A few pens ago I promised myself this was it for 2021 then.

Hahahaha!!!  I've come to the conclusion that I need to avoid the declaration that this is my last pen.  When I do that, there is a pause followed by a small deluge of pens.

I have a Pilot Justus on the way.  I also just got a Schon DSGN pocket pen.

Sounds a lot like the yo-yo dieting phenomenon. ;)

For me it's a TWSBI Vac 700-R, with an F nib in the really beautiful looking "Iris" finish.  Got the new e-ad from Anderson Pens, who just got them (back?) in stock and jumped on it before they disappeared again.  I was waffling over the price (since it's more expensive than the "standard" colors) and then my husband said "Merry Christmas!"

Also ordered a bottle of Kobe Taisanji Yellow while I was at it, because that ink did well in the Sailor 1911S Wicked Witch pen with the super-wet "music" nib.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

That's what I said in October.  Since then, an impulse Kaweco Special was added to the flock, and an Onoto special edition should arrive shortly before Christmas.

The lusted for Conway Stewart will wait until closer to my birthday it 2022.

So that's what did it.

I thought it was the new set of pen drawers my husband is making for me as a Christmas gift.  I thought I'd never fill the last set. He calls it "being realistic".

Will work for pens...

And the Montblanc 24 arrived today, a much more understated pen, made for writing, which it does very well.

I posted recently about finding my latest gem, a Montblanc No.24 from local 2nd hand goods store.

Impulse?! There was no way of resisting that!

I haven't tried MB Oyster in it yet but very happy with Edelstein Moonstone. Understated? Yes it is but a very capable instrument nonetheless.

It has been my daily writer since arriving.

Last night I spent the rent money on a replacement cap!

No worries! I can always curl up and sleep under my pen box!

That's what I said in August. It lasted not even six weeks. Now, another dozen pens later…

I've just ordered the Majohn A1 (with clip!) that I added to my family's shared-access Christmas gift exchange (because that's what it is) wishlist that nobody put their hand up for giving, probably because there was little chance it would physically arrive by Christmas.

But then, while they all complain that I'm difficult to buy presents for — because I tend to impulse-buy everything I want when I see the items offered at decent limited-time-only discounts, and wouldn't want anyone to buy those things for me if I'm not prepared to bite at full price — they don't like my suggestions either. My printer is complaining that the toner is running low, and it uses the same type of cartridge as the two printers my parents-in-law have, so I asked for a (generic/unbranded) replacement toner cartridge, of which I know they have spares they recently bought. ”That's not a proper present!” My desk lamp just died last week, so I put in a request for a replacement, complete with links to multiple acceptable candidates on Amazon; a $23.99 (after applicable discounts at the time) one would do me. ”That's too cheap!” Something on AliExpress that I haven't bought yet, even though it's on my list of things to get, but just waiting for a ~10% discount even if I can live with (someone else) forgoing that little bit of saving? ”That is too hard, we don't have AliExpress accounts, and it takes too long or has too much uncertainty when it's sent from China by whichever untracked method the seller could choose to use as ‘standard’ shipping!”

I endeavour to be frank and truthful in what I write, show or otherwise present, when I relate my first-hand experiences that are not independently verifiable; and link to third-party content where I can, when I make a claim or refute a statement of fact in a thread. If there is something you can verify for yourself, I entreat you to do so, and judge for yourself what is right, correct, and valid. I may be wrong, and my position or say-so is no more authoritative and carries no more weight than anyone else's here.

There’s no doubting your husband’s support.  Where’s the ‘green with envy’ emoticon????

I use Extra Fine nibs (and sometimes “Japanese Fine” and Medium-Fine nibs) to produce writing in Latin-based alphabets at x-height of ≲2.5mm, and Chinese hanzi or Japanese kanji in a 5mm (line, dot, or virtual) grid. I expect by default that EF nibs of any make — especially brands that don't offer UEF, EEF or XXF width grades — would allow me to do that, without the counter spaces (e.g. in lowercase ‘e‘ and ‘o’) getting closed up, or what should be distinct (and often parallel) lines inevitably fusing with each other. If a nib is flexible, I expect I would get some line variation when writing at that scale.

The Scribo FEEL's 14K gold flexible EF nib is entirely unsuitable for that purpose. If I wanted to (be forced to) write in English to fit 8mm–10mm tall ruled lines, I'd use a Fine, Medium-Fine or even broader nib.

That's pretty small writing, I assume the Scribo nib is not fine enough to start for you and being flex it further widens the line.

I'd never get to write that small, also due to my eyesight certainly not improving...

Just out of curiosity, have you experienced other European nibs with comparable flex, that nonetheless allow you to achieve lowercase vowels not getting closed up? It might be interesting to point them out (I was thinking Aurora but I assume their EF is not as flex as the Scribo). Thanks.

So I've hinted quite a bit about just such a pen for Christmas.  We'll see how it goes.  In the meantime I am refraining from other purchases.

Just ordered a Lantibou 3088 F in brown.  If it turns out I like how it fits my hand, I'll go ahead at some point in the next few months and order the seemingly unattractive Platinum Curidas. If I don't, I'm only out $10 and I will give it to my son for physics lab.

Nope. Not as in all European (expressly) flexible nibs fail at that, but that I don't go that far (or often) out of my way to buy and try them, when flex isn't really that important or even desirable in either the writing experience or handwriting outcomes in my book. Where 'flex' or softness in a nib is desired - if only for curiosity - then (relatively plain-looking) Japanese pens would be the first place I look for it, even if the pen is to be put to use writing in English.

So, no, I won't be spending money trying out flex nibs from Aurora, Santini, Pineider, Montblanc, etc. I only got the Scribo because I was ‘owed’ a pen (or a refund) after a particularly disagreeable transaction involving a Leonardo pen, and the retailer offered to give me a very significant discount on whichever Italian pen I wanted to make it up to me. I don't trust Visconti's QC enough, and I already have too many Aurora pens (and the Black Mamba I wanted was sold out by then, although the then-upcoming Blue Mamba was offered to me for the same discounted ‘clearance’ price); Scribo was not a brand I would otherwise consider getting for the price premium I don't feel is justified, but since I was given such a large discount, I thought, ”Why not?”

Have been thinking about Pelikan for months now and yesterday rather impulsively took the plunge (pun intended) with a black M1000 with a Fine nib. Now if only I knew how to drive this thing 🤣

So, yeah, I bought the 1992 Green/Blue Optima from Valentina, the one that piqued my interest in Optimas in the first place. NOS, never used, with box and papers. Should be here in January, going by the month it took the Ferrari to get here.

^^ Great M1000, Chimera01, grats! You may have to apply for a learner's permit. ;)

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Some days ago I bought a Montblanc 232 (round blah M nib, but juicy, oh my!) on a whim. Turns out the seller got it from penboard.de in spring and did not like the soft nib. I had been eyeing this very pen back then but hesitated for too long, fortunately, because his asking price was way below what Tom Westerich would have asked even from me, so ... I got the pen yesterday and ruthlessly turned the round medium nib into a flatter stub without making the line wider. Now I have this pen www.penboard.de... with a lovely nib, generous ink flow, huge capacity and in overall great condition, considering its age and the fact that I will not use it as a showpiece but as a daily writer.

Just bought another Lamy 2000, this one with an extra fine nib. I have owned maybe 6 or 7 over the years, and always end up selling them for one reason or another. This pen has a sneaky way of working its way back into my mind as a pen that I actually like, primarily because the form factor is quite good for my intended purpose as a note taking pen for court--low profile design, reliable piston filler, hooded nib. The balance is a bit too front weighted for my liking, but this time around I'm going to try to use it posted more often. We'll see how it goes...

My last pen purchase was in June of this year, which was also my first pen purchase in years. I picked up a Moonman N6 in iris blue swirl with interchangeable glass dip nib and a fountain pen nib + converter, plus a bottle of J. Herbin Violette Pensée ink. I have yet to take the pen for a proper test drive, but I hope to soon; the writing itch is coming back from a long slumber.
