What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

Solar-powered hot air blower that someone doesn't dry skin out unduly, perhaps?

How far from pens and acquisitions of such can we go here, before the thread is shut down or drives itself into oblivion up someone's wazoo?

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

Good question.  🤔

Is that the decorated one with the little brush?  I tried one that was pretty and different, but gave it away as it didn't suit me. Mine was quite inexpensive.

I indeed ordered one of the many alternatives of such desk pens, an inexpensive one (<15€). This is the Platinum Carbon Desk Pen I got from Penshop Nijmegen in the Netherlands, with an EF steel nib.

I've gone full circle with this pen. I've gotten into fountain pens because of several wonderful articles written by several wonderful artists. I've spent hours trying to understand what Liz Steel, Tina Koyama, Jane Blundell, Teoh Yi Chie "Parka", and Ana at the Well Appointed Desk were talking about. I wanted to try out fountain pens again.

The Lamy Joy with a stub 1.5 mm nib and the Sailor Fude DE Mannen were my first fountain pens after a 30-year hiatus; Pilot Iroshizuku Fuyu-gaki and Tsuki-yo were my first new inks. They were nothing like what I've experienced as a kid, in school. They're also not what one would recommend as starter pens here, on FPN. But they are great for starting your sketching adventure, and findable and affordable.

Since then, I've tried and tested quite a few more pens and inks, joined FPN, and developed a small collection of (relatively) inexpensive, Japanese pocket fountain-pens. After trying out quite a few makers and brands, it was time to return to trying out the pens on my original list.

Hopefully this was not too long an answer, @essayfaire

Many models of add-on bidet come with a built-in blow dryer. Or you can use toilet paper (which is what I do) but you end up using very much less than you would without the bidet.

I've often wondered, since I live in a land of semi-perpetual drought, whether the use of water to cleanse myself is ecologically sound. I gather that the production process of toilet paper also involves the use of a lot of water, but perhaps it is made in areas that are not in a state of drought. All things considered, perhaps we should adopt the preferred method of Rabelais' Gargantua, and use the neck of a goose that is well-downed.

A hand towel will suffice, and is washable.  You're only drying after all, much like you would after a shower.

WTH with the bidets? C'mon, people.

It is not; the pen you have is different than the one I had tried.

Tsuki-yo is an ink I keep permanently paired in one of my favorite pens, a Pilot Blue Carbonesque Capless with a F nib.  So I think it sounds like you're on a good track! ;)

I use soap in the shower. I actually exit *clean*.

I will, but it hasn't come yet.  It just got to the Columbia, MD post office yesterday, so I'm not really expecting it till later in the week.

We'll see how I like it -- I tried someone's architect nib at a pen club meeting a couple of years ago and didn't like it (the pen owner loved it).

Well, the nib and the two bottles of ink came yesterday.  I swapped it in for the M nib that was on the Azure al-Star, and then flushed the pen just to make sure that there aren't any manufacturing oils.  Now trying to decide what to ink the pen up with to try the nib out.

OH gee, let's get back on track.

How about a pen bidet?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

Well, I don't actually have a lot of KWZI blue inks except for some of the IG inks.  I apparently have a sample of one of the standard blues (and also a sample of standard Turquoise) but not sure which number -- or where it is at the moment (I really need to reorganize the sample vial trays... ).

I just bumped into an excellent analysis of desk pens from Pilot / Platinum / Sailor, done by @A Smug Dill in at least two occasions:

  1. When testing the Diamine Sherwood (green) ink
  2. When discussing with @LizEF about ink reviews focusing on EF nibs

Others in these threads also give excellent technical detail. Thanks, @A Smug Dill, @LizEF, FPN!

Thank you! It’s a little penguin, I love it (although I would if it was a Pelikan too)!

After watching upteen videos, ordered the TWSBI mini, with Noodler's Blue/Black.  That was not impulsive, but added a glass pen on a whim... just 'cause I've wanted one for a few years, back when I bought an oblique and box of nibs.

I recently realized my penmanship needed some refresher work.  Granted, I was trying to write with a Dollar Store ball-point.   Good grief, that thing sucks!  and, I couldn't read a word of my own script.   So, I dug out a few old fountain pens.   The Jinhao (I think I bought it for $4) worked the best, and a Pilot came in second (probably needs a better cleaning).   I didn't bother with the vintage Esterbrook, and the Ahab was so stinky (even after all this time) that I threw it away (should I dig it out of the trash and save the nib?).

Also ordered some more Clairefounaine Seyes ruled.   I have a pad of cheap stuff, but it doesn't work with pens.   Really wit\sh CF would offer their Seyes in a cream or dull tint to be easier on the eyes.   I find bright white to be a bit harsh to stare at.   Can't wait for this order to arrive!  In the meantime, am coursing through Sull's Art of Cursive Penmanship.

Agreed.  If I look elsewhere it's because someone here suggested it.
