1930S Pen?

Sorry about being so vague, but I hope someone will recognise this pen. I picked it up in a job lot and it certainly isn't a top tier pen .. in fact I'd say it was quite a cheap pen when it first came out. However, it does look attarctive and it would be nice to get it working again, but I don't know where to start. I don't even know if it is all there. It seems to be some sort of piston filler, but it is currently siezed up. The pen itself is without any imprint, the steel nib is identified as a Platignum 1st Quality.

Anyone any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Platignum Visi-Ink, mayhap?

Well spotted, after the suggestionn I found this ...

But it seems that it was a bulb filler not a piston filler (that would explain fragments of what looked like an inksac in the barrel when I opened it.

The nib section and rear end are all soaking now ....

Can you get replacement bulbs still?

I've not had cause to need it yet, but I believe the recommendation is to use a regular sac cut down to size. Oh, and Pen Repair cautions that the air tube is a tight fit, should you remove it for thorough cleaning. Heat and knocking it out with a drift seems to be the advice. Have fun!

A really nice find! Since it's celluloid, I don't recommend soaking. By the way, does it have "M" imprinted on the nib?

Hi,

Thanks for that, and the cleaner it gets the nicer it looks. I didn't soak the celluloid sections, only the nib section and the reservoire, and that short soak did the trick.

Thanks for the advice on the sac, Grainweevil, I've got a couple of size 22s somewhere, and I imagine it'll be somewhere around that size. I can but try.

Lovely pen. Don't have any of these.

It would be great to get it back into working condition.

Thanks MalcolmH .... In the end it just needed a good clean and flushing, and with a cut down sac it is now working beautifully!

Here we are grainweevil , couldn't find a 22, but a 20 seems to be absolutely fine... Sadly it's a heavy grey day up here in Derbyshire, so the pics turned out a little dark .... How lucky you are living in that corner of the country!

Hi,

I am sorry but I would tend more for galalith, rather than celluloïd. Which doesn't change anything on the non-soaking recommandation, actually. The same practice is highly recommended for galalith.

Beautiful and very interesting pen, by the way.

Ooo, nice. Thanks for the pic, and the sac info - you never know, one day I may find one swims into my ken.

As for heavy grey in Derbyshire, I'll swap you for the rain that's absolutely bucketing down outside my window just now. Almost makes one feel sorry for the holidaymakers!

Cheers, Al

Seems to be pretty wet all along the South ... even stopped play at Canterbury just as Brunt started to pick off the Aussie top order!

Must be a time delay on those rain dances all the male Aussie batsmen were doing last week...!
