When you get t his on your hands, whilst cleaning your pens, do you walk around singing "She wore Blue Velvet...."?

When I get Wancher Matcha Green on my hands, I go around yelling "My fingers are diseased and going to fall off!!"

Do you also utter Zombie like sounds?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

My wife accuses me of doing such when I make nocturnal visits to the amenities...

Does anyone know why Parker doesn't re-launch the Penman inks? The demand seems to be more than enough...

Based on my limited experience of PPS and my longtime experience of Mocha, whilst the colours were gorgeous they were troublesome so and sos in the pens.

Compared to 'standard' inks of the time (Parker Quink, Waterman, Sheaffer Skrip) they needed more maintenance, and gave more trouble to users used to those inks.

OK. But there are many inks today that require some TLC of the pen, so it should work nowdays.

The interest of a few rabid foaming-at-the-mouth dedicated pen and ink fans is not sufficient to motivate the giant corporation Newell Rubbermaid, which owns Parker Pen. The dyes originally used may no longer be in production, nor may other ingredients, or there could be regulations prohibiting their production due to toxicity or other factors. It would be quite some effort to recreate the Penman inks, even if they still had the original formula, and there is no guarantee of that.

In the old days they had a monopoly on super saturated inks, and now, you expect them to compete?

One thing this thread should demonstrate is the many wonderful, well-behaved, saturated inks that are on the market today, some which somewhat resemble the original Penman Sapphire, and many that are wonderful in their own right.

This obsession with PPS reminds me of Charlie Brown's infatuation with the red-headed girl next door. But within the constraints of the cartoon, being imaginary, he could see and some day talk to her. Whereas now people in the real world discuss the near imaginary, unobtanium ink. You might as well chase the fountain of youth, or the Sevens Cities of Cibola.

You are exactly right, white_lotus. My thoughts, exactly. The nature of long-lost, historical inks is that they are part of history. And yes, we do have very fine inks currently. I have seen the almost fanatically praised PPS in use on letters I have received, and in my very humble opinion, it is no more splendorous, sublime, or heavenly than other deep, rich blues that we have currently.

But I guess that is the nature of obsession: knowing that the object of adoration is unavailable, and still acting as if it weren't.

Very well said!

I think that Parker should release the formulae for the Penman inks if they do not intend on making them any more.

Totally agree... my humble opinion is that after experiencing hundreds of inks, I know for a fact that paper, nib, feed, ink wetness, humidity.. they ALL play a part on how an ink looks on paper. Add to that the fact that we all perceived colors differently, and makes me wonder why people chase the "illusion" of PPS. ;)

I am sure they are better PPS-clones out there than the original PPS... :D (Currently I have DeA Steel Blue in one of my pens... :puddle: :puddle: :puddle: :puddle: -worthy)

Funny...that's what I thought too. Really liked the PPS, but found the Akkerman "Shocking Blue" fascinating (more sheen than PPS) and Diamine "Blue Velvet" absolutely gorgeous.

I'm not much of a blue-black writer, but there are now two on my roster of "go to" options. :)

Why are there fourteen samples of dark plum ink on my desk? Because I still haven't found the right shade.

Is that a problem...??? : : : sigh : : :

Update: Great. Finally found one I love (Lamy Dark Lilac) but I can't get more. Ah, life in my inky world....

Hmm, a clone of PPS that is a better copy of PPS than PPS is of itself.

This takes some thought...

However, if we take PPS as a standard, against which certain other inks can be measured, then that is a different matter.

Some will dry quicker, or have more sheen, or shade more, or simply have more joie de vivre than the original.

Others will dry more slowly, or have no sheen or shading, or be simply boring.

For example, when I first tried the sample of Bung Box Hatsukoi (aka Sapphire or First Love) I didn't think it was a close copy of PPS because it was more exaggerated than PPS in many aspects - colour, shading, sheen, presence, etc.

However, I later decided that as an ink, it was abso-bl**dy-lutely superb.

The account is probably in the hands of an old style bean counter, who thinks of the risk of investing in the production of a niche product, instead of thinking that it would be very easy nowadays to pre sell the product and produce it only once adequate volume is ensured... Much smaller inventory costs and risk.

I never went ape for the inks themselves, but I love the bottles. I regret I tossed most of them when they emptied, but I still have about 1/4 of a bottle of Mocha left, and when that's used up, I will fill the bottle with some cheap stuff.

I understand! And Blackstone BRB is a lot of fun! Daintree Green reminds me of CdA Amazon but with a much nicer price tag.
