Noodler's Switch To Plastic Bottles

I wish he'd ease up on the act a bit though :/

"We had the option for this bottle, but it was in heathen European measures and around here we use good ole' American measures""

On the one hand, I understand and largely agree with your point. On the other hand, if he did, I think we might have to dispatch a delegation to Nathan's basement to check for pods.

Plastic? Yuck! A good excuse not to buy any more ink - at least for a few weeks.

Hmmm… this sounds like an opportunity to do some bottle-swapping.

I have a couple of Noodler's that don't really do much for me, though I can't bring myself to give them away because I like the bottles/ labels so much. Getting some plastic bottles seems like a good solution-- I could put some ink I like in the glass bottles, and the ink I don't in the plastic ones to PIF to a friend with a cat who likes to knock things over. : )

I would be very sad if the plastic became permanent, though.

I prefer glass bottles, but plastic bottles bother me not. Though, I'm a bit indifferent to Noodler's inks as a whole, so I can't quite imagine how fans of this brand must feel.

Still, damn, them new bottles are fugly.

Heh. That's probably on par with the mileage a Saturn rocket would get right at liftoff :P

Its a good thing that my bottle holder is made using Lego, I can easily reconfigure to match the bottle size and shape. That light plastic bottle will need the bottle holder more that the heavier glass bottle. I would hate to knock over a bottle of ink. YUK

As for inking, I normally transfer ink from the source bottle into an ink vial anyway, so there will not be much difference with the new bottle. Either bottle (glass or plastic) is too deep to refill directly from with most of my pens, once you get below a certain depth from the top of the bottle.

Though I do agree, it is nice to be able to see how much ink you have left in the bottle.

I think the solution to that will be to mark the ink level on the side of the bottle with a Sharpie.

As I understand it, the factory sold the mold and Nathan had almost no time to come up with a substitute. The plastic is intended as an interim solution so there will be no lack of Noodler's available. With boxes and labels already printed, plastic that would work with the existing specs was the best solution.

I'm fairly indifferent, myself. As long as the ink remains as good as it typically has been, what it comes in is more or less immaterial to me. If it will do a good job of containing the liquid and protecting it from degredation, that's good enough for me. I *like* certain bottle designs, but the Noodler's bottle has always been really nothing more than a nondescript container for a good ink. I don't really see much change in that. I do like the square a bit better than the round, just for how they nest on my shelves, but that's certainly not a deal-breaker. I won't be upset either way, and I'd far rather see a bottle change than a decrease in quality or an increase in price.

Ya know, it looks just like a bottle that aspirin comes in.

I was just saying the same thing to my husband, only I was thinking vitamin bottles. Got to see the video while I was waiting on having a tire checked out and for lack of reading material I poked around the Goulet Pens website and saw the blog post with the link to the video.

I can't believe that Nathan can't find a good substitute inexpensive glass bottle (I went bottle shopping last winter for bottles to transfer some vintage inks into). Admittedly I was looking at amber colored Boston Rounds, but a few places had square bottles as well.

Unless he doesn't want to go overseas -- a fair number of the cheaper places seem to have the bottles manufactured in China.

I watched the video twice, just to understand. It wasn't only a "you have to switch to a European standard measurement", it was more of a "you have to switch to a smaller bottle that we already make and we're going to charge you more for that bottle. A lot more." Most people I know wouldn't react very well to such an offer.

He would have had to charge more money for less ink. Really has nothing to do with the metric system. The current Noodler's bottle is holding nearly 90ml of ink for the "average" price of 12.50 USD. That's a bargain (at least here in the U.S. it is).

Spent some time on eBay -- Lots of antique inkwells, generic ink bottles (in glass, missing caps), and several Skrip bottles in good shape but needing cleaning. So if the plastic worries you, buy another bottle and fill with your favorite Noodler's.

Enjoy,

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

A pragmatic choice by Nathan since his primary concern is keeping costs stable. Opaque plastic bottle alternative, even if recyclable, is something I'm not keen for aesthetically or environmentally (in my opinion, less plastic produced, the better).

If you are concerned about using plastic and you already have a favorite ink receptacle, consider a bulk purchase of your favorite ink. There are still one pound (16 oz), two pound (32 oz) and 4 pound (64 oz) glass bottles available, waiting to filled with your favorite ink and dispatched to your preferred retailer. Simply inquire with your favorite authorized Noodler's Ink retailer about availability, cost and shipping.

a good point. I had no idea that this was an option. I will consider it. Have you done this yourself? I am willing to send my old bottles back, as to the milkmen of yore. My guess is that no retailer really wants to use someone else's old bottle, but maybe you know which one has done this...?
