The OP hasn't been here in more than four years...................

Fred

Oh, pity. Thank you for letting me know. Glad this thread goes on because I’ve seen some wonderful quotes and penmanship.

Some quotes to add to the collection:

I like the next specially for it reminds me that no matter what we know, we fail to see our own limitations and defects. I liked it so much I included it in my PhD Thesis:

fpn_1579454223__villon_ballade_sm.jpg

It translates more or less as

Prince, in summary, I know everything,

I know coloured and blemished

I know Death who all consumes

I know everything, but my own self.

I don't know why this one uploaded rotated. The first one, in German, is from Goethe and reminds us of our own foolery in fearing Truth, more or less, freely translated it would be something like

Are they then such a big Mystery: God, Men, and the World?

Not!

But nobody dares approach them, hence they remain a mystery.

The last one, in Spanish, if from a Medioeval Andalusian poet, and reminds us that our spirit will always be free, no matter what anyone does to destroy our works. It would translate like

Even if you burn the paper,

You will not burn what paper contains;

Since, inside my soul,

In spite of you, it remains

And with me it goes

Wherever my feet take me.

Another page that, despite looking OK on the computer, and even when selected for upload, displays rotated. Sorry, I should learn how to do it properly.

The first one stuck in my memory since I was in the school. I think I sort of find the stanza funny, for it reminds me how we acted whenever my friends and me were up to any mischief. It's in Italian and would read

Hush, hush, quiet, quiet,

Let's not make any noise,

Through the balcony stairs

Lets get out of here quickly.

I know in the opera's context it has different connotations, but...

The next one is something I continuously forget, a quote in Greek that I also included in my PhD and that, if you've read any post of mine, will show how weak my memory really is. It say more or less

For, as my master taught me, a long discourse

is the enemy of attention

Taken from the Digenis Akritas.

Next comes a quote in Spanish, from Argentinian José Hernández, set in the mouth of Argentinian national literary hero, Martin Fierro, and goes like

There are men who of their science

Have their heads filled,

There are all kinds of wise men,

But, although an ignorant, I say

Better than learning a lot

Is to learn good things.

The last two quotes, you could look up, but they are my lame excuse for these crazy posts of mine:

Sometimes, being crazy is funny (Seneca)

It is sweet to derail sometimes (Horatio)

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.
