Having So Many Inks

I salute your "quest" & wish you joy in acquiring MORE ink! I have always pitied those persons who espouse "LESS is MORE!" FOR ME......."MORE IS MORE!" & pens & ink consume less of space than anything that has "caught my interest." I have only 2 cars instead of the six I had before purchasing the last one ten years ago. I have owned two houses @ the same time & now only have one.......so I think a "few bottles ink/pens is not really such a big deal.

My Mother liked quilts & always praised their virtues of not requiring a daily feeding, brushing or exercise as her other "pets" did. She said they seemed perfectly content to sit quietly "rolled up" inside a wardrobe until their turn came for a bed. Another friend, a Veterinarian praises her rescued cats which she claims her husband can never keep track of once she releases them to her barns. "Honestly he can never count them to know how many I have brought home! Can you imagine trying that with DOGS? Why they would be lining up to get his attention & my number would be UP!"

Ink takes up less space (& care) than cars, houses, quilts or cats! More ink...please.

LOL especially the dogs.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

It depends on whether you think of using a fountain pen as just a mere tool to write with, or think there is an additional aesthetic benefit from having lots of ink colours to choose from, or indeed, nib widths. To me, there definitively is. Using a fountain pen is more than the mere prosaic articulation of letters. Ink is more than a utilitarian item. It enhances the experience and becomes artistic in its ability to express the character of the writer.

I don't consider my selection (not 'collection', as I use them all) of >320 inks as being any different from my selection of coloured pencils (>400), or my drawing pens (>100), or my water colour paints (>100). I consider them all essential to enhancing my enjoyment of my writing, drawing and painting.

If I ever go missing, it's cause I went to visit Migo and got lost somewhere in her stash of inky-ness and goodies. Don't bother sending rescue. Tell my mother I love her.

Hello,

From what I have read I don't really have a lot of inks; I have 9. I don't buy a lot of ink as I prefer to use samples that I get from a seller on eBay. The inks I do have are Montblanc and Pelikan Edelstein limited editions that I intend to store for the future. Whether I actual get round to using them is another issue.

I just like having the option of color. I guess I've always had the color bug. I use them for note-taking; it helps a tremendous amount. I'm addicted to fountain pens and ink, but there are worse things... like Hitler.

My goodies are indeed stored in 2 locations, 10,000 miles apart, in deep underground bunkers, with the latest hi-tec surveillance and alarm systems enabled. My preciousessssssess have also been disguised as ballpoint pen refills, to put inky-fingered visitors off the scent.

  • 2 weeks later...

as they say... 'variety is the spice of life'. i for one would always welcome options/choices. there was a time when i had over 50 bottles, all in various colors and brands.

i have come to a point where i have tried enough colors and brands to know which ones i'd like to use and keep for the long term. i now end up donating many of them, about 20 so far, at pen meets. as well as including them as a free gift when i get to sell some of my many used fountain pens. i have thrown away few, only because failed attempts at ink-mixing.

so my advice to you, there is nothing wrong in 'collecting' many inks. the more you get to use the many varieties, the more you learn which ones you actually need.

you can always use the less desirable ones for ink mixing if you feel adventurous. or else, do what i do, donate them to other fountain pen users. it's always nice to bring happiness in this little community of ours.

Perhaps we all need to realize that we are artists at heart.

The stroke of the pen, the color of ink we choose are all individual choices made by the artist wielding the pen.

Like most painters, be it watercolor, acrylic or oil, we prefer to have many colors to create our own "art".

Of course, the "hype" about the newest, latest greatest ink color helps fuel the need to possess. (i.e.the new J. Herbin inks). It's as though this new latest greatest ink will revolutionize our writing . . . make our penmanship look beautiful with shading and sheen.

I have about 8 bottles of ink and 30+ ink samples. I'm satisfied.

I am the last person who would ever argue with this. PEN people will tsk tsk at the sheer madness of choices out there and the number of bottles people have collected around them. They much prefer to load up a pen (often chosen from their own mad collection of pens) with their tried and true favourite ink ;) As an artist I do regard each vial and bottle the same way I would count my coloured pencils, pastels and paints... as tools. No one would blink about a person having more than one shade of watercolour in their half pan, or replacing a worn pencil crayon in a set of 120 ...which can run upward of $3.00 each. :)
