Sheaffer 440

I have a nice Sheaffer 440 that I just filled and am still working on the first converter full of ink. I have noticed a few things though. The back stroke (I am right handed) is a little scratchy,at first it was really scratchy and sipped a bit but it seems to have broken in a bit to where it is only a little scratchy (still more so than my Lamy). I also noticed that the feed under the nib is fairly off center. So much so that the left hand tine has almost no "feed" under it where the feed ends. I wondered if this might be most of the problem all the way around but I don't know if I should "dive in" to trying to take it apart or not. I have looked it up here and seen several "how tos" and even a video but I'm still a little shakey on just tearing my new (old stock) pen apart.

Should the feed be more centered and is that something that I could fix by removing the feed and section as shown in the videos? Thanks for your help and opinions!
