Lamy Safari - Clips

The more I look at that photoshopped image... the more I think, a copper plated nib would balance the whole thing out perfectly.

Copper bad for nibs? Corrodes too fast? Just realized, I never see it used.

One day, when I have some money eating a hole in my pocket, I'll have to buy an extra nib and do some home electroplating (with the help of YouTube of course).

Did you already recieve the clip and made the modifications?

I'm looking to create a golden lamy safari clip with galvanization or some other technique, but I am unsure how to take the clip off and afraid of ruining my pen. My pen will be a Lamy Safari Brown (from the line collaboration with the bear) and it will hopefully arrive in the next few days at my doorstep.

Oh, btw, I'm new here, first post! :vbg:

No, not yet... emailed this week for an update to see if it came in yet but, no response.

Clip should be easy to remove though... few YouTube walk-throughs... just Google "disassemble lamy safari" and half a dozen show up. Few are better than others, I think one by a Scottish guy was pretty good.

I debated doing electroplating or something like that with mine. The orange/copper pen with a silver clip was an odd choice. Once I realized hey, some Lamy have black clips, I simply emailed Lamy and got the name of a distributor in Ontario that can get parts. Ordered 2 black clips because still debating another Al-star. I want a purple one, but, seems to be 3-4 different shades out there and not sure which is which when ordering. Website photos aren't always accurate.

Thanks, I will look for tutorials for that then.

Not sure when I will make that clip though, right now I am trying to save up for my first "big" fountain pen, as in really expensive.

Though when the time has come, I might add in a gold nib for the safari aswell.

No... the distributor placed the order first week of Sept and said would be a few weeks to get. Though, usually 1-2 day response time, I messaged them Monday for an update and not a peep... maybe they forgot to order?

It does have the black B nib, which I like, it's smooth and wetter than the M nibs, using Apache Sunset... but, bit too fat for the size in which I write so, may need to grab me another black M nib for it for daily writing. Though, I tend to use the Lamy pens for designing/sketching ideas more than writing.

When that clip decides to show up, I will definitely post some photos. :D

Lamy Al Star - Copper-Orange "Black Edition"

Has a broad nib, as well as a medium nib that I bought when I grabbed the clips. Broad nib looks great when sketching with Noodler's Apache Sunset, such great shading, but, my writing is too small to use a broad nib with, so had to grab a medium as well. Never tried the fine yet, it's next on the list.

Was it hard to swap the clips?

Thanks... I bought an extra clip, just in case I bought the same pen in Black-Purple, or Graphite. Or, another Copper-Orange... debating the Al-Star or a TWSBI for my friend for Xmas.

Clip swap wasn't too hard, there are a few good YouTube videos, though info was a bit vague for one aspect. They say to stick a dowel in the cap and apply pressure while turning the black cap/screw on the end. It's not the pressure pushing on it that helps it unscrew, rather, you need something with some degree of grip because when you push inside the cap you have to keep the metal piece inside from turning while you unscrew the top. I was turning and turning and pushing and turning... top just kept spinning. Grabbed a different/rougher dowel and this time it was able to keep the inside from turning. May be better to use the rubber end of an unsharpened pencil. I say unsharpened, because you'll probably want to push the other end into your desk.

Once you have that black piece off, it's easy. I did however, wrap the pen cap in about 2 layers of masking take, just to be safe and prevent scratching.

Though, that's for my pen. I saw a post somewhere (will try to find it) that shows 4 generations of caps on the Lamy pens. Mine's 4th gen, not sure about the other 3.

Disassemble Video (about 4min in is the dowel part)

For the older generation ones ( I believe 1st-2nd or 3rd generation) it's actually very simple. I will you show: the cap is build differently, it is a metal screw -screwing mechanism. I actually prefer this kind of mechanism as it is more durable and easier to use to get the cap into pieces:

post-124685-0-12538800-1445860460_thumb.jpg

This is the normal cap with which we start.

post-124685-0-43109400-1445860506_thumb.jpg

When you screw off the metal top screw it looks like this.

post-124685-0-24921200-1445860583_thumb.jpg

You can now simply take of the remaining elements, because all was held together by the screw.

post-124685-0-49863500-1445860707_thumb.jpg

That's how the "raw" cap looks like.

You can now simply put in a new clip and screw it all together again, it takes less than 1-2 minutes. Please notice that there also sits a rubber ring in the element between the clip and the screw, which is meant (I guess) to prevent air from coming in so that the nib can't dry out.

Heard back already...

$6CAD for the clips... $18CAD for the nibs.

Idea was to do this with the Copper-Orange... quick photoshop side-by-side.

That's a definite improvement!

I'm definitely happy with the results... and luckily, where I bought it, was able to swap the nib for black at no extra cost, so, just $6 for a clip. Which, by total fluke, I was able to pick up and save the cost of shipping. I had to go to Toronto, 3 hours away, to take my sister to a Dr's appointment/specialist... who was about 8min down the road from where the Lamy parts were.

I think the contrast looks way better though, gives off a real Halloween vibe now.

Can you post the source, possibly e mail that is getting the clips. Can clips be changed on ballpoint, if so, how?

I emailed LAMY direct, and they sent me contact info for the Ontario distributor. You, being in Texas, I'll assume LAMY will have a closer contact for you.

Pen wise, looking at the ballpoint and fountain pen on their site, the caps look the same so I assume they'll swap in the same way, but, honestly I have no idea. I have 3 LAMY pens, all fountain pens.

Only ballpoints I have are Papermate's that are $2 for a 10pk. :D

Late reaction:

18 CDN$ for a nib? That's steep. The nibs are just under 5 EUR here, while 18-CDN$ would be about 12 EUR so that is more than double price!

Maybe they're cheaper there because you're closer to where they're made? :D

Maybe you should buy them up over there and sell them on here. Probably still be cheaper for use... $18/nib here + shipping! It's why I only have the 1 extra nib. Else I'd live to grab an F and a 1.1 stub.

Has anyone had any attempts or successes with this in the USA? I would be VERY intrigued by a Stormtrooper Safari, white with black nib + clip, or a purple-black AL-Star. I may even black out my Vista...

If no one has contacted Lamy USA O'd be willing to be the canary, but if there's a path with footprints on it it would be easier...

I contacted Lamey USA, Goulet pens, Fahrneys, in late Oct or early Nov, and no go here in US. If anyone else finds a source I would be interested.

Also how to change clip on a ballpoint.

Cappuccino should work. Frothy milk also helps to lubricate the nib. But it has to be made by a barista.

No replies required to my complaints about the Pelikan. A friend came to the rescue with some very magnification equipment - with the images thrown to a latge high res screen. Technology is a wonderful thing. Thanks to Mercian for the reply. I had been using the same paper & ink for sometime when the "singing" started. I have a theory but no proof that nibs get damaged when capping the pen. 👍
    • Mercian 22 Oct 22:28
@FineFinerFinest: sometimes nib-'singing' can be lessened - or even cured - by changing the ink that one is putting through the pen, or the paper that one is using. N.b. *sometimes*. Good luck

I'm not expecting any replies to my question about the singing Pelikan nib. It seems, from reading the background, that I am not alone. It's a nice pen. It's such a pity Pelikan can't make decent nibs. I have occasionally met users who tell me how wonderful their Pelikan nib is. I've spent enough money to know that not everyone has this experience. I've worked on nibs occasionally over forty years with great success. This one has me beaten. I won't be buying any more Pelikan pens. 👎

Also if a pen would take the foller ball refill then it should take the fiber tip as well? Anyway it's been awhile and I'm want to take my message collection beyond the few pieces that I have... Meaning I don't have a Parker these refills will fit in 🙄

Recently was lucky enough to buy a pristine example of the CF crocodile ball with the gold plating. Then of course I faced the same problem we all have over the years ,of trying to find e refill. Fortunately I discovered one here in the U.K. I wonder if there are other sources which exist in other countries, by the way they were not cheap pen

Somewhat confusing and off-putting ones, as said to me by my very honest friends. I don't have an X account though :<

I have a Conway Stewart Trafalgar set. It was previously owned by actor Russell Crowe and includes a letter from him. Can anyone help me with assessing its value?

Hullo! I really like making ink doodles, and I'd like to share a few. Anywhere on the site I can do so? Thanks in advance!

Just checking on a classified section and where we are with that. Many thanks. Bill
    • PAKMAN 29 June 1:57
@inky1 The software for the classified stopped working with the forum. So no we don't have a sales section anymore at FPN
    • inky1 28 June 16:49

Hi. Anybody ever heard about a Royal Puck Pen. Very small but good looking.
    • Eppie_Matts 23 June 19:25
Thanks! I've just ordered some #6's to experiment with.
    • Al-fresco 21 June 12:11
@Eppie_Matts Shouldn't be a problem - I've just put a Bock #6 Titanium into a La Grande Bellezza section. Went straight in without any problem.

Hi all - I'm new to experimenting with pens and nibs. Can I put a bock 6 on a Pineider? Thanks!

Hi, I'm new to this forum and was wondering where is the best place to sell a Montblanc ballpoint pen? Are ballpoints allowed here? It's a beautiful pen that deserves a great listing. Thanks.

I just noticed that the oppsing team of the game I watched last night had a player named Biro in their lineup. He must be part of Marsell the oily magician’s cadre
