The Zareen From Deccan

We (I and Jai) discovered this model during our recent visit to the Deccan pen stores, Hyderabad. We were at the end of our visit, pens to buy had been selected and I had already asked Farooq to bill my purchases, and while he was busy doing so at the main inside counter, I spotted two of these pens in one corner of their huge fountain pens display chest. I had to ask the other clerk at the shop to remove these pens, it was love at first sight. So much so, that I requested Farooq to have one of the pens filled with red ink for use during the remainder of my trip. I think they filled either Camlin or Bril red ink.

The Zareen follows the legacy of Deccan's expertise in expertly mating a golden cap to a brushed black Ebonite body. We have already seen this in the example of the Caliph/786. The caps are push/click fit.

I was told that these remaining pieces were discovered in their godown and the pens themselves had been made a long time back. I hope they turn up with more stocks for me to hoard.

The elaborate section shape: The step on the section below the nib mates with the inner cap, ensuring a perfect airtight sealing of the nib.

A good quality Ebonite feeder has been used:

The cap finial pays homage to the Parker 75. The groove at the end of the barrel is a nice touch.

The plain cap top:

The inner cap and the clutch fingers:

When compared to a Parker 61:

I am still using the same red ink that Deccan filled for me. Here is a writing sample:

Isn't it wonderful how Deccan Pens come out with such unpretentious gems!! Each such pen hides within itself a wealth of detail that shows the superior design and engineering skills of Deccan. And it requires a pen maestro such as yourself to reveal these to us in such intimate detail and with such clear pictures. I had seen this pen with you that day at Deccan, but it is now that I fully comprehend and understand what went into making this pen.

Thanks again for those splendid pictures, Hari...as always, you excel...

What a wonderful pen Hari ! Thanks for sharing.Reminds me of school days when I tried to convince my parents to get me golden rolled capped wing-sung/ hero (with the golden cap, although with a hooded nib or a snorkel copy). Just curious about the golden cap, is it rolled by Deccan or imported from China?

Sonik

Thank you Sonik, yes a part of my immediate attraction for this pen was the nostalgia that this evoked. Nostalgia of having seen Parkers and then later Indian Pilots, Wilsons and then Hero et al in this same gold and black scheme. However Deccan took this further and made the rest out of Ebonite.

Regarding the cap, I feel Deccan might have taken the cap tube from a Chinese pen or a Wilson pen of that era and have modified the cap top finial and other details. There is no branding on the clip as well, so this is not from a Hero. Also the older Chinese pens from the 70s and 80s were of a much higher grade than what we get today, or maybe that is another figment of my nostalgia.

Thanks Pankaj, you are the biggest fan of my mat. :)

Thanks Baaj. The cap is metallic, no idea about exact material. Filling is by dropping ink directly into barrel.
