What Was Your Last Impulsive Pen Acquisition?

I fell off the wagon (or did I jump off?) three weeks ago. I hadn't bought a pen in over three years and thought I had enough pens. And I do have enough pens. But there was this cute, green P45 with a medium gold nib at a flea market, all grimy and hot and unloved in a display case. The seller was asking $5 for it. He took $3. An hour's soak removed the dried washable green ink from the innards and it proved to be a superb writer. The tines were perfectly aligned and everything. Now I have three P45s: F, M, and B and am back on the wagon.

 

Geez!! Why can't that kind of thing happen to me????? Ugh...

 

My last impulse buy was a TWSBI Mini Classic. Hadn't been looking at them really, and was planning to wait for the Vac Mini, but who knows when that'll happen...anyway, wanted a 1.1 or 1.5 nib and the interchangeable nibs of the Mini sealed the deal, so I bought it.

Earlier this week; bought a Platinum Plaisir (for $12) and a Preppy alongside a converter for my new 3776 I received in the mail yesterday. Since I'm still relatively new to the fp hobby acquisition mode is in full swing.

$12 new??? Currently in a standoff with my Plaisir, I'd like to use it, but it's become a game of taking it out and checking to see if immediately writes a smooth fluid line > after nearly 3ish years. The cap Does do amazingly exactly what Platinum states.

Faber Castell Ambition Rhombus with a B nib - marked as a Faber Castell something else... It was one of those Auctions that didn't have a lot of action and I came in under the wire and stole it for $30 or so... I always wanted one of those but not in the Rhombus finish, but a B nib was too much to pass up on.

And me, in my paring-down phase, how was that possible?

 

The pen was nice enough, but I knew I wouldn't write with it. Why? Cos paring down! Paring down to the pens I knew I would use!

 

So, sold it at a slight loss. I try to remember the Delta Vintage when the pen lust tries to blind me. "Will I use it? No, seriously, will I use it?" I ask myself, "Or will I sell it at a loss?" That usually works -- or has been working since.

Once I had five pens everything feels like an impulse buy. And though I have five gorgeous pens, after months of deliberation and saying no, I finally broke down and bought a Twsbi mini, because how could I stop buying pens if I hadn't tried a Twsbi?

 

Yes! I have been at that phase, too, the "how can I stop buying pens if I haven't tried this one?" The sense makes itself!

I'm still in the mode of "I'm not done buying pens cos I don't have X" myself, where X includes a BHR full ebonite pen, a button filler, something to hold my 0.8mm Nemosine stub nib, and a Nemosine demonstrator with the 0.6mm stub.

But impulsive? It's been decades since that happened. I found an A&W Sizzle Stix in Kmart, when all I had was a C/C Osmiroid with a ball-tipped nib. Since I got my first Levenger catalog, I am fairly sure I've always spent weeks, if not months, of contemplation prior to making a purchase.

But I've been the beneficiary of impulsive purchases. My wife bought me a 10 pack of Hero 616s cos she was worried the Ahabs she'd ordered to give me for our anniversary wouldn't arrive in time. I may grind some of those into narrow stubs.

Yes, they write quite well, all the Sheaffer school pens. the Cadets, the translucent cartridge pens, all of them. I sometimes wonder why spend any more money. If we have it to spend, we will spend it on things that make us feel good.

If I pare down to only the pens I would like to write with, I will have at least a hundred. If I pare down to all the fountain pens I will use, I will have perhaps four. Adding the pens that have some sentimental connection, there will be six. I know that this is absolutely impossible.

 

I tried to write a sales ad today to dump three, a Montblanc 146, an Esterbrook J with a 2312 italic nib and a Waterman Carene. I will have to try again tomorrow.

At least these days my impulsive purchases are of dip pen nibs which are significantly cheaper than fountain pens. I broke down and bought the last set of Hunt #56 school pens an ebay seller was selling off. I had already bought three other of his sets of #56's. And while I was at it I threw in a couple of sets of Hunt #100 artist pens and a set of #69 All Round since I've never seen one of those. Altogether it was $19 including shipping for 25 nibs.

 

That's it. I'm not even looking. Don't want to even know... Wait, is that an unopened box of Blanzy-Poure 2552's??? Uh, no. no. I'm not even looking.

My last real impulse buy was a Platinum Preppy 0,2, so it wasn't a too dangerous situation. But now a friend is selling a Pelikan M425 with an extra EF nib unit for a little more than $100. So that's going to be mine

Not planned, not the best timing either, but I can't miss this!

I was planning on ordering a bottle of Scabiosa to try it out and needed to pick up a bottle of Diamine Sherwood Green since I loved the sample I had. Then I decided to live dangerously and browse to see what was new on the Goulet site. Now I've got a TWSBI Eco in black with a broad nib. I've been meaning to try a TWSBI for a long time but remained hesitant due to the cracking issues, but I figured I'd take the chance since the Eco is only a few dollars more than a new Metropolitan.

 

I've been enjoying it so far, and will keep hoping that I don't have any problems. Right now it's inked up with Scabiosa and running real smoothly.
