There I was at peace with the world, enjoying all my inks and pens, particularly the bunch I got last year when... A slightly beat up Platinum President turns up on the big bazaar style site at 50-75% discount... Weeeeell it's the one big Japanese company I haven't tied so why not? It's not like you're buying more pens...

 

Two days later, Omas Milord at a spectacular price. I just closed my eyes as I hit the buy button, I don't even know the nib size.

Define large or small.  I think this is the M710.

Of late I have seen several of these silver-on-black Toledos on here.

I find them to be very desirable, and I congratulate you on its acquisition 👍

Pelikan Toledo pens are some of the most enjoyable writing instruments. The hand engraving barrel cover is done in a traditional art, the nib responds well to almost any writer and the quality of the mechanical piston is great. Congratulations.

Are any of those things, aside from the barrel cover, different from any other Pelikan of a comparable model/size from the same era? These pens seem to come at a very high premium, which can be accounted for by scarcity and the attractiveness of the barrel cover, but I am wondering if there is more to it than that.

I have a 710 Toledo in red. I initially thought it might be too heavy but it is a nice weight.

I think that the barrel decoration is the only difference between a M710 and a M400, or between a M910 and M800.

 

The Maki-e & Raden models are, similarly, ‘just’ M800s/M1000s in ‘pretty’ barrels.

 

Ok, that’s clearly a crass over-simplification, in that the Toledo, Maki-e, and Raden pens are all exquisite products of exacting traditional crafts that require many, many hours of highly-skilled expert artisanal labour to create.

But, in terms of function and other components, I think that those pens are identical to the Souverän models on which they are based.
