School Supplies 2015 F P Friendly, Of Course

In the northern hemisphere from now until school starts, school supplies will be on sale. Many of us stock up on FP friendly supplies at this time of year.

 

I've already picked up a few composition notebooks at the local WalMart for $0.69.

 

What are you finding?

Back to school downunder usually starts early January after the post Christmas sales and it is a great time to catch some bargains.

Target had some composition-type graph paper notebooks from Brasil for .50--look on the bottom shelf. Most of their paper was from Vietnam, as was most of the paper in the grocery store. I find Vietnamese paper to be hit or miss. I did find one type of composition book from Columbia--the paper didn't feel too bad, so I bought one to try out. Walmart is currently scoring a zero on paper--it's all very porous from either India or china so far.

I was in Staples last Friday and picked up some composition books. They have plastic covers and indicate that they were made in Egypt. Haven't tried them out yet. They were inexpensive enough to buy a dozen. If they work for my pens, then fabulous. I have plenty to share with the kids around here. I already buy crayons, pens, and pencils to distribute when an opportunity presents itself. Love the sales for this very reason It is much better than giving out candy or gum, imo.

Office Depot has composition book graph paper, made in Vietnam, for $2.00. I bought four and took them home to test them out. They worked great, so I went back and bought four more. Virtually no show through--just a bit of ghosting, and no problem at all using both sides of the page. I tested it out with the following combos:

M1000 EF with Pelican 4001 Brilliant Black

M800 EF with Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue

M400 F with R&K Alt-Goldgrun

MB 149 F with Diamine Denim

I was pretty impressed with these notebooks. Even though each of the pens I used are EF-F, they are wet writers. The PR DCSSB and R&K are really wet inks. No problem with any of them. I don't have the notebook with me now, but if interested they have soft gray paper covers (not stiff like the typical composition books).

Noticed area Walmarts have started stocking compostion books (at 50-cents each). Though I have a good supply put away, I had to rummage through a few and found there was a mix of USA made (mainly) and Brazil made (quite a few).

 

I really don't like that composition book covers are getting less and less firm to where now there is little firmness left at all. And the nylon/plastic covers have never been tempting to me.

Check out Staples

Last year I got their 'SINGLE subject, wire bound, made in BRAZIL' notebooks for 17 cents each. I bought 30 of them.

It is not real high quality paper, but perfectly adequate for my journal writing. If you have an EF/XF nib, you would feel the paper, but F or wider and you should be just fine.

Stopped by my local Staples tonight. They have the single-subject, wire-bound, Brazilian notebooks on sale for 25 cents. I regret that I forgot to check how long the sale lasts, but you could probably call your local store and ask.

Here in Germany the school supplies are now on sale, too. I found a really nice and cheap student fountain pen for my ink experimants at woolworth's.

So for the next round of sale shopping I hope to find some notebooks... ;-)

Has anyone found inexpensive lined (narrow or even college ruled preferred) notebook paper that is punched with three holes?

I teach, so I have been at Office Depot, Staples, & Target looking for deals. I've noticed that I have yet to see lined, loose-leaf notebook paper on sale yet. The lowest price I have seen was at Staples for .75. Last year I believe they dropped the price as low as .15. I am going to continue watching Staples since they seem to have better deals and allow you to pick up larger quantities.

 

My local Costco (Central CA) had Moleskine journals (6 pack "Cahier Journals" 120 pgs., 70 gsm, 7 1/2 x 9 3/4". The pack came with sticker labels, the back cover has the pocket, & they included alphabet stickers.) I know it doesn't handle all ink, but I have found Platinum Preppy Extra Fine pens do not bleed through and allow both sides to be used. I'm sure most extra fine nibs would do the same. I found them on an end cap near the office supplies.

These were $19.99, a pretty decent deal if you use notebooks.

Edit: I just saw an Office Depot ad- lined notebook paper is .01, limit 3, with a $5 purchase. If you need Office Depot brand copy paper it looks like it's $3, not sure if it is a full ream or 300 sheets, but if you need other items one cent for lined paper isn't too bad.

Now that school has started in many U.S. states, we can start watching for even better deals of good FP supplies in the clearance areas.

I found out Walmart carries Black n' Red notebooks. 24lb Optik paper from a German company called Oxford (not the same Oxford us in the states know, I don't think). Notebook looks great and the paper is smooth but has just the right amount of feedback that makes it feel like you are interacting with the paper. I got one in A5 size for my computer science lecture (also have one in letter for my pen testing and personal scribbles), I would have gotten one for each of my classes but I needed graph paper for my ECE lectures so I went Clairefontaine instead.

YES!

 

Wal-Mart, look for Norcom, made in Mexico single subject wirebound notebooks. They have the perforated, "clean tear out" sheets and are three hole punched. Only 17 cents each! I bought 4 of them. Downside is they are only 70 sheets. But they come in college and wide ruled, so be careful what you snag...

 

DO NOT get the same variant that says made in USA. There is a distinct difference in the paper quality.

 

I was about to start a thread to bring these very notebooks to light (and to see if there were any other deals to be had). Surprised there haven't been more of these threads, LOL...
