Like A Pilot Hi-Tecpoint V5 Rt

As I'm new to the world of fountain pens, I probably have different expectations than more experienced fountain pen users.

 

I want a fountain pen that writes as thin as a Pilot Hi-tecpoint V5 RT. What shall I aim for?

I guess a Lamy EF nib will be too broad (I have an AL-star with a F-nib as my first fountain pen). Any Asian pen that will fit my expectations?

 

Budget: ~US$50

You should get an EF nib from Japan pens, any of them will do.

The problem is at that price point, fhe choices are limited, here are some suggestions:

 

- Pilot Prera: As far as i know this doesn't come with EF nib. But a nib frim Pilot Penmanship will fit. You can get both of them at lower than $50 but i don't think this is very practical though.

 

- Sailor Young Profit: solid choice and the price is good.

 

- Platinum 3776/3776 Century: I prefer the 3776 Century than the normal one due to gold nib and slip and seal cap. You can get one shipped from Japan at $62+shipping. A bit higher than your budget but the best for that price. And it also have Ultra EF.

J-subculture is a good place to start. But i will check Amazon from time to time, there are many Japanese sellers there.

At that price point I'd recommend a Pilot Prera. The fine is quite fine, much more so that the Lamy.

Do you know if the nib on the Prera can be changed to a XF nib, if I still think it's too broad?

An EF nib from a Pilot Penmanship should fit. Also, if you get a Prera and it is too dry, there are good videos online to increase ink flow.

How are the Fine nibs on Platinum Cool and Plaisir?

I've found that a platinum plaisir fine isn't as fine as a pilot fine nib, but platinum nibs are usually great. I have three Preppy pens and they all have great nibs, but the caps are terrible. If you want something extremely fine, the pilot fine is one of the finest I've seen
