Glad you liked it.

Today I bring another stoic quote:

If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favorable

Seneca

Let us continue with Seneca:

It is not the man who has too  little, but the man who craves more, that is poor

That is a nice quote, deeper (and not only for the many layers) than superficially may seem. Thanks for posting it.

I think that one could say I have a soft spot for Seneca (and the stoics).

Non est astra mollis e terris via.

There is no easy way from the earth to the stars.

And now a quote from Socrates. I think that this is one we should strive to always bear in our minds when dealing with others:

Be kind, for every one you meet is fighting a hard battle.

Socrates

The ink, by the way, is Diamine Ancient Copper, which has become a new favorite.

Not everything is stoicism. I find the following quote much instructive in the current situations all around: we are letting ourselves be carried out by 'us versus them' arguments instead of trying to understand what each other means and why.

Strong minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, weak minds discuss people.

Socrates

Words from Socrates that speak to social media and a societal obsession with celebrities.

Adding to the former, this quote from Zeno of Citium

We have two ears and one mouth, so we should listen more than we say.

Well, let us go back to Schopenhauer, even pessimism can teach us good lessons. If one thinks of this, it is but a rephrasing of Socrates' 'All I know is I know nothing' from a different perspective and with a different twist.

Every man takes the limits of his own field of vision for the limits of the world.

Arthur Schopenhauer

Very nice.

Thanks, I am glad that you liked it.

Today I have a new twist. Some times one may find interesting quotes in less serious sources, in this case from the Principia Discordia, the sacred text of Discordianism (all hail Eris!) :)

It is my firm belief that it is a mistake to hold firm beliefs.

Reminds me of "Absurdist Short Fiction". . IE: Short Play: "Waiting For Godot", by Samuel Beckett I think. . ?  Good one. Thanks for posting.

No, thanks to you for taking the time to read it. I find it flattering. And worse of all, encouraging (I know, I can hear the shrieks of horror in the background as i write this). You are most welcome.

Discordianism spins around the rule of five. Despite the implicit contradiction, their fifth commandment is worth noting as well, specially to remember one has always to be skeptic of anything one learns (even this); that does not mean not believing anything, but to contrast everything before believing anything.

V. A Discordian is Prohibited of Believing What he Reads.

That is truly a great quote. And more widely applicable than one might initially believe. Thanks for posting it, it is truly inspiring.

How many times a day do we feel like this? And, how many times a day do others try to lead us this way to control us?

1. Ye have locked yourself in a cage of fear --and, behold, do ye now complain that ye lack FREEDOM!

Chapter 1. The epistle to the paranoids.

--Lord Omar

How very fitting these days, especially in the US, but seemingly in the world at large.  I hope the Admins don't take this as verboten political commentary.

I don't know why they would.  I see is as an expression of one's opinion.

Please, do not forget these quotes come from a humorously mocking parody with an initial first edition of five xeroxed copies. Maybe they should be taken in a joking spirit?

But, well, if that is so, I will be the first to welcome moderators removing the post. if there is something I want to avoid is infringing the rules. though I hope it is not the case.

I view that quote in a broader scope, as psychiatrist (and existentialist) Karl Jaspers proposed (I'll have to re-read him and rescue underlined quotes --one day): it is fear and guilt that take us from doing what we really want and often what impedes us from reaching our full potential in life.

A second aspect of fear is the next quote (and, once more, if it exceeds the tolerable limits, I am the first to solicit this post to be removed, please, and profusely apologize for any inconveniences caused), which I take as a call to mutual understanding, tolerance and cooperation (but YMMV):

2. Ye have cast out yer brothers for devils and now complain ye, lamenting, that you've been left to fight alone.

Chapter 1. The epistle to the paranoids.

--Lord Omar

Principia Discordia

large.Principia_Discordia_2_Ye_have_cast

I confess, I have often fought my fights alone when I could have asked for help, not because of mistrust, but self-sufficiency, which is also a mistake.

And, most certainly, I have -and still do- witnessed many times -many more than reasonable or tolerable- this paranoid attitude in Science and in too many highly competitive fields: many commercial enterprises favor a culture of internal competition -which sits on fearing and fighting each other-- within themselves or against each other (like the "not invented here" syndrome in engineering/programming) --which I think is to their own (and our own at large) detriment, but who am I to really know?

I know not everyone agrees with me in my 'cooperative' views, and the fact that this quote comes from a joke doesn't lend it much confidence. But that lies in the realm of another quote reserved for later. ;)

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

Very good missive.

Read something succinct lately about meeting the changing dynamics of social media, et al, that contain or consist of; assertive dominance (ie: bullying), passive aggression (manipulation, fact checking, sniping, etc), etc, with "ambivalent disregard. (ie: ignore the "noise")

And, staying "on topic" with substantive content per any forum guidelines and the OP (original post) intent.

In this case, please continue your excellent photos of handwritten quotes and what fountain pen and paper was used in your excellent penmanship.

Is your writing a style of calligraphy?

Can you post more "stoic" quotes?

Also, quotes from "absurdism".?

thanks for your thoughtful posts and pictures.
