Okay, so it's even weirder than that- certain critters have eyes that can only perceive color in parts of their eyes.  So we can't really conceive(or at least I can't) how a creature that views some things in black and white and others in colors of some sort interprets its surroundings.

👍

I’d guess that their subjective experience might be somewhat akin to ours when we are trying to read plain text on a website whose screen-space is dominated by lots of LARGE and BRIGHTLY-COLOURED animated FLASHING ADVERTS 🤷‍♂️

I just hope that the things that they perceive in colour on their monochromatic backgrounds convey actual useful information to them 😉

A lot of people don't seem to be aware of the nonsense they let slip through their teeth. This probably explains it.

I've thought about this for years, and the book touches on that as well.

But I digress...

Thanks for the digression. And let me add...

Keep in mind (no pun intended) that the brain and the process of sensing (sight, sound, etc.) in not, or so I understand it, a binary (yes/no) issue. There is usually a continuum/varying degree of perception ability. In addition, the brain possesses a degree of plasticity and adaptability beyond what was long believe to be the case.

For example, based on what I have read in several sources, people who are blind can experience sight by using an electrical/electronic device placed on the tongue. Yes, I know that sounds amazing, at least to me. One source for that information is a book called, "The Brains Way of Healing" by Norman Doige, M.D. (c) 2013 (I think). Also I saw, but did not read, an article with the similar headline and a diagram of the actual device. The source for that may have been the New York Times, although I am unsure.

The concept of neuro-plasticity - (online definition: the ability of the brain to form and reorganize synaptic connections, especially in response to learning or experience or following injury) is one I find quite fascinating even to contemplate.

IMHO, we truly do not know the actual capabilities of this "thing" we call the brain!

“Don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today, because if you do it today and like it, you can do again tomorrow!”

That sounds fascinating (makes me think of the blind character Geordie on Star Trek: Next Generation, who wore that thing around his head wired into his brain to be able to "see".

A friend of my brother's growing up was blind (not since birth, but I think as a toddler from some sort of illness) and his brain compensated by giving him exceptional hearing (such as being able to discern when IIRC a film strip being shown in class was having problems -- he could apparently hear the higher frequencies of the electronics).

A TWSBI Eco in cerulean blue with 1.1mm stub nib. I need to stop looking at what pens other people use. Aaugh! I never learn. Blue was a hole in my TWSBI Ecos is my justification.

You post like this is a thread about recent pen acquisitions, what is wrong with you? 😁

I hear you - it is really difficult to see big swatches of pens go by and not want to pick and choose new ones. I sometimes think about culling my IG and FB feeds to slim down the number of pen collectors I follow to reduce temptation/consideration, but then I just try to be grown-up (not easy for me!) and enjoy other people's treasures vicariously.

@JonSzanto Sometimes it’s easy to resist the gorgeous pens posted on the Leonardo thread because I think I’m past my $300+ pen buying. So I resist. Yet… if I buy several pens over the year, I’ve spent as much as higher dollar pens.

I do have one Leonardo I got on Pen Chalet from their Final Drop area. These are slightly used and returned pens, that are discounted.

I suppose it comes down to knowing your budget, and deciding if you want one (or two) pen or several pens. If I went the one pen route, I suspect it would be another Edison.

Purchased on impulse from Amazon. Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze M  Power Filler 47.5 gms (with a fill). The new in-house Visconti nib. Very wary as I've read so much about their QC but arrived perfectly tuned. Smooth right out of the box.

I bought an Ohto Rays flash dry gel pen for the times I need a gel. Didn't plan on it, but it sure is a nice pen!

This arrived in yesterday's mail

It has the words INK TRAP on the top of the cap, and a transplanted Waterman 14k nib.

Writes very nicely. Haven't had a chance to use it much yet though. Currently inked with Waterman Serenity Blue for a first fill.

The celluloid is more red in real life than this photo shows.

Perhaps the 'oddball' pens at prices low enough that its no big deal if the pen turns out to be trash are my most impulsive purchases.

This one is on its way to me now. I have no idea what it is but it sure looks interesting, especially the nib, of course, which becomes part of the grip. The clip looks to be pretty trashed and the cap a bit rough. Nothing matches with obvious Google searches. The nib says "Trust" in cursive then "DeLuxe", then "PAT". There's something imprinted on the filler sheaf but I can't make it out. I vaguely recall seeing a filler like that, perhaps on a Chinese pen.

Does anyone recognize it?

Honestly not a pen I ever thought I'd purchase or like. But when the stars aligned with a favourable price on Amazon I thought I'd give it a go. Having held one and used it for a little while now, it's completely unique and it has become my go-to pen. Who would have thought? We live and learn :)

If the fountain pen is made in China, it is unique. Usually there would be some sort of engraving on the cap, clip, or sack guard that would indicate the maker or brand. The filler vaguely resembles a kin sin but could be as different as the nationality of the pen.

Anyway, it looks cool. Please show us more when you get them.

Hope it will be a good collection.

I was incorrect. The nib (and the filler) don't say "Trust" - they say "Crest" with a stylized "C". There's a thread about "Crest" here that seems like it might be Japanese but not clear for all the pens mentioned in that thread, but the initial pen has the same cursive "Crest" logo.

Macro pic of the nib on mine - the filler has the same "Crest" logo:

Some older Pelikans, a Pelikan IBIS 130 & early production 140. The sale was for that IBIS only but the seller also tossed in that 140 as an extra as it was not functional... well, it is functional now. ;)

I took a look at your pics. The IBIS nib is spectacular! And the 140: SCORE!

Platinum model PTS-50000 Pin Stripe Sterling Silver fountain pen with an F nib.

They seem rarely available on Amazon (in .jp and other TLDs), and for some reason I got it into my head that it’s a discontinued model (when it actually isn’t, at the moment), given how many relatively high-end Platinum models (#3776 Briar Shell, #3776 Briar, #3776 Marbled Ebonite, etc.) were discontinued since 2020.

That was my first misconception.

A few years ago, I was looking into getting the more expensive Platinum Hammered Antique Sterling Silver fountain pen, which is what I really wanted, but was told (correctly) by sellers that the narrowest width grade offered for it was M, and that was a deal-breaker for me. Lengthwise striated lines in sunk relief is not a ‘guilloche’ pattern I find enticing, so its cheaper, shiny silver sibling didn’t get a look in, back in the day. It passed beneath my notice that the latter is, in fact, optionally offered with an F nib.

That was my second misconception.

So, when earlier tonight I saw a listing (sold by Amazon JP) for a unit that is fitted with an F nib, it made me jump. (Last time Amazon JP listed a unit, which became unavailable shortly after, was fitted with an M nib.) Furthermore, the asking price was favourable even assuming an MSRP of ¥50,000+tax — as implied by the numeric component of the model number — and ignoring that Platinum raised all its retail prices as of 1 January 2023, which would be irrelevant if it was.a discontinued model. (Alas, it is a current model, and the current MSRP is ¥65,000+10% tax.)

With only a single unit being available to order — even though the listing did not explicitly state that at the time, I found out by mistake going back and forth in my browser, and ended up getting an error message stating only 1 unit is available to be put in my shopping cart — and the estimated delivery date is late in April, I uncharacteristically hit the Buy Now button.

Ah well. There’s plenty of time for me to change my mind and cancel the order…

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Finally pulled the trigger on a Montblanc Slimline blue. Didn't really want a new pen, but just couldn't resist.
