Hello,

I have some black ebonite pens I would like to paint one into à nice red color. I know there's urushi, could

have bought it but I live in a single small student room It wouldn't be healthy to sleep in the same room where the urushi dries.

Thank you for reading :)

You can mix Red alzarine lacquer pigment to a transparent polish. Red alzarine creates nuances from scarlet red to violet, and it will not get yellon with time. You can get it at Sennelier.

Fréres Nordin have an uncolored naturel polish for wood, that doesn't smell. They have it in matte, brilliant and stain finish.

Mix the lacquer with the polish, smash well the pigments. Experiment, because according to the amount of lacquer you will use, the nuances will change. This way you will get to the color you want.

Do not apply the polish with a brush, use the coton (méche) used to do the finishig layers - you can get it at Fréres Nordin, also. Do not overflow the coton, wet it enough, Apply very very fine layers, strech the polish. Let dry 2 or 3 days between layers. Use a 12000 wet micromesh to smooth the lacquer between layers. Apply as many layers as you want.

I hope I could help.

Oh , that's too nice, I never expected that someone from France would reply :D

It will be so easy for me to source these products.

I have a question thoug , I visited Frères Nordin website are you talking about this (VERNIS SP VITRIFICATEUR ) ?

I am hesitating between brillant and satin.

I have already the micromesh 12000, that's a good start :)

Thanks a lot :)

Hi,

no, it is not the vitricateur - it is a too heavy product.

You want a fluid polish, and no smell.

This is the one: http://www.freresnordin.fr/catalog.php?famille=146

To mix well the lacquer powder and the polish you should get a squared/rectalgular plastic recipient and a flex spatula. This way you can smash the lacquer and mix it well with the polish.

Let us see the result, when you finish it.

Very very light, short strokes when using the micromesh.

If you want you can probably finish the all with this one, but you are not obliged, if you coat your pen with enough layers of the other one.

No, actually it is the polish which appears in big - I saw, just now, there is no price. So, either they have forgotten it, either they don't do it any more. Contact them. If they don't do it anymore, you can use this Laverdure one:

Actually, if you want, you can get all you need at Laverdure.

FIRST STEPS .

I think I will do this thing seriously , so I ordered a special basis from Asa pens black unpolished ebonite, nib , clip unit unmounted so it will be more easy to paint. I guess I will have to wait some weeks ( maybe 2 or more to get it ).

I did not buy the pigments, mèches and the polish yet. But I made a stand. So they pen once painted could dry on it.

The Stand

I used things that I found at home. That's why it looks so unprofessional :)

1. A wooden board ( found in the streets of Paris ,( found with some cool old books published 50 years ago )

2. broken fountain pens barrel ( cheap Waterman )

3. 5 cents coins as base for the barrel

4. UHU Patafix, to fix the barrel to the borard.

5. Chinese chopsticks.

Once finished , the fountain pen should look like this

Fountain pen inspired by ban-ei pens and others Namiki.

Voila, that's all for today :)

You are well organised Velvet.

You should buy the material now, and start getting acquainted to it, while you wait for the pen. Get some little pieces of wood to experiment. This way you will be better informed about it, before starting the real lacquer work.

I will be following this with great interest :)

Fountainpagan : I will start next week the tests :)

To all of you : Thank you for your interest :) It will probably last a month, but I promise to share everything the process, the discoveries, tips, time spend and overall cost .

I have made some research before starting this topic and it seems that nobody had triedyet to paint ebonite with other lacquers than urushi. I will experiment here french lacquers.I made some research on the lacquers that Fountainpagan have advised me, and the result on wood are just amazing. :yikes: The lacquer gives a great amount of depth to the wood and the pigment have a great variety of shades.

Wow. This is a fascinating project. Velvet is buying an ASA and ends up with a Namiki Emperor Vermilion? I reckon that's something like a 1,200% return on investment if it works :-)

Seriously, I shall be following this with keen interest. When I started collecting Indian pens, they had great ebonite and dreadful nibs. Now they have great ebonite and good nibs. But no lacquer....

and it looks as if that gap might be remedied!

Too many pens, too little time!

It is because I know the result in wood, I recommended it to you, Velvet ;) . I am happy you like it.

Amk, if he chooses the lacquer I recomended him, the shades will be much more beautiful than the Namiki Emperor Vermilion. Nakaya will probably contact him, how knows?

I kick myself for not having the idea myself, when I know all it has to be done. :lticaptd:

Well done, Velvet. I think you have opened a door to others.

Fountainpagan : Why you don't make one your own ? You have already the knowledge , I'm sure yours would be better than mine and "plus on est de fou , plus on rit" ;)

AMK : :lticaptd:

Indians nibs are not that bad. I am no nibmeister but I've grounded mine into in an very juicy extra-fine nib, a real pleasure to use .With one month use, it have now a very very little flex and gives sometimes a very subtle line variation. :)
