I Created An Excel Edc Log To Document Your Pen/ink Collection And Track Your Usage

Recommended Posts

This Excel spreadsheet is something I created to document my collection and keep track of how often pens were getting used. I wanted to make sure I was making my way through all my EDC pens without ignoring any for extended periods of time. It keeps track of which pens you use most often, the inks you use most often, which pens you use most for each day of the week as well as how long it has been since you have used a pen.

There are instructions on how to use/populate the log on the "Guide" tab. I have pre-populated the log with a limited amount of data, so you can get the general idea what it will look like once you fully populate it with your own collection. You can write over each of the current pen/ink entries with your own data.

The log will track up to 96 pens and 96 inks. If you have more pens/inks than that...well, congratulations.

The spreadsheet can be downloaded by clicking on this link https://www.dropbox.com/s/1vxkkl5mfnozwa9/EDC%20Log.xlsx?dl=1

This spreadsheet is being made available at no charge to users, with no expectation of compensation.

I hope some of you are able to get use out of this log. I've found it helpful for my own collection and wanted to share the resource with others in the FP community. If you should experience any issues with the log, or have any additional questions, just let me know.

ENJOY!

Fantastic, thank you!

I've taken a look, not sure if I can bear to be so organized, and as you say, I will have to talk to someone about my addiction...

Not to be cynical, but it is NEVER a good idea to download an Excel sheet unless you are absolutely sure of the source.

I would agree with you in regard to .xlsb or .xlsm files...but .xls or .xlsx are generally fine.

There is a security setting in Excel that prevents macros from running automatically. It's turned ON by default. It really stops macros from running.

Well, not quite.

Well, not quite.

True... in theory, it should work, but only if that stopping code is written perfectly. Code like that rarely is, so a devious enough hacker could find ways around the block.

I wouldn't sweat it. His username is FigBOOT and he has 2 posts. I would feel perfectly safe downloading this file.

Looks great; I would add a purchase price column in the pens tab, format one more sheet for insurance purposes (printout).

I can understand your skepticism... But just to reply to your concerns, my username has nothing to do with computers, and the file is perfectly safe. No macros, no malicious code, no nothing. I am a data analyst by trade and was just looking to share a tool I created and use on a daily basis.

Thanks so much for creating this! I've been looking for a good organizational method and now I have one!

I just got into fountain pens about 6 months ago and this link doesn't work. Is there any chance to get a new link for your spreadsheet.

Somehow I've never run across this thread before now....

I tend to avoid Microsoft like the plague. I've made up my own lists of what's currently inked up (as well as inventories of pens and inks) in iPages, and spreadsheets using iNumbers. I'm sure that having it all as one giant file might be useful for some people, but I find that too much data in one place just makes my head hurt. So I have the inventory list, sub-divided by brand and model (including stuff like color, nib width, type of fill system, and notes to myself (stuff like when a pen was repaired, and by whom, when -- for the vintage pens -- the approximate date of manufacture, when I got it, and how much I paid (including for stuff like repairs or a new converter). I have a spreadsheet showing price points by column (I got curious about roughly how many pens were in the under $10 range, the $10-20 range, and so on). I have a list of pen acquisitions by year (including which ones were given to me). For inks, there's a list by color, a spreadsheet by color (including whether it's bottles or samples or both); if I've tried a particular ink; and (if so) did I like it enough to want a full bottle. I also have a list of inks by brand, subdivided by bottles, samples, and (on occasion) cartridges).

I don't keep track of prices of bottles or samples, because those are basically "consumables"; I do for the pens, because some of them are moderately expensive, and a lot of them are vintage/collectible. I used to also have charts and lists tracking the pen by color (just because I got curious one time as to just HOW many black pens I have (quite a lot, even though I refuse to joint the Black Pen Society on general principle) -- but when you buy vintage pens, a lot of times you buy what's available, and the preponderance is gonna be black.... But I'd forget to update the pie chart and bar chart, and finally said, "Aww, who cares but me?"

ETA: Malco, a while back some guy started a thread where what he was doing sounded like a similar type of spreadsheet inventory to what Figboot's sounds like, but for peoples' phones (that way you could also have photos of the pens) as well as the information.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I don't know if Figboot is still a regular on FPN. He mentions the excel file in one of his YouTube videos, including a download link that I know worked sometime in the last couple years. If you can't find that PM me and I can send you the file.
