I think it is an M400 it is West Germany with an 18c nib.  Once I have it in hand, I'll let you know.

The 2 Hastils arrived and neither is very exciting. The Marco Polo set is pretty but bland - meh. The sterling Ciselle sparkles as the teeny tiny squares catch the light, yet the pattern leaves me cold.

So I went searching again, ostensibly for a bog standard smooth stainless steel, and ended up with a matte black/gold trim - what a looker! - and a slim  Sheaffer Targa with inlaid nib, in matte black/chrome trim (new in the box, converter included) to keep it company.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

I think you are mistaken, I think it is closer to $700 and it is this one.

I was just about to say that the prices vary WIDELY depending on which maki-e pen it is, because of the different techniques used. There are some good threads about this and comparisons of Namiki, Nakaya and King of Pens here on the forum. I did a bit of research when looking at buying a secondhand one, not knowing anything at all about them. The Nippon Art series (which mine also is) are at the lower end of the Namiki range, with some suggesting that this is because they are not *entirely* hand painted. Still, a Nippon Art currently sells for over €500 retail here (incl local sales tax) with some series going over €600 (don’t recall which, but it’s clear on the Pilot website). I paid a little over €350 for one that had been owned for about a year and was clearly barely used, complete with the wooden box.

@amberleadavis Very nice of your kiddo to get you that beautiful pen. Which proves my point about an eBay coupon for Mother’s Day. I tried to apply it to a fountain pen, and it didn’t work. But it would work on a handbag. My point is does a woman really want someone else to choose her next handbag?

Didn't see that one. The ones I did see were in the lower range, around $290/$300. Guess I will have to wait for the pen show and see what it brings. Also, I will have send the seller a bit more money...

Thank you for the additional information.

Great pen!  Congrats.   I have a BB gathering dust.  Too wide for me.  Maybe one day an OM will appear.

Add lightness and simplicate.

This is the first time I've seen someone score a sumgai deal and actively take steps to intentionally ruin it. Lol.

Bummer about being bored, but we look forward to seeing them anyway.

A few years ago, he got me an S. T. Dupont Olympio he found on Offer Up for $200.  What a score!  I think he over paid on this one, but I love it.  He told me he was upset because the coupon didn't work and I totally agree, I don't want someone else buying my purse!  But then, the kid said it was easier to pick out a purse for me than a pen because I cared more about the pen.  :)

Montblanc 14. I've always wanted a butterfly nib Montblanc. There are so many choices but I figured I should start with the original.

Was it the original? I have no idea of how or when these pens developed, and which model came when. Is there a reference somewhere about that? I have a 22, a 24 and a 74 along the same vein, as well as others with open nibs from about the same era (I think). They all seem to be excellent as received, I've never had to re-do anything.

I don't have the books on Montblanc, but the online summary seems good enough:

I don't know of course but based on my limited research, yes.

Thank you. An OM or OB would be quite nice.

If for no other reason than otherwise they may give all your pens to the local thrift store when they are cleaning out your stuff.  EEK
