Idyll In Tibaldi Impero Celluloid

Scriptorium Pens

Recommended Posts

I've been fortunate enough to get my hands on some rods of the splendid Tibaldi Impero Celluloid. It took 5 months and filing a PayPal claim before I was actually able to receive the material I'd paid for. When it finally arrived, I couldn't resist taking time the very next day to make a pen for myself. :D I chose a Medium Idyll, clipless, with a black Japanese ebonite section so I wouldn't risk staining this lovely celluloid. I filled it up with Sailor Yama-Dori, and it has quickly become my personal favorite pen.

What a wonderful contrast within the material, the blue seems to glow from within. The simple uncluttered lines and streamlined seamless shape make the pen seem like an object to be contemplated. Beautifully done.

Gorgeous! The Idyll is such a beautiful model. And the Tibaldi celluloid makes it something real special. I hope you enjoy your new work of functional art for years to come!

As you guessed, the Tibaldi Impero is long gone. :(

How might the celluloid become stained during the process? Would a different form of ebonite or an acrylic in the section bleed through to the barrel? Is the issue that the threads at that joint overlap, making the barrel material so thin?

The only reason to use a different material for the section is that celluloid stains easily, so dipping the nib and section into a bottle of ink can stain it quickly. It doesn't get the stain from the process of making the pen, just in dipping it into a bottle of ink.

Renee, thank you for the explanation. I own one pen where overlapping threads enable more show-through from a black section into a barrel made of light translucent Conway Stewart opal material, and it almost looks like a stain.

Unfortunately, there's no way to avoid show-through with transparent and semi-transparent materials.

I figured I should post this to say thank you to both zaddick and Renee for making such a wonderful pen.
