Advice Wanted About Modern Fountain Pen Flex Nib

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a vintage Waterman with flex, also purchased several Noodler´s with flex. Now I am looking for a modern fountain pen with flex nib (more reliable than Noodler's ;).
I have been asking around and many fountain pen-lovers recommend Omas, 14 karat Extra Flexible nib. This sure is a fine pen, but a bit expensive. Does anyone know of and can recommend a modern fountain pen with flex nib that is not that expensive?
best regards

I agree with you.

I think they are also semiflex at best, but Pilot flex pens are very picky about the ink. If you don't use well-flowing inks you'll experience railroading way too often to make for an enjoyable writing experience.

Pilot pens are intended for Japanese characters, thus they have no need for the great ink flow that western scripts demand

Not a modern pen, but the Pelikan 140 is a great semi-flex option if you're interested. Price ranges usually around $110. Not too expensive and has decent line variation.fpn_1439833309__img_1710.jpg

I can recommend Parker Quink ink and enlarging the distance between the tines just a bit.

Semiflex would probably be a more accurate term when it comes to modern pens.

What about Namiki/Pilot Falcon?

The Falcon is a fun pen, I would consider it semi-flex but definitely be careful about springing it. It's one of my favorite modern pens.

I just got a falcon yesterday. I bought a medium because I know that Japanese nibs are a bit finer. I read somewhere that someone recommended getting a fine falcon to really see the line variation, but I didn't listen. I am a bit disappointed with the medium as the flex does not show that great of a difference. I'm going to continue to play with it. It's a great pen, but the medium is not as "WOW" as I wanted.

In terms of Pilot Pens and semi-flex/flex nibs, the Pilot Falcon tends to me more on the semi-flex side. It's more of a soft nib than a flex nib honestly.

The pen/nib that I've used thats closest to a vintage flex is a Pilot Custom Heritage 912 with an FA nib. Any Pilot pens that can take an FA nib works, though there is flow issues with the 742/743. The 912 works pretty good. Some people have flow issues too, but using a cartridge with it seems to solve the problems. There is a store in Japan that has Pilot Custom 823 with an FA nib which it doesn't come with normally.

Those who hurt me were not only someone else,

but also those who pretended not to notice. It was my friend.
