For a DARK blue, I agree, Diamine Midnight.

For a medium blue, I like Private Reserve DC Super Show Blue.

Ah the quest for the right blue ink!

I too have found this to be a challenge, however I must confess I haven't tried too many blue inks. I have the disadvantage of not living near a retail store that deals with fountain pens and inks. So I must sing the praises of the Fountain Pen Network for the many reviews about the wide variety of blue inks that are available. These reviews helped me narrow my list of options considreably. Here is the result of my quest:

  1. Parker's Blue -- too light and washed out
  2. Sheaffer's Blue -- too light and washed out
  3. Levenger's Cobalt Blue -- beautiful color; bleeds a lot; hasn't worked well for me when writing anything longer than a paragragh or two*
  4. Waterman Serenity Blue -- Very happy with the shade of this blue and its writing qualities--not quite as brilliantly blue as Levenger's Cobalt Blue, but (for me) a very satisfying blue ink

* What do I mean when I say that Levenger's Cobalt Blue hasn't worked well for writing anything longer than a paragraph or two? I just find that the ink starts skipping after I have been writing for a while, although it works well when I get started. When I use the same pens with other inks, I don't have this problem.

Oh me too. Cobalt and I are not friends.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).
