Magnus really enjoyed your blog reviews. You sound a bit like me I would venture to say.

For me there are two types or fountain pens, 1 - the ones I like and 2 - the ones I don't like!

Look forward to reading some more of your blogs.

I'm glad you like it. More are in the pipeline. They'll mostly be Chinese, but there are definitely other pens that fit into Rule 25. :D I have some frugal inks coming, too, including 3 different colors from Hero.

Just an update on the nib fitting. My white Jinhao is now sporting a Bock fine nib. The nib needed realigning and a very mild dose of micro-mesh but it has resulted in a very smooth writing pen indeed. I can very well see this becoming a favourite pen. It just goes to show that you need not pay the earth for a decent writing experience.

That 189FC is a pretty impressive looking pen, and no mistake.

The new nib goes really well with the pen. 1st class.

Jinhao 1200! (my review)

Great Review Magnus, most enjoyable.

The 1200 is a brilliant pen.

I have the silver, although, mine does have a broad nib, which is deliciously wet and smooth.

My dragon spews forth Noodlers Baystate blue, just to enhance (if possible) the overall RayBan factor when the beast is in use.

I love mine, and everyone should have one. :D

Thanks for the kind words, Ian. I hope to spend a few minutes tuning up the broad nib on my 1200 and make it a little wetter, a little smoother. I'll update my review of it if that helps a lot. Do you have any other obnoxiously blingy favorite pens?

Hi Magnus

I have one or two that could be described as "blingy" :D but In no way compete with the Blingfest that is the scaly beast 1200.

The Hero 3013 is a red black and gold affair with a gold horse and Chinese characters on it, making it quite blingy (I think it's on the show and tell somewhere) It has a nice sculpted section and has a beautifully smooth nib, making it a favourite writer.

The 8 horses pens from Hero, Baoer and Jinhao are quite blingy in their gold versions.

I particularly like my bronze Hero version, the 861.

It too has a lovely sculpted section, and although I'm not generally a fan of hooded, or fine nibs, this one I really do like.

The nib is super smooth and has a lovely crisp fine line for when finer writing is required.

There are loads more blingy pens from Jinhao, like the 1000, 3000, 5000 and some of the 950s but they tend to be more on the "dearer" side, however, they are very high up on the bling scale.

It certainly has it's moments with me and it is built like a tank :-) I am not sure what is going on with the fake screw thread though because the cap is a push (or should I say snap closure). The Faber-Castell nib is actually a very nice nib indeed and really does make this bargain basement pen a joy to use.

....by the way have you received my corporation tax payment yet ;-)

Magnus, an excellent review and great to see these pens getting the review treatment afforded their Western counterparts. However, I think the Jinhao 1200 may be a little too 'noble' for me :-D

I was in the break room at work today and felt inspired to write a few pages of speculative fiction concept in my Rhodia webbie. Of the 7 pens I had in my backpack, I reached for the noblest Jinhao 1200. Conversation around me stuttered for a few moments as people took it all in. A few seconds later, I was off in my own little world writing like a man on a mission, so I didn't catch any commentary that was made in the presence of the dragon.

Jinhao X750 "Shimmering Sands"

I like the Hero ink, minus the smell.

This X750 feels lighter than my other one. I'll need to weigh it & confirm.

The nib on this Jinhao needs work. But I like the design.

Love that design also, if it only writes half as well as it looks it'll be a winner.

This nib is the first Jinhao nib described as a Medium that actually writes like a western Medium. It's a little thicker even than my Lamy Safari M nib. It's thicker than my one and only Jinhao Broad nib. I don't like it. It's a candidate for grinding. I'm going to try replacing it with a finer nib. I tend to journal "between the dots" in my Rhodia for most of my writing, and when I want to go big, I have a few stub nibs that I use for that. A true medium nib has very limited applications for me. It's got to go.

That Hero blue-black #232 is a winner. The Rhodia is a winner. The shimmering sands X750 is a winner. The nib is the only part not holding its own weight. ;)

I'd actually forgotten how good this pen was.

It's quite a looker in its' Red Lava garb too.

That's it now back in my "using" group, and I'll be using it at every opportunity.

I gave my husband a 750 Shimmering sands for Christmas, that he hasn't inked yet. He asked for my 500, just to test out, and has been journaling with it every morning. I wonder if he would make a

swap?

Ian, how does a Jinhao 250 compare to a x450 or 886 in width? I love my x450s-but I need an orange pen for my purse that is not as big as the 159. I like the weight of the Hero 8009, but it is too small in my hand. I am also looking at a Baoer 517 and Regal 19. I need a pen that weighs at least 30 gm and is as wide as an 886.

The 250 is a narrower pen than the x450. It compares more favorably with the 886 in that department. I'll try to remember to take some measurements with the micrometer and the scale on both pens so you can directly compare.
