Help With A Purchase

Hello came across a ad that was on ebay for 1997 Yardoled.Since this will be my first would just like some help on if this a good purchase and if it is worth the price? Any help will be greatly appreciated...Thanks in advance

I could be totally mistaken, but the price for a silver pen with a steel nib as far as I can see, seems a bit steep. But then, I have no knowledge of modern Yard-O-Leds to be very honest.

With only a cursory glance among the "usual suspects" of dealers of dealers that I know carry YOL I did not find a GRAND (i.e the BIGGEST model) listed except Amazon. There was only 1 listed & it showed $885. which I suspect is full retail. The pen on Ebay is 18 years old & should perhaps be a lesser offering price than the suggested $600.00 for "buy it now." They do offer the option of "make an offer" so you could always use that option to tender a lesser bid. Some users feel that used pens should always be 50% less than retail BUT certainly retail is usually reflective of a 20% discount from a retailer. So you could inquire from perhaps Farhney's what their price would be if they were able to order a "Grand" model to know what retail price is @ the moment. I purchased my YOL (different model) from them & it was a considerable discount from listed price. You might also check some of the European dealers, Couronne du Comte shows the same pen @ $796. list price as a comparison.

I understand your concern. I certainly compared prices a lot before settling on my purchase of a YOL Grand because it represented a lot of money to me. Another option would be to compare the size of the "grand" & regular model if the larger size isn't important to you. Whatever you decide you would love a YOL pen. They are beautifully made & feel great in your hand (IF you like a "heavy or large pen.) Good luck!

The nib will be 18carat gold, not steel. The rest of the pen will be Sterling silver and all of the repoussé and chasing work done by hand. A Viceroy Grand Victorian is a fair size pen; here is my Viceroy Grand Victorian next to an ST Dupont Orpheo/Olympio XL.

It weighs in at almost 68Grams so also pretty heavy. Here you can see it next to a few other Sterling pens, from the top, the Montegrappa Privilege Deco and their 80th. Anniversary, the YoL then Waterman Gentleman and Sheaffer Legacy family.

The last picture shows the relative sizes of the Yard-o-Led Sterling silver pens, on the left the standard size, then the Corinthian, the Viceroy Grand and my favorite, the Pocket Victorian.

That seems like a lot of money for that pen. The Pocket Clip appears to be sprung.

They come up quite frequently at Auctions.... I've seen a couple this year, and they've both gone for around £200 - 250 plus commission (15% - 20%) ... But that is here in the UK. ...
