Pen Stands

Broke out the CNC for this one! Still in-work, the pen stand needs to actually be glued to the base, the bottom of the base needs to be finished, and the little silicone foot-pads need to be installed. But this gets the general idea across, I think. There will be more and better photos later, once I have some daylight.

Thanks! :) Based on input from the crew over on the Facebook page, I'm also making one for a Iroshizuku bottle, holding two pens.

Hehehe, I'm having way too much fun in the shop! Every time I post a picture, someone gives me more ideas! :D

This is similarly unfinished to the last one, the stands are just sitting on the base at this point, there's still sanding and finishing to complete, and I need to add the little silicone feet. But I like how it's coming out! This one is a prototype, the one I just completed is improved a bit in the fit of the bottle. This bottle pocket has too much play in it, so I tightened it up a bit. I also raised the floor of the pocket by 1/4", so that the bottle is a bit more visible. I'll have some photos of the walnut version as soon as the drying is complete, it's still sitting on the drying rack.

Possibly, although it would be a lot more practical to make them in two pieces like this, then glue them up edge-to-edge between sanding out the inside profile, and sanding the outside profile. For all intents and purposes I could make it *look* like a single piece, though. :)

EDIT: And complete! Feet installed, finish done, pen holders attached. This one is ready to use!

So, here's my latest variation! Five pens, spaced along a 90-degree arc, with 18 degrees of separation. This is just a mock-up so far, the base only has one coat of finish and the stands have none at all. They're just sitting there, obviously, not attached. I think in the next version, I'm going to move the pens to a more centered location. I thought I'd like the backward spacing... but not so much, I think. I'm also considering reversing them entirely, so that the pens are arrayed along the outside of the arc, instead of the inside...

What do you guys think? Ideas?

Late to the thread. Not sure about this. There are tools and other things that I think are tools, but which I've never seen or heard of before. And there is some terminology that sounds like a whole other language.

Bottom line though is that the designs and finished product are pretty amazing.

And these are for selling?

Been lurking and following along from the start and liking the developments, but now I want to pipe up.

I like this vertical stand and more of them in an arc (with the pens inside, thank you very much) would be very nice to my eyes, but I'd want them maybe a little tighter spaced. So that the bases of each separate stand would touch its neighbor. That might mean six in the ark of 90 degrees for example. And maybe something at that point to make the transition smoother? Like a small wedge maybe. And I'd also be interested in buying one, once that design has become firm...

I tried reversing them, but I'll have to re-position the marked holes on the base for that to work right, I think. Next round I might give that a shot! I've actually heard several requests now for different spacings, both tighter and looser packing, so I think I'm going to have to run up, say, a six or seven-pen in the same footprint, and possibly a three-pen as well. For a prototype, I'm quite happy with how this one came out, I think! :)

And thank you very much, Empty Of Clouds! I'm having an absolute blast getting to play in the shop, and making stuff I haven't tried before. Every one is a new challenge, with new quirks to work out. It's a load of fun! They are more or less for sale, drop me a message if you're interested in something I've done, or something you'd like to see. :)

Here's the finished version!

And here's one I've had a few requests for! I had to go back and do some re-design on the standard "horizontal" pen holder I've been making, and I came up with a design that nests well in a line, and can be extended vertically without any significant trouble. I've made these from two to five pens, so far. These are in maple, at the request of a gentleman that commissioned them from me, so they don't have quite the colour that my usual cherry does. I do believe I'll be making more of these. :) Interestingly enough, they become more stable the larger a number nested together becomes. That five-pen stand is like trying to roll over a brick!

Hmm, interesting. I have three oblique dip pen holders and four straight dip pen holders. Thinking about a design for storing them when not in immediate use, and yet easily accessible if I want grab one and write. At the moment the straight holders are standing in a cup - rather risky when they have pointed nibs attached - and the obliques are resting across a piece of equipment that looks as though it came from the laboratory of a mad scientist - it has a stand and three metal arms, one holding a magnifying glass (a real one), and the other two ending in crocodile clips. All the joints are universal. Weird thing really, was given to me by a geologist friend.

Anyway, I'm thinking on this!

I love those, they're generally called a "third hand", at least that's what we call them at work. We use them for soldering a whole bunch, to hold the components together so you can use the iron in one hand, and the solder in the other. :)

This should theoretically work just fine for dip pens as well, a Speedball straight pen older fits fine. I don't have number 6 templated out yet, but it is just a straight extrapolation of number 5, a half-inch taller...

If by 'knife block' you mena standing vertically then that is what I want to avoid! I have already stabbed myself multiple times reaching for one of the vertically, bayonet nib affixed straight holders. Ouch!

Well, I see no reason that I couldn't make up something along the line of the C-style stands I've made, and gang several together to hold dip-pen holders with the nibs angled backwards away from the user... I will have to toss that idea around a bit! The trick is that the length of the dip-pen holder tends to require a taller stand, and my current method more or less maxes the size...

Hmm... Actually, you just gave me an interesting idea, Chouffleur. I'm going to try something this evening, and get back to you on that!

In the mean time, have some new stuff! A two-stand Iroshizuku holder in oak, using an asymmetric hexagonal base with vertical stands instead of horizontal ones, and a three-pen horizontal display in walnut. :D

I don't think I really want my dip pen holders to be at any vertical angle. They vary in length from 16cm to 22 cm and are made from nice woods. Apart from the pointy dangers I would prefer them not to be standing on delicate tail finials. Still thinking!
