What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

Thanks, David. The Realo is really a pen close to my heart, the first limited edition pen I purchased and done so because it was from Mottishaw. This is #25 of 88 made for him in this combination of colors, and the cap ring is engraved "20 YEARS CFP NIBS.COM" (CFP being Classic Fountain Pens, the name of his business). He put a mild italic on the M nib, and there is not another pen in my large-ish collection that writes better, or has been inked *continuously* since purchase, this one in 2016. I'm very glad you like it.

Hi, Jon. After sending my reply, I remembered seeing that pen a few years back on the nibs dot com web site. I have a small collection of Realos. All but one have CI custom grinds and are wonderful writers. However, I find the plain black or burgundy resins a bit boring.

Well, I've had several. I bought a Pilot Prera Iro-Ai with a CM nib. I tried a friend's one and really liked that stub-like nib. It also came with a converter, another bonus. Then I bought a Pilot Kakuno in EF to go with a Hobonichi Plain Handbook, because it seemed like a reasonable way to get a nice TR paper notebook with the Yamazakura cover by Tomitaro Makino. The Kakuno helped fill in the order so I could get free shipping from Jetpens. However, while it wrote well, I didn't really care for the EF nib and ordered one with an F nib. Liked that one better, so then I ordered one with an M nib out of curiosity, which is very nice and smooth. So, in all, four Pilots, mostly inexpensive in about a month. Then I found the Majohn A2, which is a Pilot Decimo capless pen lookalike. Got curious and almost bought it from Amazon, but a friend gave me a link to AliExpress, where I got it for $10 for my first order from them. Waiting for that to see how it is and how AliExpress holds up. Pretty darn impulsive this past month or so! 🙄

At least all your recent ‘impulsive’ buys have all been reasonably-inexpensive.
You’ve managed to get five pretty good pens for less outlay than the price of just one Pelikan Souverän or Montblanc Meisterstück or Visconti HS or Graf von Faber Castell (etc).

And, should your partner question your recent ‘impulsiveness’, this is how to justify this ‘spending spree’!

(Since you ask, yes; I am currently wearing my ‘Evil Enabler’ hat, and twirling the end of my moustache 😉)

Sailor Luminous Shadow, having seen it mentioned here recently.

Add lightness and simplicate.

I have acquired two Sailors recently, and the second one in particular was an impulsive purchase.

I got a Sailor Pro Gear Sky and a Sailor Pro Gear KoP Sky in the last month. I love my blue pens, and I love my Sailors, so this has been a real quest for me. As this was a limited edition from about 10 years ago, it has not been easy for me to track it down.

The KoP Sky was an impulsive purchase because after acquiring the standard Pro Gear Sky, I let myself give in to the temptation. I can't wait to pick it up next weekend (even though my wallet has been lightened considerably) !

Iam in the same boat, have ordered another KoP in medium nib after having one already in the bold nib. The price on Amazon was too unreal to refuse.

Are these directly from Amazon?  Or from 3rd party vendors?

Asking just in general, because I've had some really bad experiences with 3rd party vendors for other items.  And in another instance, could NOT believe that ordering something directly from the seller was going to be MORE expensive than going through Amazon (I ended up finding what I wanted from a different seller).

They are directly from Amazon, not a separate vendor.

Stephens Leverfil No. 270. Nothing fancy but still an attractive pen.

Not a fountain pen, but an impulsive acquisition nonetheless - a letter opener. And not just any letter opener...a replica of Longclaw. Although season 8 sort of spoiled the entire series for me (knowing this finale takes the fun out of rewatching it all), I just remember anxiously waiting each week for the new episode... Besides, the (very) famous tagline "you know nothing jon snow" remains relevant...as in always being aware of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

Very nice. I had a scaled-down replica of an infantry bayonet letter opener decades ago.  It, amongst other things, went missing after moving from one place or another during my working life.

Well, I have wanted a Custom Urushi for a long time, but they're just so darn expensive. So when I found a sole nib for comparatively little money (approx. 200 USD), I went for it. Ranga pens kindly provided a pen body for it, and now I can enjoy this unique creation:

Nice letter-opener! 👍

Open the spoiler if you would like to see one of my customary Thread hijack posts:

Spoiler

I know what you mean, but I actually rather liked series 8, and I appreciated the ‘ring composition’ nature of its final episode.
(If anybody doesn’t know this expression, they should go back to the first episode of the first series, and see what future each of the Stark children said that they wanted for themselves. Plus re-watch the first time that we see a meeting of of the ‘Small Council’ when Ned Stark is first made the new ‘Hand of the King’.)

Not only is ‘ring composition’ a traditional literary trope, but how better could they have ‘completed’ each of the characters’ vast story-arcs in the final episode of the final series? 🤷‍♂️

And remember this too - Winter is coming! (The Starks are always right, eventually) 😉

M

Winter is indeed coming. Another eternal truth (I even bought the poster while visiting the sites in Dubrovnik, Croatia) remains:

An Opus 88 pen to use a nib from a Stipula pen that the celluloid deteriorated and was useless. Another expensive pen is only good for trash.

A few days ago I realized the brushed steel cap and barrel of my old Sheaffer Prelude had corroded beyond useful life. I periodically go over this pen with silver polish to remove the furry oxidation, but this time I saw that this technique was no longer very effective. On the other hand, the two-tone steel nib is still like new, exceptionally smooth for a fine nib, and works well with my Franklin planner’s paper. So I looked on eBay and found an inexpensive “incandescent green” NOS Prelude and bought it to swap out the nib and use in place of my brushed steel model for everyday use. This is essentially a body transplant to preserve a brain.

Kindest regards, Robert Senner aka 65North

A Faber-Castell Hexo with F nib, even though I have low expectations of both the pen model and the wider-than-I-usually-like nib, just to have a Hexo in my personal library of pens and “know” its performance for myself.

A Sailor Shikiori Amaoto Suiu (or Summer Rain in the ‘Sound of Rain’ series), but not one of the three units offered at half-price by Bunbougu in the past 24 hours.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.
