Piston Filler V.2

For those interested, here is the second version of my piston fill design that I have been messing around with. I tried to correct some of the flaws my last one had, mainly the material of the plunger. I used Ebonite for the plunger this time, and used aluminum for the threaded connector. I also put a clip on it for no better reason than the fact that I enjoy clips. I also cut room to put an o-ring between the section threads and the internal threads to seal the pen off from any ink leaks.

I still would like to find a coarser thread for the piston mechanism so it doesn't take so darn long to fill, so I am in the process of learning to cut threads on my metal lathe (a whole new endeavor in itself). Also I realized how ridiculously small the cap threads and section looks in relation to the overall diameter of the pen, so once I can figure this whole thread cutting thing out, I will increase the diameter of the cap threads and section. Thanks to the suggestion of Fountainpagan, I'm also planning to switch over to a #6 nib. Eventually I'd like to try some embellishments like metal bands and whatnot, as well as make a wooden version. Let me just get the engineering kinks out of this one first ;)

You go fast, John.

Congratularions on this second version.

Again, I don't like the acrylic but the piston looks stunning and the pen's shape is very nice.

Keep on :)

Well done! It looks great. Is the weight of the pen thrown off by the weight of the aluminum mechanism? I wonder if an entirely acrylic mechanism is possible with your design.

Thanks! I don't think the weight of the aluminum amounts to much, or at least it doesn't seem unbalanced in my hand. I would weigh the mechanism for you, except I just got done putting the pen back together after lubing the mechanism and have it all inked up ;)

Ahh, okay. If it doesn't throw the balance off, then might as well stick aluminum for mechanism. It looks fantastic!
