What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

@AmandaW I’m also stuck in FOMO quicksand, despite a super abundance of pens in my collection. If you figure out how to extricate yourself let me know. I’ll be the one writing a bottomless wish list despite having a super abundance of pens, inks, and papers already at hand.

Osmiroid. i was looking for Easy Change nib units and saw a #65 set... then still ordered a few EC nibs as well. So now I will be looking for a more modern pen for the 65 nibs.

They're compatible with the Esterbrook J family of pens, so perhaps a modern Esterbrook cartridge pen with the Renew-Point adaptor?

Yes, the first generation of Osmiroid nibs were Renew Point compatible but the later Osmiroid Easy Change nibs, which are integrated with a section, are a totally different from and incompatible with the Renew Point system.

Actually, I have found a way that works well for me. It does not totally eliminate the buying urge AND, for me, it replaces the positive feeling of buying and receiving pens/paper/ink/etc. And sometimes feels even better!

What I do is, donate some/most/and occasionally all the money I would have spent on my pen hobby.

I sit down each month and write out small checks to different organizations, put them in addressed, stamped envelopes and mail them each week during the month mail them (sometimes several times during the week). The recipients include the local food pantry, the local public library, our local hospital and several (not to be named - not political or religious) other organizations. Most will send a thank you note and that really isn't necessary because I know what I did and just thinking about it feels good.

(For me it is important to actually sit down and write the checks and envelopes. Pushing a "donate" button on a website does NOT have the same effect - for me YMMV). Also, the recipient gets 100% of the money as PP usually takes about 2+% when you use them.

As I said above, for me, this generates a positive feeling which also helps me resist some of the impulse buying I used to do. Technically, I could still afford to buy many things if I REALLY wanted to do so, so it it isn't so much of a money issue.

One final thought... the donating action also has a residual/reverberation effect. If feels good whenever I think back on it.

Okay, just one more thing too.

As of the new year, I intend to start giving away much of my accumulated stuff - pens/paper/ink ... preferably on a local basis to anyone interested in handwriting, penmanship and pens/ink and paper.

Of course YMMV. So enjoy whatever you choose to do... or not do! Your choice is respected!

Added another order to my new Osmiroid habit: two more Faber Castell School pens, red and blue, to join the black I already have. With a small handful of Easy Change nibs on the way it makes sense to have a few handles as well. Thankfully inexpensive.

Will work for pens...

Talking about impulsive... I just bought the new Pelikan M600 Glauco Cambon although initially I didn´t have neither inclination nor intention to buy it.

But I was able to take a look at it at my favourite pen and paper shop, got the thoroughly disliked by me M nib swapped to a B, got a nice price (20 % Christmas discount from the shop and an € 180 Christmas voucher from my employer), went from "Well, I really don´t know" via "It does look a lot better in person than in the pictures" to "It´s the start of a new series that might get really good, do you want to miss the first one?" real quick and finally said "Well, okay, screw that B nib in there and let me throw my money at you."

Any news on how it writes, im looking for a writer so interested on how you are finding it ?

Not impressed. Looks like brass but feels like plastic. The nib, well to be honest, it seems like a standard nib with huge tipping is all. The nib does nothing. It is a smooth writer and very wet but not my type of pen so it will just be put away in the "Cheap pen" box.

Lesson learned!

Oh geez I already have one of those expensive pens I don’t love. I suppose the bar can always be raised!

Getting to know what you don’t love is as interesting as knowing what you do. I will say that if it’s nib related, nothing gives a blah pen new life like getting a nibmeister to grind it into something more suited to your hand. I have a pen that was ok, but this summer became a favorite because it went from a blah W. German ‘90s B to a IB and now I love it. It’s still a bit large for my everyday writing, but for calligraphy, signatures, and artwork it’s wonderful. Next year I may get a blah M ground finer, or also italicized, not sure yet.

Top 5 of 20 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Sailor x Daimaru Central Rockhopper Penguin PGS mini, Sailor Wonder Blue

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Parker “51” Desk pen EF, Sailor Manyo Konagi

Yiren Giraffe IEF, Pilot Yama-Guri/sky blue holographic mica

always looking for penguin fountain pens and stationery

Yes, thanks for the reminder AND you're late 😁!

I was surf some sights and saw a Sheaffer Icon which was selling for $108.00 on one sight. I didn't want to/ would not spend that much so I did a search and found one for $59.00 with free shipping. So jumped on that and another Sheaffer Star Wars (Luke Skywalker) pen for $10.00. The Skywalker will be a give away and the Icon, if it writes well, will be a keeper.

I suspect that long after the pen offers any specific enjoyment, reflecting back on the donations will provide considerably more satisfaction for me. If you want to, check back with me in a year or so and I will update you.

Thank YOU for the reminder and I wish you (and ALL0 a wonderful holiday season - ALL of THEM!

Not impressed

Hmm, does look a bit roller ball esq Stompie, thank you for the test page though, most excellent way of actually seeing the result, i do like a wet writer but probably because i like a fine nib, actually just tuned ( to some amateur degree ) a Fine Prelude that started life as a nail/needle, it is actually quite pleasant now and relatively quite and wet but like a lot of people, i am always on the hunt for that elusive... one, seems the Hong... thingy is probably not the ...one

The title of the thread is `impulsive Acquisition`

I will throw in a Caran D`ache Cisele for £40 English pounds... seemed rude not too

I was watching this on Flea Bay and the Mrs was explaining how the bidding process works... i bid, i won, which was a surprise as i expected to get outbid

Non the less i am very happy but i am not sure exactly what it is... Tony the seller was thinking a Crest, i thought Crest but from what he has found there are no exact matches, i looked at the list and found the same so at the moment it is a bit of a mystery

If your reading Tony, i hope you dont mind me using your image

I've started doing something similar. I've been gifting pens/paper/ink to people who I think will use it.

Crazy. Two Platinum #3776 Century pens, of the model fitted with Slip & Seal, which has the sharply defined step-down from barrel to grip section that I don't like (although it's not so bad to be absolutely intolerable any day all year round): Darth Vader and Darth Maul.

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Today I learnt that Wing Sung offers a vacumatic-filler 629; so now my latest impulsive pen acquisition is a vacumatic-filler Wing Sung 629.

A custom made replica of the Kaweco Supra, with Bock #6 titanium EF nib, milled out of a solid titanium stock.  This is a one of the kind pen custom ordered to replicate my own Kaweco, and to make it lighter.   The titanium version is almost as light as a plastic pen.

I love it.  It is small enough to fit trousers pocket and index cards of the same size are available in supermarkets and stationary shops.  Great for taking odd notes, jot down ideas and preparing for talks/presentations on the go.

I use it to also hold business cards or other scraps of paper I want to hold on for a while, like train tickets etc.  It is quite versatile.
