(This is how my penmanship looks, when I'm lucky, if I write through my right-arm tremor. It's looked worse.)

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

I realize others might be caught up in what took place beyond the four corners of that document. I'm not one of them. It wouldn't matter to me whether Mrs. Bixby had had no sons at all or had been a figment of Lincoln's imagination. And I'm fortunate enough to own The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln (Rutgers University Press, 1953) and fortunate enough to have found the time over the years to read, among other things, every letter and every poem Lincoln ever composed, many of them, like the Bixby letter, several times. I have no doubt he wrote that letter. It sounds like Lincoln. To each, his or her own.

Redactin' to add an R {are}

and lookin' at a Mathew Brady photograph {over my right shoulder}

in my study..which was made from the original wet plate negative.

Brady took the photo on the same day Lincoln addressed folks at

Cooper Institute, and next to the picture the last line from his speech that day...........................................

LET US HAVE FAITH THAT RIGHT MAKES MIGHT, AND IN THAT FAITH,

LET US, DARE TO DO OUR DUTY AS WE UNDERSTAND IT.
