxed, and forgot about the warning.
must have ‘let my guard down’, because I now find that my home contains that M205, two Pelikanos, a 400, an M400, an M800, and an M805.

Must. Try. Harder. To. Exercise. Some. Self-restraint!

Not only is resistance futile, I happen to know Mercian is dreaming about a Pelikan 400 in tortoise with an M nib right now.

I think self restraint isn't going to happen in the long run. 😂

Is an oxymoron here on FPN.

Just MHO/experience, of course.

I swore to myself I was done buying new pens for atleast the rest of the year. I don't know what possesed me to look at Leonardos special editions, but the moment I did my resolve deserted me and, whambam, a gorgeous dark teal blue Juma dragon skin MZG with a #8 nib was bought, without hesitation. It really is the last pen purchase for this year, maybe longer.
