Recommended Posts

I didn't check my previous answers. Once I write today's choices I'll see if Imm still faithful to inks mentioned earleir. Here we go (today only, that's such a fun thread):

Black: still none

Blue: Lidth's Jay, Kingdomn Note if only I had a bottle, because I don't own one my choice will go for Azure 5, KWZI

Blue/Black: Bleu Nuit, J. Herbin

Brown: Lie de The, J. Herbin

Green, Lierre Sauvage, J. Herbin

Grey: Infinite Grey, Caran d'Ache

Orange: Pumpkin, Diamine

Pink: none

Purple: Sommerlila, Kaweco

Red: if only I had a bottle it would be Marazuzen's Akane but as it's unonbtainable my vote goes for Oku-Yama, Sailor

Turquoise: still none although I'm testing Aquamarine Blue (penman ink) sample I've received from Cybaea and I must admit the shading and color vibrancy are impressive

Violet: Tender Purple, Waterman

Now, Vis, I admit, I adore this ink: Marazuzen's Akane, and like you, I only tried a sample. It is scrumptious. I would have to say that Red Cashmere has it beat for sheen and shade, but it too in unobtainium.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I'm having trouble with the difference between 'inks I'd like to have with me on a trip' and 'my favourite representation of each colour'.

Traveling is easy, my kaweco Al sport with a handful of carts tossed in my purse, my Twsbi 580 cranked to the max with some variety of saturated blue and my Pilot VP extra fine filled with R&K Salix for filling out tourist visas. I always tell myself that I will do so much writing on vacation but I rarely ever do. Not to the extent that I would need a sample vial full of grey, of brown, of green, etc..

But if the question becomes 'favourite representations from each colour family' then my list would be as follows:

Black -J. Herbin Perle Noir

Blue-Black - Pelikan 4001 blue black

Grey -Organic Studios Arsenic

Brown- Stipula Sepia

Green- R&K Alt Goldgrun

Purple- Iroshizuku Yama Budo

Red- Diamine Red Dragon

Burgundy -Sailor Jentle Oku Yama

Pink -Iroshizuku Momiji

Orange - Diamine Autumn Oak

Yellow- Nah

And then blue...

Okay, this is tricky but blue is my favourite and I have at least 6 top inks in this catagory. Maybe more if I stretch it to blue-green or purple-blue. I would consider these to be essential to any collection of ink for Blues lovers. In no particular order they are Sailor Jentle Sky High/iroshizuku Kon Peki, Sailor Jentle Nioi Sumire, Diamine Majestic Blue, PR Electric DC Blue, Diamine Midnight, and Diamine Bilberry.

My favourite list of Blues, Purples, and Reds continue to evolve. I pretty much picked Arsenic Grey back in the day and then left it alone because I rarely bother with grey. Same with brown, green, black..

How about you guys? If your collection is expanding, what direction is it moving in?

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

Hey guys!

I'm the originator of the thread, so I would like to give you a little update.

I'm in the final days of getting everything ready in the motorhome. So, right now I have to make the final, critical decisions - which pens and which ink.

Another critical piece of information is that I will be gone until late December, so basically 3 months.

So, here goes. I've paired it down to 6 bottles and 4 L'Artisan Pastelier Callifolio samples I just received from Ink by the ML! These are my final choices:

Black: None

Blue: Sailor Nioi-sumire

Purple: DeAtramentis Pearl Violet

Green: Rohrer & Klingner Verdura

Turquoise: Waterman South Seas, L'Artisan Pastelier Callifolio Bleu Pacifique

Brown: L'Artisan Pastelier Callifolio Yalumba

Orange: Lamy Orange

Red/Pink/Burgundy: Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Bordeaux, L'Artisan Pastelier Callifolio Andrinople, and L'Artisan Pastelier Callifolio Carmin

Now, as to pens:

1). Delta Horsepower with stub nib

2). Bexley Elegancia with medium nib

3). Delta Marina with broad nib

4). Lamy Safari with fine nib

5). Lamy Al-star with stub nib

6). Pilot Vanishing Point with fine nib

7). Lamy Studio with fine nib

. . . ah, heck, I might just take all of them, pens, inks, papers and all.

I CAN'T CHOOSE!!!!!!

I have finished my packing of pens and ink. So this is the ink I packed:

Black: None

Blue: Sailor Nioi-Sumire, DeAtramentis Steel Blue, Lamy Blue, Pilot Iro Asa Gao, Pilot Iro Shin Kai

Purpple: Rohrer & Klingner Cassia, DeAtramentis Pearl Violet

Green: Rohrer & Klingner Verdura, Rohrer & Klinger Smaragdgrun

Turquoise: Waterman South Seas, Callifolio Bleu Pacifique

Brown: Callifolio Yalumba

Orange: Lamy Orange, Pilot Iro. Fuyu-gaki

Red/Pink/Burgundy: Rohrer & Klingner Solferino, Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Bordeaux, Callifolio Andrinople, Callifolio Carmin, P. Iro Yama Budo, Sailor Kobe Ooji Cherry

So, when I started this thread, I was considering only 7 inks due to the minimal space I had in our RV. I was having some difficulty deciding which to take.

I then got this brilliant idea to buy some a number of wide mouth 30ml Nalgene bottles. These are small bottles, but far more stable that the ink sample bottles we all get. So, I filled 15 of them with about 15ml of ink. The rest were samples that I had just ordered and want to try out. What is really great is that all of the little bottles take up far less space that the 7 bottles I was originally planning to take.

I'm glad I went through this little exercise. It really showed me how much I love a variety of colors and formulas of ink.

Black: Noodler's Black (TWO bottles!).
Blue: Noodler's Manhattan Blue, probably.

Blue-Black: Akkerman #10 Blue-Black (iron gall) or Sailor Blue-Black.
Purple: Probably no purple, although I like Montblanc Violet and J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune.
Green: Probably wouldn't bring green on a road trip, but if I did probably Iroshizuku Chiku-rin.
Turquoise: Waterman Mysterious Blue, perhaps.
Brown: Noodler's Walnut.
Orange: Pelikan Brown (hehehe).
Red/Pink/Burgundy: Really enjoying J. Herbin 1670 Rouge Hematite lately (in a Platinum Preppy). But KWZI Thief Red... might need to get that.

Grey: Faber-Castell Stone Grey.

And now I've got Maruzen Hatobanezu hovering around the perimeter, wanting to be included.

First. I hope the springs in your RV hold up. It might help if you didn't take superfluous things food, water, blankets, etc

Secondly. I'm looking forward to reading your colorful diary of this cross-country jaunt :D

  • 2 months later...

Well it has been a couple of months and we are still in the RV. And my inks have changed again.

After 6 weeks, I had to fly home to consult for one of my clients. I ended up taking all of my pens and ink with me because I wasn't sure when I would be catching up with my husband again. It might be 2 weeks or 2 months.

The consulting job ended up being 3 weeks. At the end of that time, I flew back, but only took a few inks with me in their Nalgene bottles:

DeAtramentis Pearl Violet

Sailor Jentle Nioi-sumire

Rohrer & Klingner Solferino

Waterman South Seas

and I brought a number of samples that I had laying around. I had left Iroshizuku Asa-gao and Callifolio Olivastre with my husband so that he had some ink to use. I decided that I wanted to use up the samples even through some of them I wasn't completely "wild" about.

I have since bought a bottle of Franklin-Cristoph Midnight Emerald.

These should last me until we return home around the middle of December.

I have my own opinions on this matter, of course. I think there are only six colors for writing: black, blue-black, purple, blue, green, and brown. For my purposes, the best in each are:

Black: Noodler's Heart of Darkness

Blue-Black: Pilot Blue Black

Purple: De Atramentis Aubergine

Blue: Noodler's Blue

Green: Diamine Sherwood (though I might consider something else if I ever use the entire bottle)

Brown: Iroshizuku Yama-Guri

Okay, I admit that Noodler's Red-Black, which is a burgundy, is a workhorse ink for me. But I didn't buy my bottle, and if I ever run it out, I won't buy one then.

Markup Honorable Mentions:

Red: Sheaffer Skrip

Turquoise: Sheaffer Skrip. Navajo Turquoise may take its place should I ever use the whole bottle.

If I ever wind up with some orange, it'll go in this category also.

Astonishingly, the list hasn't changed in the last year, except for the purple. It turns out Aubergine is more fade-prone than Noodler's Purple Martin or Diamine Bilberry. I am also considering Noodler's Purple POP, once I have some idea how it resists fading.

Road Trip!

Small bottles to fit with an imaginative old lady in a 3 pedal Miata B)

  • Black = Aurora
  • Blue = Parker Penman
  • Turquoise = Sheaffer Peacock
  • Green = Caran d'Ache Amazon
  • Yellow = Private Reserve Buttercup
  • Orange = Noodler's Cayenne
  • Red = Diamine Wild Strawberry
  • Pink = Sheaffer Persian Rose
  • Grey = Noodler's Lexington
  • Brown = Waterman Havana

Drat. An early 3 pedal Miata is one of the few cars I would really like to own. It's highly unlikely, alas.

My choice of eight:

Black: Pelikan Edelstein Onyx

Blue: Pelikan Edelstein Sapphire

Green 1: (For broader nibs) Pelikan Edelstein Aventurine

Green 2: (For smaller nibs) Montblanc Jonathan Swift

Violet: Iroshizuku Murasaki Shikibu

Brown: Waterman Encre Havanne

Turqoise: Waterman Inspired Blue

Gray: De Atramentis Pope Benedict XVI.

Wait, there's a Pope Benedict XVI ink? I love that man! This just possibly might change my mind about grey being a betrayal of black....

ETA: I found it, and Pope St. John Paul II (a dark green), and Pope Francis (red), and St. Hildegarde of Bingen (a medium green), and St. Elizabeth of Hungary (warm brown), but only on De Atramentis's own site.

And also Martin Luther (black).
