BoyBacon...you sent me scurrying off to Wikipedia to research Mulberry Trees. Apparently there are three varieties...White, found in Eastern Asia and Europe, Black, found in Western Asia and Europe and Red, found on east coast of America.

How about DeAtrementis American Mulberry or Atlantic Mulberry? You really are pretty spot on with the color (photos attached).

Looking at these mulberries the name woudbe fitting... But if they are ripe they are almost black

There are several explanations how that color might have gotten its ... disturbing name. The most plausible might be that an iron oxide of that color was considered a worthless residue by medieval alchimists, which they designated in their notes with a skull (a "dead end", so to speak). I think that specific iron oxide still constitutes the artists pigment which goes by that name.

Of course - as noted in some posts before - the color might simple have reminded someone of old blood ...

This is so much fun! O.K. - I have another for you, in celebration of the upcoming season:

YULE LOG

It incorporates the beautiful brown hues complemented with warm red hues. Who doesn't love German or Swiss chocolate with all of that lushious cake?

The flower names made me think of another possibility: Tuscany Rose (it's an heirloom Gallica that is a dark purply-red).

This has been a fun thread to participate in. But I'm with Amber -- I'm now *starving* (it's lunchtime, but the kitchen floor is still wet from the cleaning lady mopping it...).

I am here in Northern Iowa at the time of corn harvest. There are many structures on the farms here that have this same deep maroon/brown shade, and are called "the red barn". Perhaps another name to be considered would be "Weathered Red Barn".

Unfortunately my two entries didn't make it to the list, or were forgotten.

1. Lucanus maculifemoratus taiwanus (female), could be nice to have an insect series anyway, and;

2. Bloodcrusts, this name will most likely not be a good selling point, and the picture on the label can't look as exciting as other labels by de Atramentis.

Good luck to the other participants

  • 3 weeks later...

I love to cook. Tonight I made a Moroccan Tagine. It made me think of Casablanca. Perhaps Casablanca might be an evocative name for you to consider.

Lots of good suggestions. I don't envy Doctor J having to choose just one for the ink re-name....
