What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

Recommended Posts

I happily report the arrival of the latest impulse purchase although I have hinted at it some days ago.

I was almost afraid to confirm it with a small chance it could yet fall through.

It is as good and better than I'd imagined when I succumbed to the impulse to Bid and Win the pen!!

I will refer esteemed readers to my earlier post of Van Dieman's Tiger Snake ink and Swan Snakeskin pen. That was my old pen...

This is the new arrival. a Swan, Mabie Todd, SM205/86 in all round better condition.

I hope you enjoy my pic today.

Asvine P30 …‹snip›… it's really too heavy for more than a quick note for me. Kinda disappointed.

I was using mine on the weekend, and I also found it tiring, but not so much because it's heavy overall (which the pen is), but because it is top-heavy, which forces me to keep the pen at an incident angle of ≥65°, in order to maintain control. That the EF nib on the Asvine P30 is very smooth — somewhat like the size 15 F nib on my Pilot Custom Enjyu — doesn't help in that regard. My ‘first love’ Rotring Initial fountain pens are likely at least as heavy, because in addition to long solid metal finials on torpedo shaped barrels, the main part of the barrel on the Initial is also metal (and not lightweight stuff like anodised alunimium, either). I should send you one of my three Initial fountain pens some time with which to have a go, just to see what you think of them.

It's on account of that I ordered (oops) three Asvine V126 pens yesterday; I like the brown see-through look (kinda like an Opus 88 Picnic in brown), but it's the frosted barrel on the white and the blue that are oh-so-enticing to me. (Oh, and I can no longer find the Majohn S7 eyedropper-filled pens with frosted barrels on AliExpress any more, so I can't buy the darker brown one.) If they're good, I'll probably ‘retire’ at least two of my three Wing Sung 699 pens that remain here.

How do you like writing with the Wing Sung 699, by the way? Or, for that matter, its filling mechanism?

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Oh, very much! An exceedingly nice pen, and gratified to see more vintage appearing here.

I bought a Geha piston filler with a 14k nib that was described as semi flexible. I liked the mid century look of it and after hearing so many nice things about them, took a chance on one.

Top 5 of 19 currently inked pens:

MontBlanc 144 IB, Herbin Orange Indien/ Wearingeul Frost

Sailor x Daimaru Central Rockhopper Penguin PGS mini, Sailor Wonder Blue

Parker 88 Place Vendôme IB, Diamine Golden Sands

Salz Peter Pan 18k gold filled filligree fine flex, Waterman Serenity Blue

Pilot Silvern Dragon IB, Iroshizuku Kiri-Same

I think I made the face that Tom Cat from Tom & Jerry makes when he sees the posh girl cat.  😻

I think I know the one @Penguincollector ..There is one cartoon cat whose heart throbs externally as well 😄 That's pretty cool!

But when I first saw this pen there was a distinct, "RoadRunner" moment! - twanging to a sudden stop like a plucked Banjo string"!

Thank you @Norfolk

I can't buy every pen so how can I become more selective?

In this case it represents a more focused purchase.

It struck me that this pen is a significant improvement on the one that has been a favourite for years. (with the added advantage that duplication offers re: parts etc).

Cheers, Tom

It feels pretty good in the hand and the nib is nicely smooth, a bit broader than I would expect for an EF, but that might be due to wetness of the Sailor 970 I put in it. That's not a criticism - I usually value smoothness over fine for an enjoyable writing experience. I will know more tomorrow as it will be taking a turn in my journal - a long effort on Clairefontaine paper.

It's certainly a handsome pen, the mix of black, silver, smoke and clear works for me. And that 'pop' when the ink rushes in was a surprise and delight - very satisfying.

Thankyou.

Will work for pens...

Scroll, scroll, scroll... BAM!! Caught sight of this cute Esterbrook "Petite Pak" with case and original box, and a quick question to the seller confirmed that the nib in another blurry picture is a 9788 Flexible Medium "Master Point". Hit that BIN button very quickly at that point.

Very nice!
I don't have any of the Pastels, or any of the "nurses" pens.  And I don't normally do sets, and a lot of my pens didn't have a box (and I THINK I already have an Estie with that nib).  But I like that sleeve that came with your set -- does it seem to be in good enough shape to use?

Couldn't help it. Bright Pink Rockster spotted on virtual pen show. It called.....

Bright Pink!  Pix when you get it?  I'm now very curious about what it looks like.

Yeah, I completely undertstand when pens "call".  Which is how I ended up getting the Lilac al-Star recently.  Someone posted a photo showing it, the regular "purple", and the Vibrant Pink one from a couple of years ago -- and it was JUST enough different a color from the Vibrant Pink for me to go, "Yeah -- I NEED that!" ).

Amazingly, I didn't see any pens at the Baltimore-Washington show that spoke to me that way.  Saw a lot of really cool pens (especially vintage ones) -- but a lot of time it was a combination of "No, I've budgeted for repairs on pens I already have..." and "Don't need another X -- especially in that color...".

Of course, the large blue Pelikan pen holder was a completely different issue....

I haven't even yet tried it to see what pens fit in the hole in its beak yet....  (Sadly, a small silver glaze one has eluded me -- saw one at someone's table but it wasn't for sale.... :crybaby:)

Someone came to my table, and asked if I was buying pens.  I said I was, and he showed me this.  It was my only actual purchase at the show.20230310_201425.thumb.jpg.48e971f8d19bc05b9026ce3dd1ad0155.jpg

Cool!  I don't think I've ever seen a box like that.  Of course most of my vintage pens came sans boxes....  I was just happy to find them at ALL.

I haven't received it in the mail yet, that was an auction photo. I have one similar set and the sleeve is still very useable. They are plastic/vinyl, and considering the age it still seems flexible and sort of soft, not brittle or ready to crack. I wouldn't put it to hard use but certainly ok for storing the set. Not something I would normally chase, but they are cute!

… broader than I would expect for an EF, …

I found that to be the case with the loose Wing Sung 32mm EF nibs I bought with the intent to fit on my other Wing Sung 699 pens as well. So, instead of actioning the replacement, I ended up just ‘tuning’ and regrinding the F nibs that came factory-fitted on those pens. But — and I'm not sure whether it's because of my choice of inks for them — ink doesn't seem to readily get past (around the edges of) the rubber plug on the end of the ‘piston’ well, even when the knob on the end of the barrel is not screwed into place such that the plug would isolate the feed from the ink reservoir.

A purple Lorelei 667 with an EF nib.

I went off searching for this pen because my oldest brother sometimes calls me Lorelei.  I only saw a purple demonstrator.  I kind of like the Jinhao 82 that looks so much like a Sailor PGS.

Yes it is a demonstrator with swirly purple ends and section. I saw also saw it with green and blue ends and a plain clear one, but liked the purple best. I think it will be a similar size to the Opus 88 Picnic, with the rounded ends, but with a clear middle bit and a piston filler. I am quite smitten with the how pretty they look. And was when I first saw them in 2021.

I’m going to sleep on the Lorelei pen. I’ll see if I still want to order it.
